They should talk to Thermador that sells an induction cooktop where you can put your magnetic pots anywhere on the cooktop and if you move it around, it remembers which pot was set at a particular temperature. That’s the kind of dynamic approach to charging that Apple is looking for.

Apple is continuing to work on a future wireless charger that would function similarly to the now-abandoned AirPower, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

airpower-airpods.jpg

In a report outlining Apple's wireless charging ambitions, Gurman says that Apple is "still exploring" a wireless charger that would charge multiple devices like an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once.

Apple first announced the AirPower in September 2017 alongside the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X, and said that the charging product would launch sometime in 2018. No AirPower materialized in 2018 and after months of rumors of development issues, Apple canceled the project in March 2019.

The AirPower failed because Apple engineers were unable to solve multiple bugs affecting the device, including interference problems and issues with overheating. In 2020 alongside the iPhone 12, Apple instead unveiled MagSafe, a magnetic wireless charging alternative.

Since the AirPower was canceled, there have been persistent rumors that Apple is still working on some kind of charging mat, but most have been nebulous. Gurman's report is the clearest hint we've had yet that some kind of AirPower-like device could still come out in the future.

In addition to a wireless charger that's similar to the AirPower, Apple is also said to be "internally investigating" alternative wireless charging methods that can work over greater distances. Work on long range charging is in the early stages, though, and it's likely to be several years before we see any kind of new long-range wireless charging technology from Apple.

On the subject of charging, is anybody as honked off as I am that Apple has zero interest in bringing wireless charging to the iPad? Time was when that was possible, all you had to do was buy one of those cheap little Qi cards from Amazon and you were good to go. But since Apple decided we all need styli and pens that could be charged from the iPad, and since that required magnetism, they had to beef up their shielding and those little guys don't work any more. Except for the iPad Mini, and I gather even that is going to become stylus-friendly. I'm not saying Apple ought to walk away from the stylus/pen models, far from it! But couldn't they market just ONE full-sized iPad capable of recharging? If not, I'm sticking to the Mini I already have. This strikes me as yet another of Apple's paternalistic "we know what's good for you better than you do" decisions.

Of course they are, at this rate though we’re likely to see a car charging mat where u park it over the mat to charge, no more plugging in, maybe someone didn’t get the memo it was only for the phone/pods/watch!🙄

The issue for me, I often need charging while using the IOS device. Like right now. Battery on the iPad at warning. Just reached over, plugged in and I am still writing. Same with my MacBook. Not sure air charging solving anything as shown in the article. A magnetic air charger that works the same as the lightening cable, fully useable while charging, could work. As shown not sure I would want it.

Why wait on Apple? I bought a Nomad charging pad that does the same thing. Sure you’ve got to pay extra for the Apple Watch charger component that connects to the back of the charging pad and use your own charging coil and cord so you have to plug in two power cords instead of one but it works and works well for me.

I can charge my Apple Watch, iPhone, AirPods and AirPods Pro on a single charging pad overnight. It runs a bit warm sometimes but I wouldn’t call it hot nor warm enough to damage a device and it only charges at 18W in total which I think gets split among the devices on the charging pad portion (again you’re bringing your own Apple Watch charger) but if your looking for something that can charge up to 5 devices it does the trick.

Apple fails to deliver on AirPower - gets raked over the coals for it.

Google has shuttered numerous services - met with a collective shrug of indifference. Whatever happened to that automated call-answering service (Duplex or something) that received so much fanfare here again?

Double standards much?
I dont follow Google, so why would I comment about something I know nothing about. I assume same goes for a lot of people on this forum..

Maybe you will have more success voicing your double standard point on the google forums? Idk

Why? When they are not the ones whining over the lack of AirPower?

Or you learn to look for the charging icon after placing the device down. I have never had that fail. Charging icon, good to go. No charging icon, move the device. Repeat until good to go. beats waking up in the morning not good to go. just saying.
Yeah, I know its my fault, but wireless charging should be as easy as "drop this thing somewhere on this mat, and it will charge", not "precisely position your phone on this exact spot until the charging icon appears". The wireless charging already has two important inconveniences that are: it is the charging speed, and the fact it may not work with your preferred case. If you add another inconvenience such as the risk of misplacing the device and having your device at 1% battery when you wake up in the morning, its really not worth it IMO. I continue using it because I hate cables sticking out of the wall, but the experience for me is far from perfect. The technology should be improved.

I love the airpower fiasco. Apple can developed the self-proclaimed fast chip in the universe but can't figure out a wireless charging pad for 3 years? Come'on. REALLY?

They had me at Long Range Wireless Charging.

Which is obviously the future (Barring if the FCC discovers such technology causes everything-cancer and/or shrinkage of individual's unspeakables). Imagine, never needing to even think about charging your device beyond stepping out of the house, or maybe even beyond. Desktop computers totally liberated from it's power cord. A gen-yew-wine wireless experience from stem to stern.

"One gets used to the semi-frequent ear bleeds and strange blue glow in the air."

Truth is, Apple has lost all innovation. There is absolutely nothing worth delaying this. The eventual end product will be like o...k.... “we waiting this long because?”
It will be a copy and paste of what has already been out there for years.

True. your first sentence is so true.

I suspect it won’t be a charger at all but a smart dough mixer for the kitchen. I have one but I have thought sometimes it could be smarter and identify the type of dough, adjusting speed and time accordingly and sending a notification to my phone when it’s ready.

Anyway, based on my current struggles I think that’s what Apple is doing, rather than what would be logical for them to be doing and that the insider is telling us they are doing.

you mean a single charging device involving Macbooks, iPhone, and watch *isn't* logical?

your "current struggles" is absolutely spot on. 😂

Well, Apple's got 100 years of technological advancements over Nikola Tesla... so - Maybe?

However...

I have given up on AirPower. It's like the girl you had a crush in school. You finally get the nerve to ask her out and she gives a noncommittal answer. You wait and wait for her to make up her mind and the next thing you know, she transfers to another school never to be seen or her from again. There are other interested girls.

I am also not into long range fry your insides charging.

Wireless RF deteriorate at long distances... What makes this better indoors? RF is still "Radio Frequency"

I do like Apple's 'go for gold'... They never give up.. no matter how much you say 'no'

As a company that claims to be green, I hope they are trying to find a wireless charging solution that doesn’t waste MASSIVE amounts of energy just to provide a kind-of-cool looking feature.
