Gold, My sisters school still uses the newton for kids with broken arms and such :).

I still have a Newton 2100... haven't used it in more than a year, and only then to see if it still worked...

Anyway, the bottom of the Apple logo isn't fuzzy; the logo's been treated with a Photoshop "Bevel and Emboss" effect. Suffice it to say, the logo's been a plain black or white knock-out in print since the rainbow was retired.

Besides, while everyone is expecting some new Mac Pro's (still don't like that name) and Leopard may be closer than many think... Springing a media event with less than two business days' notice is never a smart move.

Fake.

Some bozo wanted to see how many hits he could get on his Flickr account.

Guys, forget about the font. Apple's current font is different from their old one 5 or 6 years ago, so it's not impossible that Apple is changing ther style again. For people to say "omg it's a different font111" is one of the most sophomoric statements ever.

If anything is sophomoric, it's this piece of work.

It's a clear, easily identifiable fake for that very reason. Inept typography and strong, consistent, and creative marketing do not go hand in hand.

One of the worst fake ads I've seen for a while. Why can't people take a little care and pride in what they're doing? There are dozens of people on this site alone who could produce a better piece of work than this.

This doesn't even warrant a thread; it's a complete joke.

Fake. Absolutely.

If Apple has an event, this certainly isn't one of the invites. Even if that was a 'standard Apple font' (which it's not), that is probably the ugliest typesetting I've seen in awhile. The leading (space between lines) looks horrible and inconsistent. It looks like the way that Photoshop, or Microsoft Word lays out text, and I would imagine that Apple would use InDesign or maybe Quark to create any professional design.

You are absolutely right. The line spacing and font look funny. Real designers pay huge attention to leading, kerning, and the like.

I just don't think that commenting on a font is a good enough argument. But that's my opinion.

Fonts are EXTREMELY important companies, espically one like Apple where it is so consistent and prominent. Fonts come part of an identity of how one company is seen. I bet you would recognize Apple Myriad if it was just printed somewhere almost instantly, which is the point anyway.

And besides, a company as design-anal as Apple would never release something that not only was in a mediocre generic incorrect font, but also something spaced so terribly.

One only needs to see those imperfections to realize that someone on Flickr stole all of our attention for a few minutes.

Yet, fortunately this turd will get flushed away from our memories and some teenage pimplegeek can tell his grandchildren he made Page 2. Everyone goes home happy.

Auld Lang Syne isn't a band – it's the title of the song, which translates roughly as 'days of long ago'. It's actually a poem written by Robert Burns – thought to be inspired by older folk songs – and is traditionally sung at midnight on New Years Day over on this side of the Atlantic.

Yeah. Wow. I mean... just... wow. It's sung on the other side of the Atlantic, too, which is why I find the ignorance -- well, astounding, frankly. So much that I thought the post was a joke at first.

There are things that I just can't imagine going through life and not knowing. And this is one of them. Wow.

If this is real, shouldn't the message read "Should old acquaintance be forgotten..." instead of "Should old acquaintance be forgot..."? I guess Apple's done this before with "Think Different," though.

I believe this invitation's fake, but I do think it's very likely that Apple will host an event between now and March.

Sorry for the caps, but HOW CAN YOU PEOPLE BE UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS SONG? I'm absolutely floored by the ignorance. It's in practically every goddamn movie set in the Christmas holiday season. It's still sung by people at New Year celebrations.

Get away from your computers and live a bit. Please. And research a bit before forming an opinion and throwing in your two cents.

if this is real, apple needs to fire their proofreaders... i mean, questions like "should old acquaintances be forgot?" usually end in question marks... call me crazy...

No, actually, it really shouldn't. The sentence is in the subjunctive mood, e.g. "were he to return", etc. I think its funny that all these smart asses think Auld Lang Syne is a band, or that Robert Burns' "grammar is appalling".

That notwithstanding, however, the invitation is obviously fake.

A nice image and again something that has to do with the solar system. I still wait for the first OS after the big cats season. They ran out of big cats (Panthera species) now and I suppose they might switch. One has to admit though that the first release of OS X was not a big cat but a cheetah which is only a distant relative to the Panthera cats (Lion, Panther, Jaguar, Tiger and Leopard). Anyhow people will usually refer to cheetahs as big cats because the look so alike.
I am expecting to see MacOS XI Mercury or MacOS XI Lunar or MacOS XI Jupiter :D

I've never ever heard of it. Pretty sure about that. You're ignorant to think this is known all over the world. Research a bit before forming an opinion and throwing in your two cents. It's just a forum, relax a bit, get away from your computer.

These comments were made by Americans and Canadians, or at least people who list their location as being in America or Canada. In countries where English is the first language, Auld Lang Syne can be considered a fairly common cultural reference point, and that's why it's so surprising that there are people who've managed to live possibly decades without taking it in. Furthermore, one poster was proactive enough to google the phrase but didn't even read the results thoroughly enough to figure out that Auld Lang Syne wasn't a band name.

But I think it goes without saying that I never expected, say, a Chinese or a even a Dutch forum member to be as steeped in Anglo-American cultural history as a native ought to be.

There's nothing grammatically wrong with the phrase ‘think different’. I suspect you think that it should be ‘think differently’, which in fact means something subtly different. If the adverb ‘differently’ were used, then it would be to describe the verb, ‘think’. In other words, ‘think differently’ means that your manner of thinking is different from some unspecified other manner of thinking.

Whereas, the use of the adjective ‘different’ applies to the result of your thinking, in other words, ‘think different’ means ‘think with the result that your thoughts are different’ from some unspecified other person’s thoughts.

In this instance the difference in meaning is ultimately fairly negligible. However, the phrase ‘think different’ has nothing against it. When you go to the dentist, you are told to ‘open wide’, and not to ‘open widely’. The former means that you open your mouth with the result that it is wide open, the latter makes little sense (how can you do anything ‘widely’?). Many years ago my father, noting that people were confusing adjectival and adverbial usage, predicted that in the year 2000 he would hear a dentist giving the instruction ‘open widely’. His prediction came true, but just because so many people misuse adverbs for adjectives and vice versa, doesn’t mean that we all have to. After all, as Mac users don’t we ‘think different’ from the crowd?!

And the invitation is a fake, I've seen enough of these now to know the fakes. That one just looks wrong.

Me too. At MR, I'm older than dirt and rocks, so I've seen my share. This is so fake I can't believe we're discussing it.

I know the song but it's not traditionally sung here - we traditionally ring in the New Year by trying our hardest to blow up Sydney with fireworks.

Wow, everyone who didn't know the song reference should kill themselves. I can't believe they have survived for so long without knowing that song.

Wow, I bet you there are a lot of things that I know, yet you have never known. Wow.
