Isn't the app store going to be for Snow Leopard users only? If so, how will users of earlier versions of OS X be able to get the apps?

The Apps listed there where never actually on any Server hosted by Apple, they only gave you links the Site where you could download them all along when you would search it via google or so.

Yep people still use widgets, and I expect apple will have a section on the Mac App Store. I don't really go searching for new widgets anymore, I used to but found it hard to find good ones that were useful.

Anyway widgets I use regally:

  • • Default Weather widget
    • BBC Weather widget, as a second opinion
    • Default Unit Converter
    • Word Counter: http://www.supermagnus.com/mac/wordcounterwidget/index.html
    • Lorem Ipsum Generator: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/reference/loremipsumwidget.html
    • Default Calculator (although I often use spotlight nowadays for quick calculations) Can't see to copy and paste from the calculator anymore, possible since Snow Leopard so it is not use useful anymore. That really sums up the problems with Dashboard!
    • Egg Timer: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/food/eggtimer.html
    • Default Clock, I use this to display other timezones if anyone is away, I also I have one set to Cupertino for apple events :D
I also have some arcade games like Tetris and Asteroids which are good and a bunch of other widgets that I sometimes use, but not often.

I think the Dashboard dock needs upgrading and Exposé hot corners should be disabled in this Dashboard.

Since i got a iOS device i never used Dashboard again *shrug*

c'mon what about the people that don't have the newest os??? They can't download apps from apple anymore??

The list of apps on that download page wasn't that great anyway. I could never find anything useful on it. Just use MacUpdate or some other site.

Apple never hosted those apps, they were just links. You can do the same thing through MacUpdate or other such sites.

astonished to see so many negatives. I always download programs directly from their own sites, not feeling any inconvenience.

Maybe I'm cynical but what this is saying is something along the lines of:

"If you are a Mac developer and want exposure through an official Apple channel you will sell through the Mac App Store and give us a 30% cut rather providing free listing on the previous Mac Download List."

I thought you could have have free app in the Mac app store? Are there currently any pay apps on Apple's downloads site?

It's quite ironic how the company that harped on about the 1984 scenario, has become that exact same big brother entity.

I think that is correct. They are not going to spend advertising dollars and web space on your app unless they are getting a cut.

They are not going to prevent you from selling apps through your own website, however. To be honest, I never used the Mac downloads pages unless it came up in a google search for something I was already looking for. Even then, I ended up going to the developer's website in the end.

It will be interesting to see how the App store works. I don't think OS X apps are as foolproof as iOS apps, so either they will severely limit the apps that make the cut, or people will be having many issues. I personally will probably not use the App store because I keep software a long time and don't want to worry about DRM when I move them to a new computer.

Yes because it is so hard to search for software and download it on its own that I need everything fed to me in the app store.

And there could never ever be anything better. And everyone is just exactly like you.

Apples already closed, this takes it one step further. Steve controls / censors everything.

No their not, it's brilliant from a money making standpoint. In addition they've got their followers so well programmed they will defend no matter what the price is in both cash & loss of freedom. After all it removes their need to think for themselves. A huge relief. No need to think. No fear. Let Uncle Steve do the thinking for you.

Please name the OS X application I can not install due to Steve's"control".

Second point so completely wrong it's funny.

It's funny. I guess I'm a newb since I've never actually clicked on the "Mac OS X Software" link under the Apple Menu. I'm going to click it after replying to this to see what I'm going to miss out on in the next release. lol :D

I don't mind this as i don't think I've ever used it. No point Apple keeping two similar catalogues.

Am I reading this right? One step closer to the cloud, all the vendors are prepping us for the change and it seems like Jobs is again leading the pack. This is fine for high speed but rural America will be left in a cloud of dust, myself included because we have no high speed and can't get it. I feel less and less support for my MAC. As it is now I have to download in the middle of the night for unlimited access via satellite off hours. I really wish Apple would prove they are really a different kind of company and not follow the pack to the cloud.

