I can buy two nexus 4 unlocked for the price of the iPhone 5 unlocked.

I can buy a nexus 4 and a nexus 7 for the price of one iPhone 5.

I can buy a nexus 4 and a nexus 10 for the price of one iPhone 5.

Apple fans, you seriously need to reconsider what you are doing with your money.... spending it in outdated software...

How can you not see what's going on??? HOW??? What's wrong with you???

It's been on TV, so I count it as an ad. Everyone I know loves it.

Google isn't trying to sell anything in it though.

Maybe 'google search' but that's a far stretch.

Its literally something Google does at the end of every year, gather its top searches/most memorable moments of the year and mashes into a cool video.

While I agree the iPhone is expensive, I don't think saying buying 2 of one thing is better than 1 of something else is a valid argument.

The value is in the eye of the beholder. You could say you could buy 10 nice cars made by Ford instead of one made by Ferrari would be a better deal. But if someone wants and is willing to pay for the Ferrari then that is up to them.

And please I'm not saying android is ford and ios is a Ferrari, just the argument isn't a valid one.

Another thing is android devices tend to get price cuts whereas apple device generally don't, so you could also argue that they keep their value more.

If this is in any way true I hope they (Apple) are taking note of the expectations and trends of the market. They display is bigger yet people who see it don't see that. They see a phone thats got a smaller screen than any other $200 phone out there. And I can't blame those people for not choosing it any more. We can throw in the stale OS and features bit too if you want.

I would make more fun of your whacky conspiracy thinking and your hypocritical agreement with a random source from a third rate site but I'm too busy reading about the tragic death of Aaron Swartz caused by the out of control US government.

Ha ha. I think more than a few conspiracy nuts are starting to see things now.

Yes, poor Mr. Swartz....

This might be as good of a time as any to bitch about the totally ****** Apple ads of late.

When your stiffest competition is putting out stuff like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xY_MUB8adEQ

And Apple is putting out this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM9U70HgLsQ

It's time to think outside the box.

haha, that's an awesome summary of the year! That guy was pure nuts to jump from that height in the balloon! I watched a good documentary about it he is brave, but equally so was Mr Cameron going to the deepest point of an ocean!

Apple's TV ads have been utterly boring and horrible IMO, who cares about the noise cancelling microphone? Hardly new, neither is the panoramic photo mode, they seem to be getting desperate?

I'm always wary of stories like these.

Someone stands to profit from shorting the stock, even if this story does turn out to be true for the stated intention (as revealed in the next earnings report).

10% of the initial investment in the last and only 3 dividend payments.

Seriously, I am more than aware that I've theoretically made nothing until I sell my shares, but at the same time I have been able to leverage the shares value to endorse my business, my home loan, and contracts valued in the millions.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

It is exactly why I said if you didn't buy Apple early on (2000 vs 2006, it matters not) it is really a worthless stock to have in your portfolio. Why you are trying to argue against this point makes you sound like you're in high school (So put that in your pipe and smoke it, really?).

iOS UI overhaul long overdue

I was surprised Apple didnt refresh iOS with iOS 6, really was.

I think they will react for iOS 7 though.

Something like this seems so Apple like, and a natural evolution that would make it seem modern its crazy it hasnt been implemented:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMi6Si4nN4k

But they need to go beyond the home screen, and also all the little pop ups and buttons could do with a new lick of paint, 5-6 years really is an awful long time in mobile space to have same look.. just modernise it a little.

Theyve dont the hard part, and got superb foundation and engine in iOS, just needs a new lick of paint.

Lookl what that one guy above achieved and would seriously improve iOS perception!

people like new interfaces I think thats why even WP8 is selling at all.. just something different.

on that same note... expect GOOGLE to react at Google I/O this year as well. They dont mess around

So because you have a bit of money you just buy any old *****?

Whats that saying about a fool and his money again? :D

You seem to be the fool to tell everyone the saying.

Considering the iPhone 5 is a huge screw up....

Yes, they may be rushing out the iP5 and bringing in the iP6...why?

Huge problems that are beginning to bubble up with regards to call quality.

Here is a 40 page thread of people that have a lot of trouble with nearly identical call quality problems; https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4348915?start=555&tstart=0

..and a demo of one of the problems; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvyHS_4ZmeE

My guess is they will want to sweep this under the rug fast before everyone demands a fix/refund for their voice calling useless iphone 5...

