Pretty harsh stance to take with music publishers, why not just revert back to 30 seconds for those publishers that don't want the extension? The preview length is not really a big deal for me.

I am confused here, you are saying a lot of the publishers or artists are going to hate this when this could improve the selling? Yeah sure previewing the whole song would be better but still this is better than nothing, 30 sec. previews sucked **** when it came to Electronic/dance music.

About time. I wish you'd be able to preview an entire album once though. I believe one of those streaming services allowed you to do so.

You are thinking of LaLa, which Apple bought last year.

Trouble is that the publishers make a lot of money on performance fees, especially from deep pockets like Apple. If they could have got the fees on the 30 second samples, they would

I wonder how many years it will take to bring this to countries like Australia, England and Canada?

Ask the record labels and publishers. It is their call

I can understand why labels don't want you to stream the whole album because many would avoid buying it if you can just go to iTunes and stream it.

What they could do is allow one time streaming of whole albums once you log in with your iTunes account. This would ensure that you actually only stream the album once AND it would allow genuinely interested customers the chance to know what they are getting themselves into.

I would think all parties involved would be able to agree to this. I know I would love it!

There really could be something to this. It would be awesome if you could download a whole album to your iPhone, for free, give it one listen all the way through, and just like a rental, it asks you if you wish to keep the album for $9.99? Otherwise, it deletes it.

Could be a brilliant plan to drive up album sales. #1 It's already downloaded, the user just clicks buy and its theirs. #2 You got to hear the whole song/album once, and if you liked what you heard, and want to hear it again, there's little chance you're going to delete it.

I don't think the 30s was ever a problem...I would just go to youtube to hear the whole thing before deciding to buy. Apple didn't really give them a choice, haha

Glad this is finally here. 30 seconds wasn't really enough time to listen to a preview to get a good feel for it.

And for those of you that say "just go to YouTube/Grooveshark" : It's sometimes not easy to find the official song, let alone on a mobile device for a lot of songs.

Good move, Apple. I have, what I believe to be a better idea: overnight listens. You get to "rent" the music for free, possibly at low quality, and listen to it for 24 hours. That will give a person enough time to know if they really want the music, the musicians get more exposure, and Apple sells more music. Win, win, win. Or, just follow the model of others and have unlimited music streaming for a flat monthly fee. I would pay $15 a month for all the music I can stream through iTunes.

Full 90 second preview? Thank goodness we're no longer limited to partial 90 second previews.

Have iTunes Store users never heard of YouTube?

You can preview the whole song there... Crazy, I know.

Hm. So you're saying that ANY song I want from iTunes will absolutely, positively, with no exceptions be on YouTube and I'm foolish to be happy about a 90-second preview on iTunes....?

Really?

Let's test that out, shall we. I want to preview:

"All the Color Green" by Peter Breinholt, "Autumn's Joy" by Vicky Emerson, "Big Black Hole" by Jason Spooner...these artists can be found on YouTube performing other songs...but not those.

Let's not make blanket statements, shall we? I can usually find the singer I want on YouTube, but not always singing the song I want to hear. And, conversely, I can sometimes find the song I want on YouTube, but not sung by the person I want.

If I find both on iTunes, I'm going to be very happy with 90 seconds to listen to it rather than 30 seconds as that may be all I can get. It is by no means foolish or stupid of me to not use YouTube instead as YouTube may not have the song.

Man, most people seem to not care about this very much but (to me) it's a huge deal.

Yea, this is good. I buy new agey music for the clinic and sure, I want it to "match the couch" but I don't want it to turn my brain to ooze with sappy blandness. And, no, can't always find the cut on u2b.

Great now if they'd do something about TV Shows now.. 30 seconds tells you nothing about the show. The preview should be a advertisement for the episode or at least have longer run times.
