This is exactly the kind of thing that would simply have never, ever happened under Jobs.

This is what I was thinking yesterday as I drove up La Brea and saw the iPad 2 ad at Sunset.

Later I noticed that another iPad2 ad was still up by the "Rock'n'Roll Ralph's" at Sunset & Fuller.

The LaBrea & Sunset one had an original iPad ad until last year when 2 came out. I was literally thinking that exact thought as I saw them yesterday.

not only is the iPad 2 still on sale.

it makes me wonder with no NUMBER associated if this is a dying thing. I know they market the iPhones and previous iPads this way...do they billboard market the Airs or iMacs or iPods much anymore?

They had a TV commercial for the late-2010 MacBook Air but not for the mid-2011, which sold just as well. iPad is at the point where everyone knows about it.

My guess is that this is a conscious decision to leave the old billboards up, as so many are reporting it all across the country. It's just "iPad" now. Perhaps they will discreetly cover up the "2" or replace them with unnumbered billboards as they need replacing.

It still says 'iPad', it's not as if it's advertising an 'iPod Mini'. It's a currently shipping product and I'm sure whenever the billboard cycle ends they'll replace it with a 'New iPad' banner. But I think it'll stay up for a while. Yes under Steve he may have had it torn down immediately at great cost. But, assuming Tim is involved in this and would bother to think about it, he may leave it up until it's time to renew the ad.

Or maybe they're just waiting for an iPad mini until they bother putting up a banner... ;)

iPad 2 advertisements are still posted in huge (read several hundred square foot banners) banners in Miami - one when you come across 395 into downtown Miami, and one on a high-rise across from the Heat arena. Was down there last weekend and also thought that strange.

I live in LA. Apple seems to be changing the billboards over as of yesterday (4/3).

The two formerly iPad 2 billboards that I see in my commute (NW corner of La Cienega and Santa Monica & SE Corner of Fairfax and San Vicente) both changed. The copy is simply "iPad" sans prefix or suffix. Pictured is just a hand touching a (presumably) new iPad with a photo on the screen.

The timing seems very strange (i.e. late) to me. The iPad 2 billboard at NW corner of La Cienega and Santa Monica went up the same day or the very next morning of the iPad 2 announcement and remained there until yesterday.

Meme discussion aside, I kind of agree – it is in his personality to be on top of every little thing including this. But that would also assume that this is an oversight, or laziness on Apple's part. It's very possible this could be on purpose too.

Sure it would have. and did.

They can't really start work on the new ads until the product releases otherwise it would leak out either from the ad company, the billboard owners or both. Even just that a contract ends on X date could be seen as a sign that something is coming out around then. these things can't be made overnight much less made and put up

and the freaking iPad hasn't been out a full month yet.

Now if these ads are still up in 3 months you might have something to comment on but in less than a month, not really.

No biggie. In the Microsoft computing world, most people are still running Windows XP.

Well they are still selling iPad 2's, so I don't see why they wouldn't advertise it.. Not to mention many people haven't jumped on tablets because of pricing.. At $399 I think It's pretty good deal, and might be enticing to budget conscious people..

I could almost see a conversation about it.
Boating into Miami, seeing the banner by the Heat Center (whatever it might be called) and hear someone say "iPad 2...I thought a new iPad came out?" "Yes a new one did come out but they're still selling the iPad2...it is $100 cheaper" "really? I might get one now"

sure, boating into Miami you might already have the $$ to buy multiple iPads, new and old, but you get the idea.

Yeah, I mean, it's not like they cleared the iPad 2 off their shelves. They still sell it and their iPad accessories are dominated by those that fit it, so I don't see why they should rush advertising The New iPad.

Besides, in a couple of months, you won't be able to escape New iPad billboards, so, you know ... time wasted. Move on.
