A towel is perfect for fighting leaks. Or at least mop up the mess.

This is admitting Apple is now making towels!

It also likely hurts existing product lines - how many of us are holding out on the current Mac line for the new models?

A lot of us, but all of us rumor-reading, product-cycle-watching geeks are a small drop in Apple's bucket. Most of the millions of consumers who buy Apple products don't pay attention and don't care; they buy what they like when they need/want it and don't worry about unreleased products.

I think that Apple's 'brick' thing has a lot to do with them keeping info from leaking. I guess we can't expect more shots of upcoming MacBook stuff, since Apple will be handling the MacBook manufacturing process.

seems like a good evolution of good business/customer relations. the leaks just get everyone more excited about their products anyway, and no one really is 100% sure if a leaked product will become reality

Apple would be smart to release info to influential members of the web media (Kevin Rose). The buzz generated is high, Apple can always distance itself in case plans change, and its almost free to do.

Now spend that $20b on Adobe or some game studio and start widening the user base instead of selling Mac users Mac phones and Mac music players. Or buy Netflix and merge it with the Apple TV.

This really disheartens me, I love the personality Apple got from being secretive.

I have actually said before that I thought Apple was being a bit more lax about the leaks. Could a reason be that they don't want to shell out the money to the lawyers anymore?

It's kind of sad, if Apple, experts at this, can't keep secrets anymore then no high profile company can. The days of being blown away by "one more thing" are probably over.

Have we ever seen leaked photos of a redesign of the their tower?

Where do you get your information for the not-yet-available Dells, Gateways, HP's, etc...and how far in advance do they release their timelines for new product releases?

you are trying to compare apples to oranges here.

how many different PC manufacturers are there? TONS. if one doesnt have a machine that fits you, you go to the next, etc. and so on.

there is only 1 company you can get a mac from, and that is apple.

there is a lack of information and rumors from a PC point of view because they integrate different hardware AS SOON as it comes out. PC's have the latest intel processors the second they are released. with apple, we have to wait a few months in order for them to make a whole new machine around that processor. also, if a new nvidia chip or processor does come out, you can install it yourself... with a mac, you cant.

and finally, PC's just do not have the hardcore fan base that apple has, which just adds to the rumorville.

I hope they do stop the secrecy. I've posted on here before that I think it takes away from their products. They are so busy being secretive that the beta testing is crap and the product comes out buggy as hell. Keep the NDA's but get a good trustworthy team of testers and release a kick-butt product.

that would be engadget. though noone really cares what innovations dell has put into the studio hybrid line and the company they keep in the comments section isn't always classy.

i've always found it kind of exciting to see sites teeter on C&D notices - but i can see how it's been pointless to go after the rumor sites. they really do need to find their internal leaks though. whoever has been seeding kevin rose information has been more accurate each release.

I am one who loves rumors of upcoming products, to see what may be coming out. It was the reason I waited over 2 years to get my first mac. I just got sick of waiting for the next thing...

right now I am waiting on the tablet..... Keep the rumors coming, so I know what to look forward to and if I should wait to upgrade the next time.

Apple doesn't need to counter rumors any more. There are so many FAKE rumors that no one believes anything.

Remember when the "fat boy" iPod was leaked? I'd say a good 80% of the people out there didn't believe it. Remember the latest Nano? Same thing. It was "an obvious fake". Then again, there have been countless more fakes out there.

Exactly! With the new iPhone as well.

People, they're not throwing any towels, they're just changing tactics. A mail from the legal department just confirms a picture is real. With so many photoshopped pictures going around, nobody takes leaks serious anymore.

Rumor sites are to blame, by the way. They almost always pick those pictures up, thereby (a) encouraging fakers and (b) drowning the real ones.

Maybe not. Perhaps the information about "brick" referring to the production is Apple propaganda and "brick" really encompasses what functions the new MB can be used for.

Well..... technically, no one showed pictures of the actual iPhone 3G or iPod Nano itself... rather case designs and CADs...

Can Apple demand the removal of a picture that isn't of their actual product?

Don't Believe It

I'm getting tired of Apple updating it's policies on a daily basis and then recalling them.

This is nothing more than a Knee Jerk reaction from all of the bad press they have been getting lately.

When Steve gets better he will pull all the new Open and Friendly Apple back in the closet and put things back to Paranoia Ville where he belongs.

i wouldn't be surprised if apple was so lax on the nano to make the new macbook seam like it's way outa left field and look like noone saw it comeing

This is a good point. That week definitely stole some of the spotlight from the MacBook rumors.

I think they should start selling apple computers with microsoft vista installed or as an option to pre-install before shipment. That should add a bump to their market share. =)

It is fun to speculate and banter back and forth and take guesses but when total product info is pre-released then yes it does take the wind out of their sales and it sets individuals (who only have themselves to blame) for failure because they still want to be surprised or wowed even though they know everything that is coming. Its like finding an engagement ring in your boyfriends jacket pocket then trying to be wowed or surprised when he asks the question.

Do PC users get all twitterpated in anticipation of some new piece of **** from Dell or Toshiba?

I wondered when they would throw in the towel hiding products.

Hmmm... I don't think apple is throwing the towel at hiding products, the article just says that it will stop fighting leaks, as in that they will not force legal action against sites and be demanding leak sources from them.

I do, however, think that they will try even harder to keep everything under wraps, just like the new macbooks that are hopefully gonna be announced soon...
