Apple Starts Rolling Out 90 Second Song Previews in iTunes

Please can you update the article to say this is the US store only? I assume it is, because I can't find any in the UK store.

What? This is bull----. Personally, I think this 90-second preview announcement is nothing out of this world. For all the people who are acting as if this were a kiss from Jesus, SERIOUSLY???
There's a few "cool" and "sweet" comments, how you're interpreting that as 'acting like it's a kiss from Jesus' responses is beyond me.
Just sayin'.

The screen shot in the post shows someone listening to a preview of song by Belly on an album called Star. That brings back some memories.

Tanya Donelly? Cool.

I'll take Kristin then!!!

Heck yes.

I don't care about 90 sec previews, but I unreservedly love Belly, the Muses and that whole era. Tanya is the best!

You know all about iTunes and are savvy enough to create an account and download music and rip it and burn it and sync it, but it never occurred to you that you can basically listen to damn near any song (in its entirety!) on YouTube? REALLY? Why is this so magical and ground-breaking? UGH. Gimme a break.

I realize how negative and "trollish" I sound in this post, but I don't care. Anyone can view all of my posts and see that I'm not one to be negative or complain about anything but, seriously, the people that are acting as if this a the best thing ever are just PUTTING ME THROUGH IT!!!

Well... to look at it at face value, 90 seconds is way better than 30 seconds isn't it? It's nice to have this change no matter how you slice it. Isn't it?

But I do think we could have gotten away with 64.5 seconds just fine. :p

Uhm not really... not everyone wants to have to go look up every song they are gonna buy on youtube before buying it... very annoying. I never even bothered. I am thinking your in the minority here.

So what it makes people happy? I'm guessing with all the caps lock and exclamation points you used it has made you very angry. Should I go off on a rant about how I don't think a 90-second preview is the end of the world? How everyone is acting like they just witnessed the holocaust?? It's not the bubonic plague buddy, it's a min extra on a preview of a song. 10 deep breaths and try to relax. anyway back on topic.....

90 MINUTE SONG PREVIEWSSSSSSSSSSSS YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH BUDDDDDYYYYYYYY!!!!!! THIS IS SOOOOO FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!

;)

I can see why some could appreciate this, but this is a meh for me. I only buy music in 2 circumstances:

1) I'm buying a song I've heard completely on the radio before, and I know I like it, I know what it sounds like, and I know that I want to buy it.

2) I'm buying a complete album from one of my favorite artists. In this case, I don't really care what it sounds like because I'm going to buy regardless -- they're my favorite artist.

The 90 second preview doesn't do much for me in those circumstances. Yet, I can see the value for others and it doesn't do me any harm, so I gave this a Thumbs Up.

About time. I wish you'd be able to preview an entire album once though. I believe one of those streaming services allowed you to do so. Either way I haven't been buying much music from iTunes since the price hike of the songs to $1.29 and basically no new albums at $9.99, it just feels like a rip-off now.

All of the digital music sites are selling music for just about the same price. Amazon used to be cheaper sometimes, but lately they seem to be the same price, at least on the albums that I buy.

This is nice but not too exciting. I preview most of the songs I buy on Youtube first.

Beatport however has had 2 minute song previews since like, the beginning of the digital music era. But their songs usually are much higher priced (higher quality, WAV available) than iTunes or Amazon.

The last big thing iTunes did for me was when it broadened it's range for EDM music like three years ago. Since then everything has been a tad drab.

I wonder how many record company executives arms' Apple had to twist (translation: pay off) in order to get this done.

I think that evolutionary adjustments like this are worth noting. I'm sure for many it won't matter, but for me there are two immediate benefits that mean I'll spend a bit more time on iTunes and a bit less at Amazon.com/mp3 for now:

It has been frustrating when I'm curious about a live song only to find that the sample is entirely or mostly just the ambient sound of applause or the band warming up for the song. Those end up on my dusty, neglected wishlist. Longer sample means that there's now triple the chance I can actually preview the actual song, which leads to an otherwise unlikely purchase.

In the case of longer story-songs (I likes me some folky stuff) it allows a greater chance to see what the songwriting is about.

I suppose a third thing that doesn't really apply to me is that when an album has "album only" tracks I can finally get enough sample of other tracks to see if they subjectively justify the purchase. I doubt it'd lead to a purchase, but it certainly increases the odds.

90 seconds is not nearly enough time for me to make a decision. I need 100 seconds. Now 100 seconds would be grand! Worthless!

None I would guess. Given the power of iTunes in the marketplace, I assume most will pinch their nose and do as they are told by Apple Consumer Electronics.

Remember, the IP holders (e.g. record companies) are free to leave at any time.

Pretty harsh stance to take with music publishers, why not just revert back to 30 seconds for those publishers that don't want the extension? The preview length is not really a big deal for me.

I like the idea of 90 second previews, that's fine and all, but I think their stance on not giving the choice to music publishers..I mean, accept it or gtfo? Kinda harsh..
