You blatantly make up stuff without the slightest evidence. Actually, with lots of evidence pointing fully to Apple not cooperating with the NSA the slightest bit. And ******* the NSA, it is illegal for them to spy on people in the UK or elsewhere in Europe, based on UK and EU law, and if anyone of their employees leaves the USA, they should be incarcerated immediately.

What does illegal have to do with spying?

And apple has complied with NSA.

I doubt its that. Traveling back and forth is nothing these days. The pipes are already there. Its not like apple has to build their own. It could be that some of the world has lost faith in the security of US firms so building data centres in Europe is a smart move to build back customer trust.

It is probably both. First, just because the Pipes are there doesn't mean it doesn't take time to travel them. You have to understand the amount of traffic that Apple will probably be handling in a few years. iOS is becoming the default OS for consumer usage in the U.S. and Europe probably isn't far behind. The iPhone and iPad are best in class now, but also they are the most profitable by far. So competitors are going to struggle to keep up. They can't keep throwing money into mobile when Apple takes all the profits.

Second, as you point out, the different countries will have different privacy laws. This will give Apple some leverage by diversifying their infrastructure. Frankly, I feel like they are being too conservative here. Their Cloud service has always been a bit weak. So if they can help it with some additional hardware, they should do it.

I sometimes find it amusing. "Good for the planet."

Pretty sure the "planet earth" will be just fine. With or without Homo Sapiens.

Maybe more appropriately said "Good for maximizing the utility function of humans."

:D

Do you enjoy making up nonsense?

Apple doesn't say "we won't let you spy on our citizens". Apple says "we won't let you spy on our customers".

Seriously, Apple has the money to buy a country, but to my knowledge it has not done so yet.

Still, the way things appear, it would be nice if I could store my icloud data in a country that was slightly out of reach of the NSA and government prying eyes. Although, it does seem that the European countries are complicit in the whole affair, so maybe it matters not where you store your data. :sigh:

Should mean much faster iTunes/iCloud/Apple downloads here, great!

I always find it frustrating that I do internet speed tests and get great speeds (150Mbps+) but then try any (non-Irish-hosted) downloads and I'm lucky to get 20% of that. I'd guess the 'backbone' lines in & out of Ireland are relatively limited? Having an Apple server farm should help an awful lot.

That said, I assume Apple isn't just spending €850m just to serve the Irish market, and this server farm will be serving the UK (at least) too. I wonder if part of this money is going towards better connectivity, or if there are upcoming upgrades that Apple is aware of. (I know there's one major upgrade planned with Cork getting a spur off the 100Gbps Project Express trans-Atlantic line).

This is good news, both in terms of the expansion of data centres for Apple, and the nature of their power sources compared to the alternatives.

I think everyone should just kind of assume everything they put in the cloud could be intercepted by governments nowadays, so I don't see that this of any more concern than much else as far as those issues are concerned.

What about a datacenter in Canada to make sure the NSA doesn't spy on us, eh?

cause CSIS is doing much better these days?

I'd be more worried about CSIS in Canada spying than the NSA. at least in the US with the NSA right now, people are paying attention to it and catching them in the act.

CSIS on the other hand really has no oversight. They're a tool of the Harper government. And harper has been slowly over the last few years granting CSIS secret spying powers through hidden omnibus bills, or embedding them with other bills.

Who can forget Toew's crony telling Canada's population "You're either with us, or you're with the pedophiles" when trying to pass one of their spying bills

Maybe you should learn the huge difference between "climate" and "weather".

Ah so that's why the environmental crowd is now calling it climate change instead of global warming. Anyway, yeah the climate will always be changing. Whether man in causing it to change for the worse is not settled science no matter what the left says.

People are very excited about this in Denmark. It is not every day foreign companies do such huge investments here. It is good to see the efforts toward green energy pay off in this manner.

Where I am right now the temperature is -13F. Global warming my you know what.

The reason you are cold is because the pollution destroys the ozone layer. This allows more space in and space is cold. :D

The non sense doesn't stop there, what about this crap:

"Tackling climate change" by building large server farms.

"Leaving the world better than we found it" by selling 100's of millions of iPhones which will be discarded just after a few years.

"Green Industry growth", green and industry, there is a conflict right there.

"Our commitment to environmental responsibility is good for the planet" Yeah, right.

The population of this planet widely feels that mobile phones are a necessity. As the phone technology advances people are attracted to the newer features that these phones are capable of (replacing a laptop computer for many.) There is no way of getting away from this kind of progress so people will buy phones from whatever companies supplies them.
It is good to be able to choose a company that follows high ecological standards manufacturing recyclable devices, and has eschewed the use of fossil fuels in the massive, energy intensive server farms that support these devices.
