Apple sold 20 million in 7 years
Roku dold 8 million in 6 years

Yet 37% of the surveyed households use roku and 24% apple tv?

How does that work?

i wont give Roku any more money until they bring Netflix channel support to devices besides the 3. Roku keeps trying to throw Netflix under the bus, but Netflix has channel support on every other device. Something fishy there.

its called understanding statistics and then applying them to the bigger pictures.

First, the article give the following

Google's Chromecast and the Roku were the two highest-selling streaming media devices in the U.S. last year as the Apple TV fell to third place, according to new data from Parks Associates"

One. This is USA only. Not internationally. in 2013 only the following sales numbers:
AppleTV: 2m
Roku: 3.8
Chromecast: 3.8

However, the numbers you are using are international total unit sales over the course of the lifetime of the products.

Which has a variety of other factors into it besides just how many sold. For example, since 2007, Apple TV has been available in dozens of countries (Sure the content might not be great out of the US, but it's still available for sale). On the flip side, Roku is not quite so big or internationally known. Even here in Canada, Roku's weren't available through retailers till the last couple years at all (and usually a generation behind).

I had an Apple TV for about a week earlier this year with the grand idea of using mirroring to make playing iPad games more like a console. It wasn't nearly as good as I had hoped so I returned it. The only thing the Apple TV has over the competition is iTunes and its movie library for renting/buying though more and more these days Amazon and Vudu get the same movies at the same time (fewer and fewer iTunes exclusives), making the Apple TV inferior in pretty much every way to the competition. Until Apple releases a better, more open version, I'll stick with my Roku 3.

*stares at his unopened Chromecast box*

Oh you bought a Chromecast from Google and didn't open it?

Tell us again how this hurts Google's sales and numbers for Chromecast?

They still got money. And it still counts regardless if you open it or not.

Yes I realize you probably don't own a Chromecast because Google is 'evil' and you just wanted to make Chromecast look 'bad' by posting that comment.

Oh i understand stats..
But nothing here is about understanding the numbers and applying them to the big picture .
The big picture is the world.
The small pic is the is surveyed house holds.
U can not extrapolate or interpolate neither from the other.

But thank you for pointing out the the 20 million vs 8 million is world numbers.
I missed that one..

I have a Roku 2, a Roku 3, and an Apple TV 3.

I want another ATV, but have been putting off the purchase, hoping Apple will release the 4th generation. Those hopes have been dwindling as the months go by.

I own all three, and I must say, the Apple TV takes the edge over the others. The Chromecast is pretty great, but since I'm already tied into the Apple ecosystem, the Apple TV just works better for me. The one thing the Chromecast exceeds at is Plex functionally. Roku is fine for use on bedroom TVs that don't need "full horsepower".

http://www.appletvhacks.net/2013/06/14/how-to-install-plex-on-apple-tv-windows-tutorial/

----------

I still don't understand the arrogance of some people here and why some cannot see beyond just apple products.

The roku 3 when paired with the plex media server, and any other streaming services such as netflix, hulu, and amazon prime make it one kick ass box. Plus, with the remote being a wifi connection you can put the box anywhere and never have to see it.

How good is the AirPlay feature with all my iOS devices? We use that often. The Home Sharing with my Mac as a media server is also great and I can get to everything from the Computer app.

----------

I have two Apple TV 3's and Roku 3 and I must say I like my Roku a lot more just because of how much more is available for it.

Really all I can do on my ATV3 is Netflix and mirroring, mirroring works surprisingly well so I like that.

vs having native Plex support etc on the Roku.

I hope Apple TV stops becoming a side project and turns into something more.

We tend to watch more on the HuluPlus app on our ATV3.

----------

I'm disappointed in Apple. Since I bought my iPad Air it has crashed multiple times more often then then iPad 2 I had before. Only after a few updates it's become a bit more reliable but I can't trust the device for creating reports.

Apple TV, not sure, I've got the latest version. It worked great a year ago, now it works fine but in combination with Plex it often restarts, just in the middle of the movie. Some say this is due of Plex software but others at Plex and some "independent" users stated that this has to do with the iPad3.
Either way, the "experience" I've with an iPad Air is less positive then when I had the iPad 2.