Like it or not. the cloud is coming. I went to a few marketing classes lately (especially focusing on internet marketing). Desktops are obsolete unless you need mass storage and raw power, but even high-end laptops are pretty good for most things. Laptops are becoming passe. The focus will be true mobile computing with smart phones and tablets. More and More companies realize that the days of having big buildings and someone tied to a desk are over. It is actually getting cheaper for them to have good remote employees and letting them work from the couch, pool, or where ever. Some studies have even found that employees are much happier and tend to be more productive (due to the impulse to work at any hour) if not tied to an office. Of course there are those that abuse this privilege.

Besides if you own a smart phone or ipad - do you really fire up your laptop or desktop anymore (unless you need the power/ram for a hog of an app like video editing). Not me, I surf the internet on my iphone, use the apps on my iphone or ipad from the couch or where ever. The apps I have are top notch, like conventional software apps. And most apps do not rely on the internet. Except for initial download and updating.

In the future I am thinking of not even having a laptop anymore. Just an imac for video editing, managing my ios apps, and mass storage (photos, videos, etc); then my ipad for everything else. not having to lug a laptop sure makes travel easier.

And as for your satellite - unless your company limits you; I heard it is blazingly fast for downloads. it is uploading that is slower than dialup. The only draw back is foul weather. I know in a thunderstorm, I used to lose my satellite TV.

Edit - oh and the imac for using garage band to make my pod casts. I have yet to find a good iOS app for that.

I've owned my macbook since 2008. I never clicked on it either. all it does is take you to the download page of Apple's website - something I rarely looked at. I search for most my apps via google or go into the apple store, if I am looking for something specific. the only time I hit the download page, is if the app I was looking for, via google, took me there.

Reminds me a little of the whole airline/travel agent relationship. For years, Apple fostered the download site as an aggregator, to show people there WERE actually apps for the Mac. They needed the developers to be there. Now that they are big time, they no longer need that site.

I didn't even know they had that site...

I have a feeling the Mac App Store is going to be difficult to avoid if you run Snow Leopard on your Mac. I have mixed feelings about it personally: On the one hand, it provides great exposure to any developer who uses it. On the other, I don't know Objective-C so I cannot contribute to it.

I'm tempted to downgrade my Mac to 10.5.8 just to avoid the store

I think this will be the common response from the targeted group of people that will exclusively use the app store. Those of us that want apps that won't fit the app store mold will just continue going to the sites like MacUpdate or CNet to get downloads. I hardly ever used the Apple Download page as it is. Same thing for widgets. I prefer dashboardwidgets.com. When it comes to things like software, in many ways it's better to not have the list monitored by Apple, otherwise you are stuck with the same restrictions that the app stores have. Let a third party do it better than Apple ever did.

Put your tinfoil hats on.

Hit the nail on the head. This thread (or any App Store thread) has more conspiracy theory comments than a JFK biography. The key to a good conspiracy post is even if it is proved to be massively flawed you back it up with even more outlandish claims.

For example...

Tinfoil - "Apple just take 30% of your cut for doing nothing and you have to be happy about it."

Rebuttal - "But for distribution a 30% cut is actually quite reasonable and a LOT better than deals for boxed product when it is usually 70% not 30% you get charged, I know this as I work in the software industry"

Tinfoil - "Nobody would ever sell software for more than a 5% cut I know this as I thought about selling a shareware app once. The main point is (at some arbitrary point in the future) Apple will force you to sell only in the Apple store and only allow you to run applications that have been sold through the App Store. Any applications not in the store will never be bought by anyone so from Jan 6th people will think that Mac's don't have any business software like Adobe or Office and that Mac's only have 99c games"

And so the cycle continues...

...good for a laugh while eating lunch though :)

This is what I have right now, I use my iMac still fairly often, but more commonly my iPhone. Unfortunately, my MacBooks rarely get touched anymore.

About the OS X Software, I never found anything too useful there either, and I found the Downloads section a bit slow and cluttered too, and the majority of links that I tried to use were dead.
Will they be bringing popular iOS apps + games to the OS X Platform?

The download listing and the app store are the same thing really. It is just the presentation format that differs.

And both are bloated with software that makes it difficult to get good search results.

Sheesh. Didn't you get the memo? You are supposed to be pretending that the Apple Downloads page was the primary way that everyone got their Mac software. That way you can justify the outrage and claims of Big Brother. How are we supposed to have a productive discussion without vague references to 1984? And Nazis. And Facism.

Freedom.

Open.
