Given that Apple can't source enough SSD drives that are exactly the same, what do you suggest Apple does?

If you read my post, you will see what I suggested. Price differences for higher/lower quality components. They do it with CPU's. For example an Intel model X 1ghz vs 1.1ghz chip is exactly the same chip, only one came out better quality in tests and so is clocked at the higher rate. I pay more money for a faster CPU that is in fact exactly the same chip as the cheaper one! Why can I not pay more for the faster SSD that is built by a completely different company? Supply and demand can solve the problem of "What does Apple do if they can't source enough of the same SSD's".

To be honest I don't care what my Air will have. Random read/writes is more important to me and SSD benchmarking is complex. But if components are going to have significantly different performances, there should be a choice made at purchase time for higher costs for less supply. I'm not saying they are doing anything illegal at all, but I personally would be happier if it was done that way.

Each to their own.

phew, it's Samsung

I checked yesterday and it's Samsung on my 13" MBA. Ran same test - circa 250MB read/write.
I'm waiting for 11" to arrive and will check it out too...

Quick swap at the local Apple Store

I ordered my Macbook Air 13" base model through the online Apple store the day it was released. To my dissappointment, I ended up receiving the slower Toshiba drive. The slower speed is noticeable if you are using apps that access the drive while its backing up (Time Machine) etc. I took it to the local Apple store (roughly 20mi away) and they exchanged systems for me although they could not guarantee that the exchanged unit would have the Samsung SSD in it. I went ahead and exchanged the computer considering all there floor models had the Samsung SSD and I already made the drive to the Apple store. I ended up receiving the Samsung SSD. I'm very impressed with Apple's customer support as a new Apple convert. The new MBA runs noticeably smoother and should help later on down the road with resale value if I should chose to do so. There will always be someone for whom this would matter to if I were to resell it to. To each his own.

Sorry, I didn't read the whole tread. I was wondering how this relates to the iMac. Got my new iMac 3,4 GHz i7 full options today and I have the TS256C SSD disk in there. I did a disk speed test (with Disk Speed from Blackmagic) and the numbers are 180/210. Is there anyone out there with the same iMac but an Samsung SSD who can do the test? I'm curious!

Doesn't really matter to me

First, let me say I bought a 11" MBA at the 5th Ave. store in NYC. It came with the Samsung drive. Would I be upset if it came with the Toshiba drive? Not at all. For what I use it for either one would be just fine.

YOU KNOW the Apple solution to this will be to issue a software fix in the OS that reduces the Samsung drive speed to match the Toshiba.

well, I just got my maxed out 13" i7 with a 256 Samsung drive. Thank god, I woulda be pissed had it been a toshiba.

No, if you had your way, Apple would give everyone the slower drive, at identical cost.

What? "No" yourself! :D Clearly, if I had my way, it would be exactly as I stated, quite clearly: that "if Apple can't source enough of the better SSDs they should knock $50 off the worse one or something, not just charge the same and hope no-one notices."

Because, as I would have thought was obvious, that would be 'my way'! What you suggest would not be 'my way' but some other random state of affairs I had nothing to do with suggesting.

I don't think so because the majority of buyers of the MacBook Air probably do not care.

13" Samsung SSD

Well I just bought the new Macbook Air 13" Base model (The 1300$ one) and i was checking what you said on the video and it turns out that it comes with the faster SSDs

I bought the 13"/1.8ghz/256GB SSD at a retail store. Unfortunately it came with the "slower" Toshiba SSD. I ran various benchmarks to confirm the slower disk performance numbers. Although I realize some have said it makes no difference it did to me to I took it to the store and they allowed me to exchange it. Unfortunately the exchange I got was also with the Toshiba SSD.

One exchange it all I was allowed and so my only option was to return it which is what I did.

MBA 13" - i7 - SM256C

Thanks for a great tip.

Fortunately, I have the Samsung 256 drive in my new MBA 13" laptop.

Is there still a chance I could get a Toshiba SSD instead of a Samsung in my 11inch Air?

Apple is Suing Samsung (for Slavish theft) and yet they use their SSDs in some Airs...strange, very strange