Something is definately wrong with your iPad Air. My wife and I used an iPad 2 since they were released. I bought an iPad Air when they were released and she got the iPad 2. The Air has been rock solid since iOS 7.1.
Try backing up your Air, wipe is completely clean and set it up as a new iPad, then restore it from the backup. It should be solid, if not you may have a hardware issue.
I use my for everything, Screen Sharing with my Mac, Dropbox storage, Devices over IP management, Airplay to ATV 3, etc.

Since I have both Apple and Android in my house, its useful to have both Apple TV and Chromecast.

One thing the Chromecast falls flat on though, is when my internet goes down, but the router still works. Chromecast fails to be able to stream Plex stuff from within my LAN. Apple TV did it just fine.

give the apple tv gigabit ethernet, 802.11ac, and an A7 processor and I'll think about it. Right now it is running a single-core A5 (slower than an iPad 2), 10/100 ethernet, 802.11n 1x1 (150mbps max). No wonder airplay is laggy.

I would love to see them combine the Mac mini ,ATV3 and upgraded to modern specs released as a real media server. Dual SSD (one for internal TM backup), multi A8 proc.

That's a bit silly to buy something you don't even want.

I love my Chromecast.

it was a gift. silly.

tell us how you incorrectly assumed that I bought it instead of receiving as a gift. tell us.

I was wondering if anyone has the Chromecast and a Note2.
I just read that now you can mirror your phone's screen a la Airplay on your chromecast.

Does this work with any phone including the Note2?

I love my Apple TV but it is very dated! All its used for is for airplay. But that's all I really need a media streamer for as I have a HTPC with all of my media on it. The Chromecast is an amazing little gadget however. I feel that Apple has waited too long to refresh their media player that i'm afraid they've been left behind.

Oh, I see how this works! In which case:

*looks at Apple TV with thick layer of dust and no remote (I lost it months ago and see no reason to find it because I just use my Chromecast).*

I can see why. After seeing a work colleague stream/transcode multiple file types to the chromecast over wifi you can really see how "old school" and locked down the apple tv is. And i love my apple TV, its just you have to have the correct file, in iTunes, to then play it back direct through the Apple TV. If it wasn't for the nice channels they put on it and the iTunes movies, it would've been canned years ago.

I have never tried Roku but I got 2nd Gen AppleTV for 4 years. Never once I have been thinking to get a newer one or other alternative like Google Chrome. I think most people doing the same. AppleTV is not something you upgrade (hardware) every year which explains the lower number of sales.

Actually Apple do care about AppleTV by giving us a new software update periodically. I remember how happy I was when they include Crunchyroll in Australia, since I am a subscriber and Anime fans. That's the best thing ever happened!

I also use Beamer (a few dollars Mac app). So all kinda of new movies in all kind of formats plus subtitles can be beamed directly to AppleTV without the use of iTunes whatsoever. Easy and fast.

And I like to play iRadio through it. I have better sound systems attached to my TV then my iMac.

no, you did it wrong when you inserted the parenthesis.

Airplay with MacBook is still a laggy piece of crap no matter what the speed your internet

that's because airplay doesn't use your internet, it uses your local network

And on that, apple DOESNT proudly sell the Apple TV. While they call it a hobby, there's no advertising for it and unless you go into a store already knowing what it is, you would probably pass by it assuming it was a Mac mini or something.

you want Apple to proudly sell something that you call a "sloppy mess". contradicting don't you think? Apple will start "proudly selling" and "advertising" it when it's no longer a "sloppy mess".

Then the Mac Pro. The device looks great and the usage of Thunderbolt 2 is great, especially for editing purposes when you need to load and safe 4K video material or do both at the same time. However, the machine is quite costly compared to a PC. It depends of course if you're into using thunderbolt 2, and if you do the Mac Pro is a fine machine and even worth paying a bit more money for it. If you do professional editing but you don't make use of thunderbolt 2 then you might consider buying a PC version...

Some people will go with a PC instead of the new mac pro since the news that upgrades will last until the end of 2015.

I think Apple lost it's magic to be honest. That is for many users not for me, I still love Mac's surroundings meaning it's operating system.

Anyway, I sure miss the "think different" periode.

So magic would be to build a square box like everyone else? Where is the magic in that? The mac pro isn't designed for a casual user.