This worries me a little...

You should be worried. When I look at the S3's screen real estate it makes me envious. Which would you rather watch a movie on? I want an iPhone but with a large screen. Figure it out Apple.

IPhone 4 was my last iPhone. And not for one day did I miss the small screen or outdated OS.

Hopefully the low sales will convince Apple to once again innovate.

Hi its Tim,
Just wanted to send a shout out to all you mac rumor posters,
Your input has been so valuable to help us make better decisions in the future.
Boy did we blow it with the iPhone 5 we thought releasing a phone that was lighter, stronger , faster especially when compared to Samsungs latest offerings (see andantech processor ratings) better headphones would have sold much better. Actually we thought it was selling pretty good better than any previous model we have made, thank god for that WSJ article I guess our internal numbers were all wrong! I am so lucky to be able to get advise from all you folks at MacRumors with your extensive experience and knowledge running fortune 500 companies similar to ours the largest in the world.
Wow! I have been blind to our lack of innovation until i read this site thank you so much, again.
I thought our mind boggling number increase in sales of iPads and our inability to produce iPad mini's quick enough to meet demand was a good sign.
Back to the drawing board. I was blinded by those statistics where over 90% of mobile internet traffic is coming from iOS devices, oh well.
After reading these post I realized I have failed the mac community so I went out and bought a galaxy 3. WOW so innovative. The smooth plastic, the unique form factor, the guy at the store said it was so powerful i would need 3 extra batteries to get through the day. And I love the unique look. And so many options I have spent the last 3 day changing my backgrounds and icons while jony was busy editing a feature film on his iPhone. Why didn't we think of that "make the screen bigger" Those Samsung dudes have outdone themselves with innovation. can't wait to tell Jony to design a new iPhone with just a slightly bigger screen than the galaxy. I have a great idea for the ad campaign "the next slightly bigger than the next big thing is here"
Oh I even saw their new tablet comes with a stylus, gasp! We should have made a stylus for the three users of 230 million who requested one, those poor bastards now have to go to amazon and spend $1.50 for one. On that subject I feel shattered i didn't think of adding a physical keyboad like Microsoft did with the Surface. Boy did we miss the boat on that one. I actually heard they sold a Surface last week forgot to send Balmer a congratulations letter. Yeah I guess we did offer a keyboard for the original iPad as an accessory but they never sold.
Again I wanted to thank all of you for your insight and showing us the light
I don't know why we even have over 40,000 people working at Apple including the smartest engineers in the world, best computer programmers and one of the best run business management teams with the tightest channel inventory control in the world ever put together, stupid me I could of
gotten so much farther from all of your insights. PS I heard the 49's are looking for a new coach would any of you happen to have any experience in that department?

Tim

ps
I forgot to ask you guys since i am sure with all your knowledge from owning companies more successful than mine i need some investment advice.
I have this problem we have been making quarterly revenue of around 36 billion a quarter this has led to after expenses the accumulation of over 130 billion dollars in cash do you guys have any investment ideas?
we were thinking about buying the country Greece but Jony hates Gyros

Hey, well done. I still want an iPhone with a larger screen though. ;)

I just can't believe that some Wall St types are still falling for this and selling now at around $500 or below. It is a certainty that AAPL will receive a boost-up on the 23rd. The only question is of what magnitude.

The higher the top, the longer the drop. There are cracks in the Apple armor. They will become more like Samsung and the companies they mock as they go for the low end market. The elite, exclusive brand is being rapidly watered down.

I guess I'm in the minority here when I say that I was fine with the screen size iPhone 4 and 4S offered. I rushed to upgrade to iPhone 5 on launch and found myself not liking the elongated display.

I guess I will also be in the minority when I say that I still chuckle when I see a VHS tape sized (for those old enough to remember those, for those not insert waffle-sized instead of the VHS tape) devices next to someones face. I know I know, I'm old school and I don't use the trendy BT headsets I still put my phone next to my face when I'm talking.

