Apple's 24-hour flagship 5th Avenue retail store in Manhattan will be shutting down on Thursday for the night. Apple's retail page reflects the temporary shutdown:
Please note we will be temporarily closed Thursday, May 29 at 3:00 p.m. and will reopen Friday, May 30 at 9:00 a.m. During this time, please visit one of our other two Manhattan locations.
While you might think that this would be a routine occurrence for inventory or some other innocent purpose. we've been told that Apple's 5th Avenue store has only been entirely closed twice in its history: the iPhone launch and the Leopard launch.

Instead, there are rumors that there will be a commercial shoot happening at that time. The exact subject of the commercial is unknown, but reportedly previous filming has occurred at the store without closing down entirely.

Or more likely it's one of those: "Hi I'm Omar, and I'm at the Apple Store at the Grove. I'm going to show you the cool new features in Panther"

Except it will be some other guy talking about the iPhone 3G and asking "customers" what they like about it. It will go on to be a video demoed by Steve Jobs at the presentation on June 9th and then available to download from Apple thereafter.

Because it's cheaper to shoot in your own store than recreate a store in a studio?

yes that's correct but why 5th ave? that's the ONLY store in NYC that's open 24/7. would make more sense if they shot it at either SoHo or 9th Ave, since they actually close over night.

weird.

Not necessarily true. It depends on how much money they'll lose through lost sales compared to the cost of hiring a studio. :p

If it is a commercial shoot, it isn't necessarily and Apple commercial shoot. Could be anyone with the right about of money...

Would cost a whole lot to rent I imagine... Revenue loss, employee salary loss, electrical, etc.

Maybe its for the new product X they are going to launch at WWDC, and don't want a leak.

remember, before macworld we saw the Mac Pro, could there be a Pre-WWDC product?

I think it would cost them less in lost sales for only a few hours of daylight from 3PM, most sales are done mostly around mid-day anyway(me thinks, not knows), lol

iPhone 3G commercial

Since they're closing at 3:00, it sounds like they want daylight.

Can't very well have the public around for a commercial on an unreleased product, and as one poster said, they want daylight. 5th Avenue probably offers the best in what they want for a backdrop.

That is a good point, but maybe Thursday night is their slowest night.

I know what it is, they're closing the store because they know that everybody's going to a surprise birthday party for me. :p

Ok, probably not.

ok has anyone though of it could be the 3G iPhone or as one poster said the "X" product(Or very very nice Cinema displays). I mean Apple could unveil a product on a friday just to mix it up a bit.
