Less than expected demand doesn't surprise me. I bought an Android phone because as much as I like the iPhone, the iPhone 5 just didn't do it for me. And I know I'm not alone in switching to Android when given the decision of that or an iPhone 5...

You do wonder when the biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone isn't so big after all...

I just hope the next-gen iPhone gets here soon, and that it's a great product!

The higher the top, the longer the drop. There are cracks in the Apple armor. They will become more like Samsung and the companies they mock as they go for the low end market. The elite, exclusive brand is being rapidly watered down.

I'm not so sure on that.

Apple owns the entire stack. Hardware (including PC form factor, mobile and media devices), software, cloud services - including media store.

None of their competitors are as strong in all three areas.

This means that apple can integrate all of the above in ways their competitors can only dream of.

Sure, it's not a given, but to be in such a strong position right now, the other guys are going to have to work hard to beat them - or apple are going to have to fumble in such a colossal way.

Also, remains to be seen what their recent massive datacenter builds are to be used for. You can't tell me it is all iTunes and iCloud backups :D

I would seriously suggest they have un-named products in the pipeline that are nothing to do with iPhone or iPad.

Can thank a stale design and os for this.

For me, the OS was not the issue. It was the hardware design: specifically the ease at which the black version can scratch and show wear. I don't put my iPhones in cases (they already come in a case). And amongst the most careful (caseless) users I know, we've all been disappointed at how easily the black version scratches to reveal the bright, raw aluminum below. It's been enough for me to pass on this iteration - and I've had every iteration since the '07 launch. I hope with the next version, Apple either A) figures out a better something (coating?) to help address this issue or B) moves to a different material (carbon fiber?).

Android & Samsung have become a formidable force breathing down Apples neck. While Apple was busy attacking them in court, Samsung's vast resources allowed them to avoid the distraction & continue to innovate.

Apples in for a royal surprise as a plethora of new & advanced Samsung phones are unleashed in Q2. Even if only some of the rumors are true, iOS & the tiny iPhone 5 I own, are about to be relegated to old tech in a matter of a few months.

I hate the feeling that Apple let this happen where once they showed the way. Yet it proves that no matter how good they were, resting on their laurels for the sake of profit taking can bite them in the ass. With the stock dipping below $500 from a high of over $700 as recently as September, sends a serious message.

Times have changed & Samsung led the charge.

Are you for real? I responded to this: "it's a PHONE."

I didn't respond to "it's a smart phone," "it's a phone that is smart" or any other combination of smart plus phone. Just "it's a PHONE" (caps and all). Do You get it now?

Yeah, I get it. You zeroed in on a single word in my post, while failing to grasp its context as well as the context of the post I was responding to. Well done.

It is interesting - really - how Samsung is now a name people associate with quality. I never have - my Samsung microwave never told time right - my Samsung HDTV was a piece of garbage. The name, Samsung, associates in my mind to the same level as Emerson, Sanyo, and their ilk.

Just thinking out loud, but we'll just have to see what Apple comes up with. With Steve Jobs is gone - what can they possibly invent to take on the world by storm? A new iPod? A new iPhone? A new iPad? What else could there possibly be?

In my opinion, what Apple needs to do is make wearable things, like computerized glasses cool - because that's the only way it'll be cool is if Apple says it is.

Apple don't need to make a new product, they just have to listen to what customers want. Its clear alot of us want a larger screen on the next iPhone, its also clear alot of us want more customization options in ios. If Apple release a 4.7 inch iPhone with a revised ios that gives users more options it will be extremely popular. More then anything Apple need to provide more options, keep the 4" iphone and release a larger 4.7" iphone for people that prefer a larger screen, not everyone wants a 4" device, just like we don;t all want a 4.7" device. The fragmentation of Android is a two edged sword, it does make things hard when it comes to standardizing the OS but it also allows for a massive range to choose from.

So what specific "new and advanced" technologies is Samsung about to unleash that will relegate iPhone 5 to "old tech"? If it's another oversized plastic monstrosity with 5.8" screen and nasty TouchWiz UI - I say you go ahead and have fun with that.

Samsung is basically a hardware company, which does not know how to develop quality software or develop an ecosystem. Samsung doesn't threaten iPhone/iOS any more than HP threatens MacBooks or iMacs. Those of us with taste will stick with iPhones.

So no one yet has been able to validate this WSJ report or the conclusions they derived from it?

Me too, more the hardware design. I really don't like the bezel running along the screen -- it's kind of sharp, ouch!

And I don't know, this new iPhone 5 just seems uncomfortable in the hand -- maybe it's the aspect ratio?

I don't think that simply building an iPhone with larger screen will work.
The whole app-infrastructure is pretty much tied to the fixed-resolution framework in iOS and changing this to an resolution independent framework will not be workable overnight.

