I've never understood why someone would have more than four tabs open at once.

Since owning the iPad 1, I've never come across a situation where I NEEDED to have four or more tabs open. That's what bookmarks are for. I've had situations where I've needed three, but not four.

I am a Power user and prefer to have lots of tabs open, IMO apple should have put 768mb of ram, it would have cost probs no more than 5 dollars per unit for that little extra ram and could have saved crashes in apps and safari for power users of ipad. Just my 2 cents or pence rather is im from UK!

I still get page reloads after 4 tabs but it depends on how much free ram is available.

I reboot Ipad I can load like 8 without reloads.

After using a few apps it reloads after one or two sometimes.

The point of this thread is not another xoom vs ipad thread. Its just my experience.

I have Ipad and Xoom. I like them both

Judging from your last started posts, there is little that Apple could ever do to make you happy!

Yet you keep buying, so . . . . .:p

I'll buy what I want to

I like Apple products but hate poor design decisions and poor manufacturing quality.

It's a free country last I checked. I can complain if l like.

I'm not going to defend my posts because there is no need. Get a life.

I don't see the need to bash others for just posting messages.

Some people are just haters. Haters can go *****

Is it really a RAM issue or just ****** Safari programming?

I mean the other browsers on the iPad manage fine? No?

I think we are getting so obsessed with specs these days and forgetting things. I mean I ran Windows XP on 64MB ram once with a pentium II or some crap and it was fine

Yes more Ram is needed. It part of progress and evolution of the technology. Comparing it to XP is like saying I used a cassette player to load programs and didn't need a hard drive. It's a poor argument to say 20 years ago or 10 years ago, in computer technology 1 year is a long time.

Why do specs matter? I have read over and over how IPhone beats Android based on such things as specs, retina display for instance.

I'm starting to believe specs only matter when it's in Apple's favor, when it's not it's ignored.

I looked up the specs of IPad 2, half of them are missing meaningful description, why?

If the new Xoom works as well as IPad 2 then what?
It would be interesting to see what would happen.

Besides the spec issue the one thing Apple has done right is Marketing hype
And the iPad functions well also.

But to ignore progress and facts because it's cool or we are told by some belief it doesn't matter because performance is more important, is turning our back on progress.

Anyway have fun

Then why did you even bring it up? You could have made your RAM gripe without ever mentioning the other product. Psychology 101 says you mentioned it because that's exactly what you were going for.

1 gig of RAM should have been in the iPad 2. Bringing up the fact that the competition offers that shouldn't be this upsetting to you.

So clearly If you don't need to use something there is no chance any of the other millions of users might have a need?

The point of the thread is the iPads lack of ram which Apple once again strings along consumer by adding " just enough" to keep em coming back for more vs doing the right thing and actually putting in enough ram to get the job done right.

Couldn't agree more. I bought the first iPad as well as the iPad 2, and the RAM was the achilles heel both times.

I'm sure they'll throw 1 gig of RAM in the next iPad, but because of the dramatic resolution increase, cached web pages will take up even more memory so the increase still won't be enough. :(

They also skimped on the cameras, speakers and expansion.

The XOOM skipped on graphics power.

Everyone knows what each tablet is and isn't.... If you knew it had 512mb ram and that it would be an issue for you, why'd you buy it?

No one knows its an issue until its in hand. So, its not dont buy it....its return it.

Concur. Wish Apple had put 1GB in there, but I'm sure they were doing everything they could to keep costs down.

Wait I thought the ipad 2 had a cost of $130....seems to me there plenty of room to not skimp.

Want to save further....cut the enormouse advertising machine a bit.

Apple has a long and illustrious history of skimping on ram. Every mac I had always had too little ram. I either had to go the BTO route to upgrade it, or upgrade the ram myself.

So seeing that apple has skimped on ram for the iPad is of no surprise.

To be fair however, I've not really noticed any issues with my iPad that you could attribute to lack of ram.

Have you ever bought an Apple product before? When have they ever been ahead of technology, ever? There is ALWAYS a more powerful, 'better', product available.

Mac Pro? PC whipes its ass.
MacBook Pro? PC whips its ass.
MacBook Air? Samsung just released a better-specced laptop, that's also thinner.
iPod? You have MP3s with OLED, more storage, etc.
iPad? Playbook? Xoom?

What does Apple make that is the complete best in regards of specifications and numbers? Apple doesn't play the spec game because the majority of consumers don't have the slightest idea of what the benefits of 512mb vs 1gb of RAM is.

Fact is Apple has never played the number game for specifications, so if you want 1GB of RAM in your tablet, don't get an iPad. It's literally that simple.

If specs mattered, why is the iPad 2 STILL selling better than any tablet? The iPad 2 will continue to sell more as well, even when the PlayBook and TouchPad are released.

Glad you had a nice little rant but you missed the entire point of my reply. Congrats.

the bulk of this is opinion so I quoted the part I agree with.

Ipad or Ipad2 sells so well due to the hype that surrounds Apple products.

