Sure. But why does Apple need to compete in that space. Deliver all the right tools and platforms so a healthy third party app space can thrive.

Does Apple really need a Sports or Invite app? They can make a million little apps but should they really? Given how buggy their OS’es have become and the horrible UI direction some of their apps are going (look at the Photos app), they have bigger fish to fry.
Honestly, it’s because in the long run Apple will be eying up getting more sports on Apple TV+.
They have the baseball, and MLS.
They have narrowly missed out on a NFL package, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup.
No doubt their aim will be to get similar deals over the line.
Streaming providers are making a big deal about live interactive stats, as well the lack of a delay on streams these days. This is where Apple will be competing.

I’m a bartender, and I don’t really watch sports. But my customers and coworkers do. So this app helps me with small talk around sports teams from my area. I can’t get into the weeds about specific players or anything, but it’s enough for me to just know the score most of the time. It’s good for the basics.

I will say, I really don’t like that they show the betting odds in the app. Sports betting is an epidemic in the US, and this just seems to help normalize it that extra bit. Between the ads at the games, in the sponsorships, during commercial breaks, and on social media, it’s tiny by comparison. But every little thing that normalizes sports gambling leads to more and more people getting addicted and losing money. Just rubs me the wrong way.

I’ve also noticed that when the score expands from the Dynamic Island, often, a swipe up to send it back up there fails several times and then my phone just assumes I want to click on it and opens the app. I don’t want that, I just want the score to get out of my way. I’ve had the 14 Pro since launch and generally like the Dynamic Island, but this bug, that only ever happens with the Apple Sports app, drives me nuts.
