i don't get what you want from a text tone. like, i would be irked if we couldn't do ringtones, but text tones i don't really care about. like it should be short and to the point.

I'm a sound designer, so I have heaps of original and awesome little sounds to chuck on my iPhone to make it sound cool. I designed my ringtone and I have a bunch of text message tones I designed for old Nokias. I even did up some cool 80's game tones which make rad text message tones.

... apple achieves that. most of the time, people don't even know what it was that rang.

In my social circles and with work, I can pretty safely say if Tri-tone sounded off when I got a text message, 90% of people would know exactly what phone was in my pocket.

wow, I had no idea you couldn't change the text alert sound. So no metal gear solid ! sound if I get an iphone?

Not sure whats worse, that apple don't let you, or that I actually find it a big deal.

Cheers presto, glad to see someone agrees.

Although if you go off the survey almost twice as many people just don't give a stuff and are happy to be spoon fed what Apple gives them and I reckon the others just don't know what advertising/branding is.

Done that once a year for three years. As have countless others I'd presume.

Of course (as have I), but I think you'll agree that sending feedback directly to Apple is more effective than compiling an external petition.

I'm honestly not sure I do agree. What proof is there that any of what you post on the feedback site is even looked at?
(I don't want to lead the thread off into a distant conversation about the Apple feedback site, its just a comment, you know what I mean)

And assuming that our feedback is noted, then I'm pretty sure that Apple know that the majority of iPhone users want custom SMS tones. I mentioned previously its been on the wish list of forums like this since before the iPhone 3G release.

Also the feedback site gives you no satisfaction! Not even an email to confirm that you sent feedback. You can't see if your suggestion or complaint is alone, or among of millions of others. At least with a survey or group or even thread like this, its obvious to see you're not alone and easy to refer Apple to proof.
