The endless question is how will this work for people that wear prescription glasses. There are a lot of us.
Contact lens. Or you can buy Apple-certified attachable prescription lenses.

These will not cannibalize VP. To do so suggests people are buying VP - they're not. Plus, these are tow totally different products with two totally different targets (and hopefully two totally different starting price points). VP was an uncharacteristically first-to-market statement from Apple, has legit promise, and not even remotely dead. Glasses will likely see a much quicker adoptions rate - for all sorts of obvious reasons. Functionality aside, I'm super curious what they will look like. I have a hard enough time picking frames as it is. 🥸

Meh, not sure this brings me something I need or want. They'd have to completely replace my regular glasses, which are light and very sturdy (titanium). Surprise me Apple!

Apple needs a new twist. It cannot just follow the lead of others. That’s not the Apple way. Also, I hope Apple partners with Maui Jim or a comparable sunglass lens maker. Otherwise, I will continue using my “dumb” sunglasses.

I am quite concerned with all these cameras. I am aware there are plenty of surveillance cameras, but this will just be an even more constant exposure to cameras. And the risk of data that might be leaked or stolen, or requested by the US government. Or Apple changing its stand on privacy.

I guess there is no going back. We will have to see how it is implemented, but I am sceptical.

A rumor that doesn't say it will happen in 2027? I can't believe it. 🤣

Indeed. And the people that wear contacts were willing to put a pieces of plastic on their eyeballs to avoid wearing glasses.

Vanity? So either no one scuba dives in public or.... people use them as expected and no on cares. Likewise with AVP. Mostly it's the people that don't have one that seem to worry about such.

Users care because we're mostly social creatures. If you want to socially isolate yourself, then the AVP is perfect.

Heh, I’m gonna take these to school

Can't wait for these conversations to start happening.

Principal: "Ma'am, he can't wear these to school."
Parent: "But he can't see without glasses!"
Principal: "Ma'a'm, the glasses are sentient. They're doing his homework for him."
Parent: "He's four! Why are you giving him homework when he's only four years old?!"
Principal: "Ma'am, it was just some addition problems—"
Parent: "I'll sue!"
Principal: "Ma'am, he called 911 with his glasses because he thinks he can't get through the day without coffee."
Parent: "And?!"
Principal: "He's four."

I've never seen (or perhaps never noticed) anyone wearing the Meta Raybans. But I vividly remember everyone freaking out at the thought of a camera on Google Glass becoming a flagrant privacy violation. I wonder if that's warn off or if the Meta glasses simply have such a small userbase as to be virtually insignificant.

The Apple Vision Pro is clearly different in that it's not exactly an incognito device...

I guess I don't understand the comparison made in some comments to Vision Pro. Perhaps I'm missing something. With these glasses you can take photos/videos (probably low-res) and have audio...but there won't be any video.

I'm sure there will be some less gimmicky uses, like real-time translation. However, I don't foresee this as something for daily use. I think it'll be 90% gimmicky and very useful for some specific uses a handful of times.

Once Apple gets into AR...then we're talking! This is when the phone goes away.

"but better made." = 499 bucks more expensive 🤣
Good one!

Also interesting about the "better made" comment is that Meta doesn't make the frames. Apple is implying they will make better frames than companies such as Ray Ban, Oakley, other Luxoticca companies, and Warby Parker that have been designing/manufacturing frames for decades. Meta was smart to partner with established frame designers and then seamlessly integrate the tech inside.

I am curious how much better Apple will do as they play catch-up and I've honestly been pretty impressed with my Meta Ray Bans so far -- features work well, smartglasses feel just as comfortable as my non-smart glasses, clever in-case charging, and battery life gets me through 4-5 hours of continuous work meetings. A quick charge during my lunch break gets me through the rest of the workday. With lighter schedules I've gotten through a full work day of calls, meetings, and some music listening, and a couple of photos and video recordings with 16% battery remaining. Over time the battery life will expectedly decrease but by then I will have moved onto the next-gen smartglass...time will tell if it will be a product from Meta, Google/Samsung, or Apple.

Guess you'll be needing AirPods for some functions for better audio quality and unless you want everyone around you to be able to listen in on your music, conversations, and other activities.
Probably, but it’s very likely that anyone interested in buying these already has AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones.

What I don’t get why they all seem to te to fit everything into regular looking glasses. I want those visor-like things as in Star Trek or cyberpunk or a cool sci-fi movie 😎
With plenty of room for batteries and tech...
I never was eager to have to rely on regular glasses

Next year ... of course ... had given up waiting for these and bought two new pair glasses at Costco in January ...

If these glasses somehow work with Air Pods for hearing augmentation, that would be cool as I need that now too.

Exactly.
Apple would probably skip plastic and use aero-space-satellital-medical grade steel so the frames alone will weight half a pound.
