If it can hold out, the Mac'll be back center stage when margins on iPhones and iPads get squeezed to practically nothing. People still need workstations to create all that content people veiw on their iOS Devices. And for independant/small shop creatives, Macs are still the tool of choice.

I hope they plan on continuing to actually make computers...

omg. Really? There is no rule that says computer must be housed in big clunk box with vents and fans and a hundred cables coming out of the back.

iPad is computer. In a few years will just have ipad or iphone that connects to external display and keyboard and will kick current Mac Pro's a$$. (mostly b/c current Mac Pro was last updated during the real estate bubble).

With Mac at only 10% of revenue and PC sales declining, it might be time for the Mac-Midi expandable, single chip 4 core i7 Mac. And a stackable external enclosure. If all they do is cannibalize PC sales, it would be a winner. As you know all Macs run Windows!

Blade MacPro too.

We have long since needed a Mac that could replace all the utility purposes commodity PC's are installed into. Premium price and quality okay! TCOO is very low. It might need a parallel and serial port option! Okay if it immediately converts to the internal USB/PCIe bus. :D

Rocketman

Declining seems slightly disingenuous in this context. You pointed to a percentage basis where other growth has outpaced hardware sales of the Mac. It doesn't mean growth has come to a halt on the Mac.

I sincerely hope you are kidding.

Awesome. No matter what people say about iOS being dull or iPhone not innovating enough, the Mac is kicking ass comparing to windows.

Yes, but it's mostly because of Microsoft's goofs. Apple's latest moves have been negative but not as bad as Microsoft's.

No.

For the billionth time, some people's needs simply can't be met by an iPad. Hell, some people's needs can't be fully met by a GUI-based OS like OS X. I know I still delve into the terminal from time to time.

Apple could double their Mac sales if only they would make a "normal" computer. Something bigger then a Mini where you can put disk drives inside and maybe upgrade some parts.

I don't like their current line where the only upgrade path is to toss out the entire system. The imac especially where you have to toss out a good LCD monitor to get a newer CPU chip

Apple,

That's fantastic, now where are the Pro's? Those numbers could have doubled considering the demand from large graphic/media business' with aging equipment.

Love,

Jeff

From reports I've seen on MR,the chips apple plans to use are not ready until later this year. Why is it so hard for you people to understand that?Apple can only release what Intel makes. If they used current Intel chips everyone would say"We waited two years for THIS??Apple is doomed!!!"Supposedly won't be much longer,so take heart!

The little skinny retina notebooks have better benchmarks than old big clunk mac pro for most meaningful parameters.

Do the math.

Define"few years".

Here are a couple of benchmarks. My Mac Pro has 16TB of internal HD space. How much storage is available on a little skinny retina notebook?

Here is another. My Mac Pro has 24GB RAM. That is a little low for a Mac Pro but how does that compare to the RAM available on a little skinny retina notebook?

And one more; Blu-ray offers the highest quality audio and video available today. Therefore my Mac Pro has a Blu-ray burner. How does that compare to a little skinny retina notebook's optical drive?

Awe shucks, one more. I use external eSATA boxes for backup. How many eSATA connections are on a little skinny retina notebook?

You might say "totally different computers for totally different users". You would be correct but the point is if you need a real, configurable desktop computer Apple has been a little shy in that department for awhile. There is a whole lot more to computers than Geekbench numbers.

It is hard to understand because Intel is releasing new chips every year (and a lot of them) and yet, according to you, Apple decided to skip three chip generations (a bit of exaggeration) and wait for the third one. What this means is that while PC users have been enjoying fresh hardware, Mac Pro users have been using outdated hardware for a while now.

So then why even use a Mac Pro? Don't need a Mac Pro for iOS development, Final Cut X is no longer the best video software...

What is benefit of using a Mac Pro vs a Linux or Windows machine? Mac Pro never has support for the best graphics cards.

Just an honest question. Never understood why a Mac Pro would be the choice for true power users...

:apple:

...and getting a choice of graphics cards that other Intel-based systems vendors call "entry-level". (For example, Dell categorizes the lower 1 GiB ATI "FirePro" as "entry-level", and Apple ships the Radeon consumer cards.... Dell has Quadro BTO options that cost more than the Apple Pro.)

You mean you can't do everything with Chrome or a web browser? You actually need real software tools and a development platform?! :D
