I personally really hate Best Buy. Their associates are just terrible, not even mention the Geek Squad. They're just as careless and clueless as it gets. Besides, Best Buy is not exactly cheaper anyway. In fact, they are more expensive then most other electronics stores.
Now I saw this news that Best Buy will be selling iPhone 3G. OMG...this is ridiculous. I would never want to get my Apple products at Best Buy. Do you guys really want to see your precious new iPhone being careless handled by some dumb associates who would probably tell you to call Apple if you have any concern?

wait. Because "you" hate BB apple should not sell at bestbuy and make more money. What crap. It's a phone not a new born baby, if they touch it it won't get sick or die. How petulant can you be.

Now, this is interesting. Just exactly what did they do to disable the HDD that could be fixed by "hitting one of the function keys at launch"? I've been working on PCs for awhile, and this mystifies me.

You can disable the HDD in the Bios, or remove it from the boot list.

This thread is stupid by the way. Best Buy is the largest and fastest growing electronics store in the US (quite possibly elsewhere as well, but I'm not certain), and having a product on sale there can only be a good thing. I've met terrible employees at Apple stores (shocking I know) and great ones at Best Buy. Hell, I even met a knowledgeable person at a CompUSA once. While BB might not consistently have lower prices than Frys or Amazon, I find their prices to typically be decent and their sales good. The only thing I think they really price gouge on are Blu-Rays, but they're kept in the good company of pretty much every other Brick-and-Mortar store in existence.

Thanks. After I thought about it, I figured the poster must've been talking about disabling the HDD in the BIOS, but that's not what he made it sound like, you gotta admit. And FWIW, I agree with everything you said in your response, except when it comes to cables. I would never buy a cable of any sort that I can think of from BB.

yeah best buy's service isn't really that great. I buy all my small tech stuff like memory cards, wires, etc. from there since its the most convientient but when it comes to apple products (aside from the 3G, got that at AT&T) ill go with the Apple store. NEVER (unless i have to) will i but a mac from best buy because of there service.

Ok...I'm not sure if you're like perfectionist or not, but I am. So I actually refused to let them open my iPhone 3G box in store (I bought it in an Apple store). I was able to activate my phone at home myself. Just to let you know you can do so if you don't want some Best Buy idiot to manly handle your phone.

For a perfectionist, your grammar is pretty bad. I'm not normally the kind of person who points this out, but it sort of hurts your credibility.

Sure 95% of the folks who work at Best Buy are half-stoned 20-somethings who know almost nothing about electronics(outside of Xbox Live), but that won't stop me from buying stuff there. You'd be crazy to ask for their ADVICE, but they certainly can hand you the box you are pointing to and carry it to the cash register. I'm always sure to thoroughly research my purchases, so I just need them to ring me up.

I live in a major metro area, and even for me it is much easier to get to a Best Buy than it is to get to an Apple store (10 min vs 35 min drive). If I am getting a Mac or some specialized accessory, I'll probably drive out to the Apple store. But for an iPod, iPhone, Leopard - stuff that is a simple purchase - I am just as happy to save the drive. Before Best Buy started carrying Apple products last year it was a 70 minute round trip for even the most mundane purchase for my Mac. As market share goes up more places will carry stuff, and it will make my life easier. What's the problem? How bad can they possibly botch an iPhone?

I do think the in store activation was a mistake, but more because it caused long line and delays than any sort of concern about phone handling.

I am not exactly sure what, I will try to find the link later. It wasn't just one of the function keys, but one of the screens that comes up when you hit a function screen or something like that, with the black screen with the grey font.

If you want to try to find it yourself, I believe that it was WCVB-5 (the ABC affiliate for Boston). I believe that it was done during the winter of 2007 and they went to stores in Rhode Island because of some legal reason that wouldn't allow them to use hidden cameras on TV that were recorded in MA, but I am not exactly sure. I'll look for the link when I have time tonight.

Found the video and story for the report, here is the link to the main article about the computer repairs at Best Buy (also included Circuit City and CompUSA).

I work at Best Buy, and from what I've seen alot of people enjoy coming into the store and getting help with there technology needs.

The Performance Service Plan or PSP is actually in my opinion a pretty good deal. World-wide coverage, 25/7 support, any issue at all unless you caused the damage, excluding viruses and spyware, everything is pretty much covered. You

I'm buying my MacBook in the next week or two and after alot of debating I've pretty much nailed it down that buying the laptop from Best Buy and purchasing there PSP is better for me then buying AppleCare from Apple.