So in the end, I guess am against having a larger screen... I am against carrying a waffle/VHS tape sized devices in my pocket and I absolutely refuse to buy a satchel, backpack, or any other name for a "purse" you want to use even though my european roots tell me that there is nothing wrong with a "satchel" ... I do a whole bunch of things on my iPhone and absolutely love it, I have hundreds of apps, songs, photos, movies, and if I want to have a larger screen I simply move to my iPad.

With the miniaturization of all tech components and the continuously "mini" things why are we looking for larger screens on the phones? :)

The elongated iPhone5 is like an old boombox remote. I will wait for the next one even though i could upgrade now. Also the materials feel inferior when compared to the 4/4S in my hand.

[quote:] Apple SVP mentioned Apple will not sacrifice quality over what the market wants.

yeah, as they have done with iMac, and so on.

----------

Those of you old enough to remember Apple's 1st era of market dominance in the early 90's, before it fell off the cliff of near bankruptcy, only to be saved by Steve Jobs' return --- this will feel all too familiar: Apple pioneers a new market segment, dominates market, refuses to budge on price. A competitor comes out with an inferior but widely-licensed product (then, Microsoft/IBM), and gradually Apple loses market share to the point of obscurity.

All this stuff of Phil Schiller's -- "we're not going to reduce price to compromise quality" -- is the same tape recorder as Apple's approach in the late 80's, when Apple did not see it coming. Apple did not see it coming then, and Apple does not see it coming now.

The $120 billion cash pile perhaps makes Apple less vulnerable, but, as you can see from RIM Blackberry, a cash pile will prolong the torture as the victim dies a slow rather than quick death, but a cash pile cannot save you when the market says, "Hey, iPhones aren't cool anymore." That is the point of the death spiral, when a sufficient critical mass says, "Hey, Apple's not cool anymore".

And don't anyone say that's not possible.

All I can say is, the seeds of arrogance have been sowed. Apple thumbing its nose at important market segments, saying they "can't please everyone", and only focusing on the crowd that brings in the money. Well, I have news for Apple. That segment that Apple is kowtowing to, the consumers, are the ones that can, within the space of 1-2 years, decide that Apple is no longer cool, and move to the next cool thing. Is Apple then going to crawl back to its original user-base - the creatives, the professional artists, and start supporting them again.

In history, there is a phenomena known as castles crumbling because of a poor foundation. Apple is destroying its solid base by only focusing on the crowd that, apparently, seemingly, brings in the most money. But, like RIM/Blackberry, that crowd can spin on a time and turn on Apple in an instant.

Apple has rejected the strategy of building a broad user-base, by rejecting its formerly core user base.

Take for example, Apple's 6 year total rejection of the professional graphics market that needs matte or anti-glare screens on its desktop equipment. Do you realise that Apple - as a major supplier of a worldwide OS -- does not provide ANY desktop hardware that has an anti-glare screen.

All fanboys can laugh, and think it is funny, citing that Apple just can't please everyone, and claiming that everyone loves glossy screens.

Well, when the fickle users do a RIM/Blackberry on Apple, at the tipping point when they decide that Apple is no longer cool, Apple will realise the folly of not catering to a wider user-base.

If you think this a rant, you just need to refresh your memories to the recent past when Blackberry was the cool kid on the block, when we admired people with Blackberries, and it was a status symbol.

Anyone who thinks that that can't happen to Apple is no student of history, and those types are bound to repeat history's mistakes.

2nd best post ever.

I think Apple has always had some unseen assistance. Their business is like GE or an oil company, too big to let "Steve" rule over.

It would make some sense, sales in Dec aren't the same as sales in Jan. It also makes sense that there was no huge reason to upgrade as well. And to the "top rated" commenter, I hope you're not talking about one of the best user experiences and the best industrial design on a phone.

You are 100% correct as far as I'm concerned. I honestly can't see a good reason to buy an iPhone over a top of the line Android phone. Unless you like smallish, non innovative devices, the iPhone hasn't much to offer.

I guess there really is a lot in a caveman sized, non innovative device with THOSE designs for some people.

Interestingly enough, this is also the first time AT&T didn't offer me an early upgrade for my contract since I bought the 4S. If they had, I would've bought a 5 with glee. I wonder how many people had the same thing happen.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I tried to upgrade to the 5 from the 4S, but AT&T wanted a early upgrade fee of $300. I'm thinking that one of the reasons may have to do with those of us who still have a "unlimited" data plan.
