I know some people can be anal, but really, thinking that apple's signature sms tones are blatant advertising, takes that to a whole new level.

Agreed. When it comes to Apple, there is nothing too ridiculous to complain about.

It's really pathetic that phones I had in early 2000 could have customized ringtones yet the iPhone can't without a jailbreak. Apple really needs to step it's game up when it comes to things like this. Default ringtones is so 1995.

Actually, creating and adding custom ringtones on an iPhone is easy to do, even without jailbreaking. I use GarageBand to make mine, but there are several other programs that makes them as well.
What the iPhone STILL can't do, however, is make custom SMS tones and THAT is definitely very frustrating.

I agree that Apple should allow you to use a custom sound for messages. The new ones added in 4.2 are pretty awful...why are they all so long??

They added them to try to make people happy at the same time make them so long that everyone would still use tritone because we all know that's the only good SMS tone.

It is advertising. *iPhone Text Message Sound* "Oh look, they've got iPhone's, I want one too!"

Any more than the Windows startup chime is advertising? Or any other crap cell phone that you can't change any of the tones on? Hearing a sound in public isn't advertising, nor is having a recognizable sound for your product. If you're weak enough that a beep can make you salivate for a new phone, that's your problem.

I know I know, its seems insignificant in comparison to other iPhone issues. And yes, it will seem to many that I'm nit-picking. But if it is such a small issue, why hasn't it been changed? Its been on the request list since before the 3G world release if I'm not mistaken.

Its just the arrogance displayed by Apple in not letting us change it and thinking that we won't notice or care that they're forcing us to play their sonic logo that really irks me.

So Apple needs to explain to you how to change your text noise or leave it on silent? They're not "forcing" you to do anything, you bought the phone knowing this and yet you still act like they slipped something by you....

If you really want to throw off a room full of iPhone-istas take your laptop to Starbucks and burn a CD in iTunes. ;)

Fair enough, they are not forcing me. I can turn them off completely and let it buzz. But if I want sound, it has to be Apple's sound.

It actually is a form of advertising called sonic branding. The start-up noise for computers is a perfect example of sonic branding (although Apples original chime was invented to make crashes seem nicer). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_branding
But you can change the start-up tone or turn it off on windows, and back before OSX you used to be able to change the start-up tone on Apple computers.

And sure the noise doesn't make me want a phone, but every time you hear the classic text tone, you will think of Apple and thats all they want. Also thanks to the new SMS tones ONLY available to iPhone 4, you can know who has the latest model.

Blatant would be the SMS tone saying "Apple" or playing a sound from the commercials...I think you meant "subtle" advertisement

Your right, sorry, to me it seems blatantly obvious, but really the advertising or sonic branding achieved on the iPhone is very subtle and clever.

It's absolutely advertising. They know what they are doing.

Just as the "exclusive" (read: AWFUL) new SMS tones are restricted to the iPhone 4 for NO real reason at all. Guess this was a failed attempt at creating ooh and ahh when an exclusive iPhone4 tone goes off...instead, nobody uses the damn things because they are minutes long and sound like they are from the 1930's.

Think about it. Every time you hear the tone, guess what...you instantly know it's an iPhone. Brilliant.

Why should they let you? It's they're choice as the manufacturer to net let you. And if it kills you that much you shouldn't have gotten an iPhone...

Yes and like most of everything apple you have little choice to change anything. This is true whether we're talking about OSX's themes or the iPhone. You buy the iPhone you have to accept apple's closed architecture.

If you don't like or don't want to accept apple's closed architecture, then get a different phone.

Try using the "edit" button when in the main lists of all your texts to get rid of whole conversations. And then try it again when in a certain conversation to delete exact messages.

Swipe the text messages and the delete button appears. Pressing that delete the WHOLE conversation with that person.

Thanks man, I hadn't thought of that

But you didn't mention whether you think that Apple's signature text message tones are advertising or not. Or whether you believe Apple has some other reason to prohibit our ability to create our own.

The SMS tones on iPhone are ridiculous. even my Samsung dumbphone 5 years ago had better tones...

Please don't go off topic. Also check out dropbox.com ;)

Sorry, wasn't trying to hijack the thread, just commenting that the issue wasn't at the top of my list of "gotta haves". BTW, I have dropbox, but it doesn't do that, just gives you a way around it in a roundabout way. I need the files (multiple ones at that) actually attached to the email, not a links to them.

Yeah, I knew you could do that, but I want to be able to delete ALL conversations with a single delete, not each conversation individually.

K, lets end the "deleting text messages" and "saving attachments" part of the thread here and get back on to whether you believe the signature tones are advertising or not and whether your just fed up with being unable to change them.

Something else that really annoys me with the very small amount of tone choice, I'm always confusing my phone with about 3 other people in my office that have identical text message tones.

I'm fine with the default SMS tones, but I can see your point in "advertising". It's like a trademark sound that almost everyone recognizes.

I do think it would be nice for us to customize our own tones, however, I doubt that I would change my own. In fact, I usually cannot stand other peoples ringtones that are songs, any song. I suppose I am old fashioned in that sense, as I use the "Old Phone" for my ringtone. When my phone rings, I want it to sound like a telephone, not a rock concert. I have one exception and that is my girlfriend which I use the "Trill" ringtone so I know it's her calling.

I dont get why or how many times you'd want to do this but It can't take that long to do it conversation by conversation. And In my experience, when I used to mass delete all my texts on other phones it usually took a minute or two anyway...

i don't get what you want from a text tone. like, i would be irked if we couldn't do ringtones, but text tones i don't really care about. like it should be short and to the point. and apple achieves that. most of the time, people don't even know what it was that rang.

off topic: sherwood forest is now my text tone. its that good.

Please stop the hikjack guys, if you want to talk about mass deleting of text messages PM each other.