I think Apple is bitten in the back by their lack of innovation in OSX. They decided to no longer pursue resolution independence in OSX and now it is throwing them back, because there is no workable framework available to make all your apps resolution independent. Doubling the pixel count only works once or twice...

In my opinion, they shouldn't change the resolution. Instead, make the pixels a little bigger--how about a 4.7 screen at the same resolution?

The icons will be a little bigger, but icons on the iPad are already bigger than any iPhone. So just scale the same resolution/dpi to a bigger screen (hardware)--no software changes.

Then keep the current iPhone 5 size and add a larger screen option.

Ignorance is a bliss they say.

FWIW Samsung made the stylus cool again. There are several great things you can do on the Note series (and thanx to a FW upgrade on the SIII). And putting a short memo drawing on a phone is innovative.

And don't get me started on their camera software (which runs circles around the iPhone).

I think ,as someone else said before me,that this maybe good because competition is good for users.
Iphone 5 resemble too much a super doped Iphone 4,ok its slimmer, longer, with better hardware ..but..not enough to make me change my Ip4.
Actually i'm looking for next Ipad mini with retina hopefully and to buy a Galaxy S4 ( when it will be more than a rumour) or a Note 2..because a lot of Google Services are leaving Apple as effect of its own decision..and i need it because i use it a lot,Google Maps,Gmail,YouTube...etc etc and this while i know that Google Apps are on AppStore but frankly after having Google announced to dismiss Active Sync Services...this worries me a little.
I mean with Ipadmini and a Note2 i can have the best of both worlds, this while i still love my Imac,my MacBookPro like a mad.
To be honest the only thing stopping me from do it its the possibile lack of Ecosystem between an Android and my Macs..don't wanna discover to have just Windows programs to connect with it.I want an easy coexistence.

Right. What is really missing on Ipad for example is a Digital PEN-Stylus..
iPEN2 is about to come and to ..hopefully..fill this gap..but its lack makes strange, its boring and weird that Apple doesn't release yet an Active Capacitive STYLUS as the one showed in Patently Apple..Apple needs to innovate a little bit faster..because its competitors are..maybe not with good results..but are actually trying to.
Then other reasons may stands behind those "low" numbers,...maybe are just lies, maybe its because of the Crisis..but i understand this should affect all..we'll see.

Apple could simply allow the iPad and more so the iPad mini, to use a phone funktion. It is just a software tweak and voila, biggest phone on the market without any costs what so ever. And all the bathroom tile fetish guys can stick it to the Samsung "phones"
I have a free pay as you go phone for gsm phonecalls (few and far in between) with two weeks battery and so small, it fits in the coin pocket of your jeans. Everything else I do with the iPad mini. Four phonelines (three landlines, one mobile) running over the iPad mini to a BT in ear device, never had a problem and my entire office is with me. A small advantage is also, that the costs are so minimal, that alone the savings in phone charges pay for the iPad mini. I do make mostly international calls, of course they are mostly free.

This won't happen,i saw rumours about Note 3 with 6.3"" inches..and the note 2 was already too much bigger to not make me look very awkard to see with it at my ear...imagine what will be a mini at your head..ok you could use Bt headset...but i think Apple wants to take phone and tablets divided and not united in a sort of Phablet...,for me Tablets start from 6 inches and Phones stop at 5 inches max.

I do not lend much credence to this thread's main information in the first place, but even if I assume it's factual, I think the notion that it's due to Samsung/Android taking over (and Apple/iPhone, therefore, is doooomed!) is highly exaggerated.
Samsung has just announced that it reached the landmark figure of 100 million Galaxy phones sold since 2010 including 40 million of Galaxy S3. If I'm not mistaken, the Galaxy S3 was launched in the summer of 2012. On Apple's side, analysts predictions of iPhone sales for the last quarter is somewhere between 45 to 60 million (we'll know the actual figures next week). So all in all, iPhone is doing very well, thanks!
A possibility, though, is that the older models 4 and 4S have an important share of sales, which might hinder the iPhone 5 sales performance.

And when someone says something like this it loses all credibility.

And people who can't stop commenting about people who like Apple products and the iphone specifically can go to XDA and other Android forums to express their loyalty to the Android lord.

38 pages of response for a "something" that turned out to be a big "nothing". Even the mainstream media figured out that the conclusions being drawn were probably not accurate...

Stop stressing about it, it'll come up during the earning's call next week and then we'll know. Apple will provide their forecasts for the upcoming quarter, they will provide unit count for the previous quarter that ended in December and all will be well in the world.

----------

That might take 7-9 months.

Try 1 week. This is about the Jan-Mar quarter, Apple will be providing some guidance about it at their earning's call and in their financials. SEC rules.

I think this is a smart idea. No need for a fire sale like other companies do to rid excess stock. If Apple always make just enough stock to cover demand then all good.
