whats the point of Cydias blobs? i thought if you didnt have them save on your computer with tiny umbrella than you can restore to that iOS anyways or did i misunderstand that

You need to have blobs to restore to older firmware.
You can have them on cydia or saved on your computer but you do need them.

ok i get that, but for instance ive only ever had 4.1 on my iphone and ive restored to 4.1 a few times no issues

cydia has 4.1 and up to 4.3.3 on the top of my cydia homepage, does that mean i can restore to 4.2.1 for instance?

You have the blob for 4.1 saved, as indicated on Cydia. Also, you can reinstall as long as Apple is signing for the blob. It's likely you somehow edited your host file.
As long as you use either TU or edit your host file, then you can install any ios where you have the blob.

correct, Tiny Umbrella tells my i have 4.1 saved which makes sense its the only iOS i have ever had, my confusion is why does cydia list 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.2b3, 4.3, 4.3.3

am i wrong to assume the only old firmware i can restore to is 4.1 becasue thats all i actually saved with tiny umbrella?

You can restore to any firmware you have a blob for. It makes no difference what software is on your phone. If Cydia lists those blobs, it has them, and you can restore to them.

ok ive restored just last week staying on 4.1 so i kind of get how to restore to an older firmware

i downloaded 4.1 firmware, started TinyUmbrella, stat TSS Server, then in itunes Hold Shift click restore, found the 4.1 firmware and boom

now since i dont have the blobs for any other firmware saved locally is it the exact same process to lets say try 4.2.1 or do i something different if the blobs are not saved locally

If your hosts file redirects to cydia you dont need to use TU as long as cydia has them on file.
All you do is shift-restore and you're done.

Welcome bro.
Good luck with it.

kept getting a 1013 error, i think i got some bad instructions on changing the host file, ended up updating right to 4.3.3 and re jailbroke

now when i went back to tinyumbrella to save my 4.3.3 blobs its saved them and filled in everything between 4.1 and 4.3.3 so if i dont like 4.3.3 i think downgrading will be easier now that they are saved locally

Hey Applejuiced or anyone else. Could you please tell me what these comments mean? What are blobs and should I also be editing my host file? iPhone host file or Mac host file? What does TU do? Are blobs like "firmware cookies"?

I also edited my HOSTS file to make sure it was not pointing at Cydias servers.

use tiny umbrella for accurate blobs.
Cydia takes forever to update what blobs it has...

Bet you didnt ask to pull them from cydias servers in the advanced options of tiny umbrella.

Saving locally makes no difference. Error is from failure to sign the baseband and is normal. Just open tinyumbrella select the device and click Exit Recovery. Easy.

Blobs are the signatures apple sends out to authorize iTunes to proceed with the restore. Apple only issues them while the firmware is the current version. You can tell programs like cydia to save then for you for future use. Tinyumbrella can also be used to save them to your hard drive or save them from cydias servers. Editing the hosts file directs iTunes to cydias servers insted of apples where it recieves the saves sig. Tu can be used with locally saved sigs to emulate the authorization server as well. Two ways of doing the same thing.

So why do people use this method? Incase you need to downgrade your firmware? Can't you just edit anyone's blob file and insert your phone's unique ID?

You will want to edit your host file if you want to install an older firmware.
Video on how to edit host file on a Mac:
This is the line you want to add to the host file:
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
There is a tutorial on how to downgrade firmware here.

Thank you. I don't need to downgrade but thanks for the post. Might need it some day.

Since your phone is refurbished, the old owner had gotten the blob or JB the phone. Apple doesn't sign old iOSs.

Lol did you even read my post?

1) Not refurbished

2) No blobs were saved when I got it

3) I ensured the blob was not used when I just restored

Read next time.

rather rude OP hope you don't need help down the road.. Sorry we didn't realize you are a expert. Thanks for the wonderful news.

Had the responder took the time to read he would have known about the 3 facts. It was a rude OP, people just has to start paying attention and if it requires brusqueness then so be it.

I did read the OP's post and ignored the nonsense that the phone wasn't refurbished. S/he had gotten a replacement from the apple store, so it would've been refurbished.
It's no different than ignoring some idiot who blathers about how the planet is only 5000 years old, but then talks about the latest dinosaur find. I'm going to stick to the factual information.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-gb) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Interestingly, I've had three referbs in as many weeks (3GS). First two had problems and had to be returned (microphone issue and row of red pixels). All three had 4.1 blobs saved on cydia and no others besides 4.3.3. Could be a coincidence but it us suspicious. If my original phone were referbed the next owner would have all blobs since 3.1.3.

Just had to check out this thread and back up the OP.

To be clear, for some users, Apple is still signing iOS 4.1. Apple. Not Cydia.

I can bring my iPhone 3GS to any computer, anywhere, and restore to iOS 4.1. Apple is still signing it for me, no need to use Cydia or anything else.

I got my iPhone 3GS back when 3.x was new. So there was no way someone had it before me and backed up a future iOS blob with it.

I even rolled back from iOS 5.0 b1 straight to iOS 4.1 through iTunes without having to edit my hosts file. That contradicts both Apple's claim of users being unable to downgrade from 5.0, and the many claims by a lot of people that say Apple doesn't sign old iOS installs.
