It doesn't hurt sales that behemoth Amazon, is now selling iPad's. I snagged a 2018 budget iPad for $229. In fact throughout the holiday's, Amazon had trouble keeping them in stock.

I am sure the deep discounts over the holidays helped. I know that I and a friend both bought the entry level iPad because of that. $80 off was a great incentive at multiple retailers.

iPads are great device indeed but unfortunately, I could get a 4K laptop with 15inch touch screen monitor i7 8th gen 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD with expandable ports etc...for almost $1300-$1400 with the keyboard, pen, carrying case as well....those who love iOS better get one of these iPads....

I am sure they sold a ton of iPads during the holidays as their discounts were huge on the non-pro model (dropping as low as $229 for 32gb).
According to the Apple Hater's Playbook, discounts are a clear sign that they're too expensive and nobody wants them (so therefore Apple is DooMeD).

Just like, if it's hard to get the new iPhone at release, that's "Apple is purposefully holding back to create artificial scarcity to make it look like people want this terrible phone!" (so therefore Apple is DooMeD).

Conversely, if it's easy to get the new iPhone at release, that's "nobody wants this terrible phone!" (so therefore Apple is DooMeD).

As to the current (non-pro) iPad, it's a great machine at $329 (it's a solid improvement over my iPad Air, for like half the price). I have relatives that bought a pair for my nieces (currently used only for long trips and sick days) - I have no doubt they'll be using those for the next 5+ years.

This. I think every single retail shop around the world should be reporting directly to Apple whenever they sell an iPad, because that's very possible and how we should be going about this stuff.

Shipped doesn't mean sales!

Um.... Seriously? This is on an Apple forum I am surprised to see this comment. Apple has one of the best if the not best supply chain and Just in Time Inventory management on the planet. Tim Cook loathe piling stocks in channels. And Apple knew when every new devices gets activated for warranty.

For every other manufacturer their shipment number means little to nothing. As they might likely get written off later in the cycle. For Apple Shipment literally means sales.
[doublepost=1548962388][/doublepost]I really want Apple to do better in the Tablet area. In terms of quality ( apart from the recent bending ) the iPad have no serious competitions.

Majority of the sales must have been when the major retailers were selling the iPad 9.7 for low as $220 during the holiday season.

They could double the sales if they could make it a bit cheaper and significantly increase their revenue on both device sales and service sales. Moronic strategy. Tim Crook should step down.
There is a 329 priced iPad for those who don’t want to pay the big pro prices.

A new iPad is $329. There's likely a new one coming very soon, for probably that price. They're cheaper than ever now.

What else do you want? To get an iPad for free? Do you want Tim Cook to give you $100, instead of you paying him?

Jesus.

I paid $250 each for two iPads for Christmas for my kids. I was satisfied with the price. I still feel the regular iPads are priced where they should be. (Even at the $329 price) The Pros are higher than they should be though.

You are being too harsh on tablets great capabilities in this post PC world.

They are also good for Youtube and Netflix :D

Like the iPad, quality product, only as an add on product. It cannot stand on its own. Everyday, literally, I find a webpage form glitch, an incomplete app, or some other incompatibility that I need to get my MacBook to accomplish what the iPad failed to do.

This users forum, the post edits like selecting text fails often. I will post something, oops a mistake or better wording needed. Try on iPad’s (we have two) fail. Open Mac, no problem. The Mac I cannot remember ever having an issue.

Do I like the iPad, as noted. Best of the tablets on the market, however a bit pricy. Not a standalone product for my needs.

Yes, I am sure you have more data about Apple customers, the trends in any country markets, sales performance per price, market research, simulations and experience than Cook and the other people running Apple have.

I wish the iPad Pro could do real Pro work. I bought a Chromebook tablet this year and I can install any Linux app on it. I can code, develop, script, whatever I want. It also has a full browser and can install Android apps. It's not as good of a tablet experience as an iPad though. Apple has the tools to make the iPad Pro what it needs to be, but they won't do it.

There’s 1 thing the iPad can’t do and that’s app development.

It's honestly not a very impressive number considering the ipad Pro was a total redesign. Only 10% higher volume of units y/y with a finally worthwhile refresh. They should have sold more considering that, and with a roughly 20% increase in ipad pro pricing, their increased selling point of only 4% is very telling that most of the units sold were NOT the new ones. Read between the lines for the real truth.