My nearest Apple Store is almost 2-3 hours away, while I can reach Best Buy in less than 10 minutes. Having worked at Best Buy, I know that they will pretty much take care of it unless I cause the damage, so that gives you a peice of mind.

It is cheaper to buy AppleCare if you have a student discount, but whatever, its a great option to AppleCare.

How about if you don't want to shop at Best Buy you don't.

They are not only going to sell their products there.

Why all the hate for Best Buy? "Exclusivity" factor has been out the door since day 1 of the AT&T-Apple partnership. People who buy iPhones just so they can brag about it must have forgotten that 3Gs selling out in the first couple of weeks means that the "I have an iPhone and you don't" factor was gone too.

Like other people who have noted, it helps Apple (the business) flourish and those that live far away from an AT&T or Apple Store (consumers) get the product they really want. It's a win-win situation for everyone. The only "losers" are the ones crying that other people can get the iPhone just as easily without having to do with those terrible wait lines that management by both AT&T and Apple came up with.

not a bad move by apple. its good to take advantage of BB's existing distribution channel.

Good call on the cables. Monoprice.com FTW

I'm pretty shocked they are actually doing this.

But hey, it's better than Walmart or Circuit City. Hopefully they limit it to just Best Buy, but i doubt it now. I was hoping the iPhone wouldn't turn into the RAZR, but since of the AT&T exclusiveness, that helps out a lot.

Grammar problem. Ohh...EXCUSE ME for not typing FORMALLY on a "message board"!!

I have a solution, why don't you not go to Best Buy?

Apple products sell themselves and that's the bottom line for me. I'm sure an ape can sell an iPhone or an MBA. They've been selling Apple Products at BB for quite awhile, from what I've witnessed, and they allow the education discount the same as Apple Stores. Additionally, they have an excellent return policy and extended warranties on their Apple Products.

Their prices are just as competitive as the next; in fact each Thankstaking (Thanksgiving for Native Americans) I've made the trek at 4:30 a.m. (bring a heavy jacket in the SF Bay Area) to the nearest BB and picked-up the latest Sony Bravia 40" LCD and last year I saved $900, so I'm pretty happy...IMHO:p

...why is the OP pissed? If you don't like it, don't buy from them. That simple. This is great news to many people who live near a best buy but not an apple or AT&T store.

My concern with BB is that Apple is going to sell that many more phones, pushing their designers, coders and suppliers increasingly harder to produce enough phones to keep up with the increased demand.

The 3G hasn't exactly been a model specimen of quality; hardware, software, or activation wise. Doubling or tripling production at this point doesn't seem like such a great idea IMO. And then what can we expect for the next gen phone? 5 million sold on launch day? Bubbles under plastic screens? Cases that melt in the sun?

There is a finite number of units that can be made in a given time period without them literally falling apart. Apple doesn't seem to care about that minor detail as they push forward. Their thirst for world smart phone market domination seems a bit shortsighted and ill planned.

Best Buy is shady. They advertise that they will match their web price in store, but they'll try and trick you first. I saw a DVD player advertised on their website for $59, and when I went instore it was $69. I asked an associate to match the website price, so he fired up a web browser and directed me to the DVD player's product page, where it was listed at $69. I knew that wasn't the right price since I looked at the page 10 minutes ago. Turns out the page he showed me was from their intranet, which looks exactly like their internet web page, except for a different price. When I called him on it he just looked at me and said he forgot they're not the same. SURE.

I had a Best Buy sales rep do the exact same thing to me with a Toshiba DVD player. I was not very happy. Now I print out the web page and bring it in with me.

I wonder if you'll be able to return defective iPhones for a replacement at Best Buy or whether they will ask you to return it to Apple?

...I wonder if you'll be able to return defective iPhones for a replacement at Best Buy or whether they will ask you to return it to Apple?
You will have to return them to Apple, Apple is the only company that can service the iPhone, AT&T cannot either, they will just send you back to Apple.

I'd imagine Best Buy will let you return the iPhones only if you buy there Performance Service Plans or their Product Replacement Plans. The PRP only applies to products under $200. If there's a defect, they replace it on the spot. While the PSP is for repairing and maintaining performance of the product. :p

If Best Buy doesn't offer a PSP/PRP then Apple will be your only choice.
