If there is to be new notebook unveilings next week (10/14), shouldn't press invitations be on their way by now?

Yes, and how do we know they aren't?

They aren't necessarily going to be leaked instantly, if ever, by their recepiants.

Do PC users get all twitterpated in anticipation of some new piece of **** from Dell or Toshiba?

The Dell mini-note drummed up lots of press and enthusiasm. Michael Dell was seen with one at "All Things D", which was at least one to two months before it was released to the public. HP's mini-note also garnered lots of attention, although that was let out of the bag closer to its release than the Dell laptop was.

Last night (before I'd read this) I was thinking about how Apple might release certain "far-out" rumours, like the glass trackpad or tablet, to see what kind of response they get from, arguably, their most loyal users.

As much as I enjoy the Keynote and the wow-factor I personally think they could announce updates at least a month or so in advance and keep the brand-spanking new stuff closely guarded for that "one more thing" moment to get a good balance.

The argument that we don't know about Dell or HP's new products is wrong as they release new products as soon as the new technology is out (and we all know the roadmaps for a lot of these technologies) - but AFAIK they're not as hung up on the whole Keynote thing which is what some people are claiming is a large reason for Apple's secrecy.

Also, one of my friends has been asking me for months about buying a new iPhone - I've told him each time to look at MR and form his own opinion but he just doesn't (I don't know why) but I suspect he's like most other new Apple customers - they know the info is out there but they don't care enough to find it themselves - they just want the Apple product they see in the movies/TV or all the "cool kids" using.

If so, where's the info on the Macbooks?

My own opinion is that the case manufacturers for the iPods revealed too much last press release (Let's Rock), and Apple is keeping things under wraps more than ever. Steve did say they would be way more careful. I'm speculating that's why we haven't heard much as of late.

OK, so where are the new Macbook pics?

And if there's no more cease and desist orders, how will we tell the genuine leaks from the fakes?

yeah , give us something on the macbooks. maybe a case leak or something!!!! please please. i got my $$ money ready either way, i just want to know what its gonna look like.

I have my money ready as well. Been waiting for the next refresh.

That being said, I think that if there is any truth to the 9to5mac Apple-controlled manufacturing process rumour, then the rumour community can expect fewer leaks for two reasons:
1. Direct Apple employees will be less likely to risk their jobs and legal action than third party assemblers in China.
2. Less time from design to final product, and more automated processes, means that new designs will pass through fewer hands, and encounter fewer camera phones.