When i watched the keynote i thought to myself (before they announced the price) that i was gonna get another ipad pro this time since it was a more noteworthy upgrade. And then they put the price up there.... NOPE PASS. ALRIGHTY THEN, BYE BYE. Won't cave to their lunacy.

They are going to increase the price for the iPad. :)

They may do, they may not. As long as they don't force you to buy it, you will be just fine. You as a customer decide with your wallet if it is worth it or not.
Tired of these snarky comments about the prices. The prices may have doubled compared to the plasticy products of decades ago but are much higher quality and last for much longer.

ORRRRRR

Discounts directly play into price elasticity model of supply/demand thats learned in basic economics 101, that when you lower the price point on an item, demand tends to go up.

this isn't anything new. This isn't people being "haters". this is simple, common knowledge.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_elasticity_of_demand

Now yes, a lot of people define their own narratives based on speculative guesswork. But this comment right above shows a signficant lack of understanding of basic economic principles.

If Apple can only sell (numbers are fictional for example purposes) 100 iPhones at $999 earning 99,999 in revenues. But then drop the price to $899, and manage to sell 120. They would then bring in 107,880. With the plus side that they sold 20 more units, increasing it's market share, AND increasing potential service and accessories revenues with it (Since there are now 20 more people in the ecosystem).

the trade off, while you get more revenues, you're selling 20 more devices for cheaper. So your average margins do decrease (Yet you stay profitable).

In the case of high prices lowering demand, you potentially shrink market share (especially happens in a mature market where no significant NEW sales happen, but resale or people changing suppliers), but you maintain profit margins.

So the fact that on discount, Apple's iPhones moved faster and more volume than prior to the discount is not and SHOULD NOT be considered a surprise to anyone, nor should pointing that out be telling anyone they're "haters".

Also good for: taking handwritten notes, drawing sketches/diagrams, reading/annotating PDFs, anserwing email/messages, editing documents, signing documents, etc.. Typical stuff people need to be productive while mobile.

The iPad is a pretty capable on-the-go device in a sleek 1lb form factor that costs as little as $229 on sale. Sounds like a good business decision for professionals that do their heavy lifting at a workstation back at the office.....which is a lot of people. They don’t need or want to carry around a laptop to every office meeting and client appointment.

When I am in a meeting and someone is clacking away on their laptop, I think: there is a person not paying a damn bit of attention to substance.....just a scribe.

I also used to take handwritten notes in my iPad a few years ago (at the time when the iPad didn't even have first party pen support). I stopped doing that because I stopped needing it not because there was something worng, no it is probably better. It is a typical iPad task as it works very well in a very specific use.
In regular meetings I prefer to use a laptop because these notes need to turn themselves into a report and a prefer to start right away on a document that will become the said report.
Clacking away on their laptop is the same as those people that seem to be writing all volumes of War and Peace at each meeting. Some people like extensive notes, others prefer lighter.
But my comment was more of a joke than anything. I like the iPad, in fact I love it, my frustration with it comes from trying to shoe horn its use into all or the majority or my computational needs and running into its limitations.

I agree. I think the frustration with the iPad and iOS in general primarily comes about when trying to get it to do things that it just isn’t great at..... “shoe horn” is a good term.

For me personally, my usage is evolving more to large smartphone plus desktop computer. The big phone is kind of my PDA. I take notes on paper, but generally don’t write a lot down....try to listen more.....which I need to work on. The Desktop is pretty hard to beat as the ultimate productivity setup for most applications.

Meh, I really thought about upgrading from my 10.5" iPad Pro, but I'm going to wait it out until there is a full version of photoshop on iOS/iPad Pro. Currently use Astropad to link through laptop.. But would be great to ditch the laptop and just have the iPad when traveling around.

I did purchase a Wacom Cintiq 22HD instead of the new iPad pro to have a better and larger workspace on photo and graphic works while at desk. My 10.5" is really just collecting dust at home. Serves it's purpose though while traveling.

At this point if nothing happens with being able to use full photoshop version on iPad without laptop will most likely just get the Wacom Mobile Studio Pro 13. Might begin a full transition over to Windows computer/OS wise at that point. But I would rather not sinse I'm so deep into the Apple Ecosystem already.