SJ has done such a great job with explaining away any problems its almost pathetic how people can agree with him at times

Ipad2
Cannot upgrade ram
Cannot add storage memory

But the heart of the os performance to date has been superior.

I won't address PC/ Mac since its off topic.

It's a bit of annoyance when you realize they're holding back on 1 gig for v3...shows you how much influence the marketing department is having on product specs.

Wouldn't the marketing department want the device to have better specs? It would make their jobs easier.

Point is, putting in lesser specs would indicate that the accounting department has more influence than the marketing department ... unless the marketing guys just want the challenge of selling tons of iPads with lesser specs than the competition.

If there was a gig in there, there would be threads with people complaining that they get checkerboarding after opening up 20 tabs. It never ends.

Since owning the iPad 1, I've never come across a situation where I NEEDED to have four or more tabs open. That's what bookmarks are for. I've had situations where I've needed three, but not four.

Therefore nobody should be able to quickly and conveniently use more than the number of tabs that you do? I know... let's redefine everyone's computing experience according to what you think is appropriate.

Then why did you even bring it up? You could have made your RAM gripe without ever mentioning the other product. Psychology 101 says you mentioned it because that's exactly what you were going for.

FWIW, I usually have 5-6 tabs going at any given time, mainly so I can save something I want to remember and look at on my desktop later. So far, I've only seen the iPad 2 reload a tab once... and since this is a RAM conversation and not just a browsing conversation, I'll happily mention that every single thing I do on my iPad has been faster and snappier than it was just a week ago on my iPad 1. Could Apple have put more RAM into the iPad 2, sure... but so far... its a vast improvement from where I was sitting a week ago.

I'm sorry, are users not supposed to discuss their experiences with other products here? Is there a rule that a user who owns both an iPad and a Xoom should not be allowed to mention the Xoom by name? Why are you personalizing this so much? The OP is merely talking about his experience, and he makes a valid point. The memory issue is important because it affects users' experiences, so why can't we talk about it?

Sounds like you define yourself by your iPad way more than the OP defines himself by anything that he owns. You need to take a long, hard look in the mirror my friend. After using the iPad 2 for 10 minutes I decided against spending so much money on a toy. The screen suffers from horrible light bleed issues and iOS is not optimized for the tablet form factor. There is so much wasted space. Who wants to see row after row of apps? The reason for that design is because Apple makes a ton of money pushing apps, so the greater focus on apps the more money goes to Apple.

The reason I am intrigued by the Xoom, forthcoming Galaxy Tabs and HP's offering is that all of these make much better use of the screen real estate. You can actually customize your experience with these products and use them to get work done rather than just play. With Honeycomb as well as WebOS I can customize my home screen to provide me with important information at a glance. For instance, I can see my upcoming calendar reminders, snippets of messages and emails, and a live social network feed. All on my home screen without needing to launch into individual apps to get at that same information. Oh but wait, maybe you need more RAM to do those wonderful things...

am I the only one seeing the irony here? OP said some people are just haters and told such haters can go *****. but looking at the first sentence that OP posted, it seemed like he has plenty of hate to go around.

OP, are you telling yourself to go *****?

Agreed, Sir! I misspoke.

With blazing fast wifi access, page reloads aren't a problem. I suggest you upgrade your internet service from DSL.

My xoom has 1gb. So if specs don't matter how come I don't get reloads on the xoom lol.

Increased RAM improves the user browsing experience.

Thats funny I have three Xooms infront of me (friends own them and I am testing a game I'm developing on Android) and every...single...one...gets page reloads. I just tried it after seeing this thread.

So yea....you must have a magical Xoom.

Some people can't get fast internet, me included, the fastest available speed where I live is 3 Mbps..

Yes, don't tell me they couldn't have done that with the v1, or put in cameras as well.

It's a bit of annoyance when you realize they're holding back on 1 gig for v3...shows you how much influence the marketing department is having on product specs.

I don't think it is just marketing, but also cost factor and battery life. If the iPad 2 had 1G of ram, would that affect battery performance? Probably. So at some point you have to decide on those tradeoffs. If you just make the specs on the iPad incredible but the battery lasts an hour and it weighs 3 time as much, is that a good trade? Probably not.

Guys, remember: The hardware is only as strong as the software! ;)

Even though Xoom has 512MB more RAM than iPad 2, it still lags in the menus and interface - and pinch to zoom and scrolling is still very very buggy/slow/unresponsive.

iPad is always super crisp (at least what I've experienced with the iPad 1 - guess 2 will be even better :)) and super responsive.

Some people can't get fast internet, me included, the fastest available speed where I live is 3 Mbps..

Then you should move. Problem solved.

Or, you know, just take it as it is, or return it for something you like better like the Xoom. Then you can go to the Xoom forums and complain about it there to people who care.

Thanks for the info on the Atomic browser, looks really nice, about to download it.

One thing though. - if Atomic can put out such a full featured browser, why can't Mozilla put out Firefox? Didn't they say Apple rejected them for "duplicating core functionality" or something?
