I recently purchased an Amazon Fire TV. Previously I had purchased 1 ATV2 that is jailbroken and a ATV3 that is setup with PlexConnect. I really just want apple to open up the apple tv a little bit more. I looked at both Roku and the Chromecast but i didn't want either of those. The chromecast has no interface without a smartphone, which isn't acceptable for my usage. The only thing that Roku has that would interest me is Plex but there is no way to install XBMC on the roku.

I ended up going with the Fire TV because I can run Plex and XBMC without issues.

I haven't bought any of those mentioned I suppose it's mostly down to where you obtain your content. I have a HP Microserver with Sickbeard et al, downloads all my shows and I use Plex to consume media on my iPads and via DLNA TV.

ATV is that Apple product that has so potential, but stays crippled because Apple is working on a new one, but they can't secure the content deals and it has been 7 years..

I have a samsung blu ray with built in Netflix. I'd like to replace it with an ATV, but then I'd have to buy a blu ray.. and I'm out of HDMI inputs. I don't think this exists.. but I'd like a blu ray player with built in Apple TV. Or rather an Apple TV with a built in blu ray player.

It's really too bad because I only have a galaxy note2 and I wanted to give my family a way to mirror their phone :(

You'd hope that consumers enjoy seeing a company make profits that they can invest into future research, developments etc.. So yes, actually profits are an important thing.

I'm sure this only holds true on an Apple forum. Or do you hope gas prices keep rising so the oil companies make a huge profit? How about you landlord raising your rent or your bank increasing their interest rates on your mortgage so the make a huge profit? Do you want your supermarket to charge more so they increase their margins? How about the electric company? How about your cell company?

I'm an unusual consumer, I care more about myself and my wallet than I do about how much money multi billion dollar corporations make. And I bet that other than Apple, you do too.

So is AppleTV

Im still using the 2nd gen 720p. They aren't going to sell more if they are t going to offer new features and capability.

Thank you. I desperately want to upgrade my ATV2, but Apple isn't upgrading it. Also, the interface is a mess. They're just cramming in new, mostly worthless, apps.

Chromecast itself is supported in Android 2.3 and later.

Each individual app has it's own requirement though for minimum OS version.

Mirroring however I only for limited number of devices for now, I believe this is the current list:
Nexus 4
Nexus 5
Nexus 7 (2013)
Nexus 10
Samsung Galaxy S4
Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition
Samsung Galaxy S5
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Samsung Galaxy Note 10
HTC One M7
HTC One M7 Google Play Edition
LG G3
LG G2
LG G Pro 2

Contextual comprehension would go much further than inference in this situation, but I don't expect much from you.
And what exactly rubbed you wrong today that you find it necessary to insult other people on this forum or are simply a d*ck in general?

Please let me demonstrate you why the US-centric information given in this US-centric article is worthless and my question after numbers for sales outside the world makes more than sense.

Ask yourself – based on that article – if the Apple TV is successful. Think about that for a couple of seconds before reading on.

Came to a conclusion?

If you said the Apple TV is a flop, you are wrong.

If you said it's a success, you are also wrong.

The only correct answer would have been that you cannot decide because that solitary piece of information given in the article is not sufficient to come to a valid conclusion.

While the US market is important, it's by far not the only one (*gasp!*) and it's not necessarily even the biggest one (*GASP!!!*). The Apple TV is present on far more markets than the Chromecast and especially the Roku. It's quite possible that the sales on these markets more than make up for any trailing behind the competitors in the US.

But do we know from this article? No, we don't.

So, what does that article actually say us of real informational value about the Apple TV's standing versus its competitors? Nothing. Didn't notice that? I didn't expect that much from you.

Anyway: Welcome to my ignore list.

How useful is the Fire TV without an Amazon account/Amazon Prime?

Also, can Roku run without a credit card now? The last time I looked at it, it was basically impossible to get Roku up and running without giving it a credit card number.

Apple TV also basically requires an Apple ID/iTunes, but, you can establish that with an iTunes card. Then, you don't have to worry about visitors (e.g. kids, grandkids) spending a bunch of money on downloads or first-run movies etc.

Agreed. Huge missed opportunity. An App Store would have made the Apple TV as must have as the ipod, iPhone or iPad when they were first released. Hardly anyone knows what an Apple TV even is.

You know.. I used to think that too, but then it got me thinking about an example of this. Look at the Xbox 360 vs the PS3 with regards to media apps. The Xbox 360's media apps are very clearly built on top of the same framework and they all have a nearly identical (and pretty good) UX. It seems clear that Microsoft has done the majority of the work on each of those video apps. The result is that the UX on the 360 versions of media apps tends to be much nicer than on the PS3, where it seems like most of the work was left to the content publishers. It's night and day in some cases. I think it's in Apple's best interest to be very picky about the quality and UX of the apps they allow on Apple TV right now, because ultimately it affects their Apple TV sales if they have crappy versions of these media apps on the device. There's no competition for streaming HBO shows, for example. They have whatever implementation of HBO Go that's on their device and that's it. So they have to make sure it doesn't suck, or people will just switch to a device where it doesn't.

compared to how many phones and devices it is up against Apple seems to perform great coming in behind Chromecast and Roku. Nice job.

Wow you have four 4K televisions??

Agree on the missed opportunity, so far, of not having an App Store for it. I have an aTV2 and rarely ever use it. Apple TV has so much potential, but I've grown weary of having much hope for its future.
Apple can be so slow and frustrating. Sigh.

Haha. No, I don't have four 4K TV's, got to have that feature for only one TV.
I use my Apple TV mainly to stream Spotify from my MacBook/iPhone. I would put one in in each livingroom, the garage, and the bedroom. I know there are other recievers and different audio solutions that support Airplay, but I really like the simplicity, price, and easy integration with older systems that Apple TV offers. Basically anything with an optical Audio port can now be an Airplay reciever, so I spend $99 on adding the function to each room rather than $400 a per room for a new reciever.

I have Apple TV in the bedroom and Chromecast in the living room. Both get used equally. Since the Apple TV is in the bedroom, I wanted to get another streaming device, but I didn't want to spend $90+ on it. The Chromecast at $30 (when I purchased it) seemed the most like viable option.
