Apple is really fallen behind..

AirPods require very little wattage to charge. I’m a huge apple fan and am 15 years in to the Apple ecosystem, but this just seems strange. Android phones have had this feature for years. It wouldn’t take much for iPhone to charge AirPods at a watt or two. That wouldn’t produce much heat and require much efficiency. Seems like it could be done now pretty easily. It could always be tweaked and improved.

For reference Battery Capacity:

If one were to charge fully, it would eat away 1/5 to 1/4 of the phones battery capacity depending on the model and then you still have to account for charging efficiency. I understand why Apple hasn't enabled it, its got a lot to do with the overall iPhone experience and people's lack of understanding where energy is lost beyond just charging the AirPods for example from your iPhone and as iPhone battery it self degrades, it has a lower capacity to hold charge.....now you have a recipe for PR disaster.....

It’s definitely not, I use it all the time on my S21 Ultra to charge my Buds Pro.
Last thing I would want to do is suck juice out of my phone to charge my earbuds.I just make sure that my earbuds are fully charged before I set out.Not hard to do.

It’s not a basic feature,it’s a gimmick.
No its not, it allows us to truly to go one cable only. Even with a USB-C iPhone I still need to have that damn watch charger. This eliminates that. I can plug the usb-c cable into the phone and use the phone to charge the watch.

That’s not the point of the feature. The feature is for charging something that is fully capable of being charged by one device with another. Maybe you don’t need to charge it all the way up. Maybe you got caught in an unexpected situation and you just need a couple of hours of use. Or the convenience of having one cable to plug into your phone, and the lay it face down and top up the AirPods at the same time. That would be phenomenal for traveling. There are many scenarios where this feature would provide a benefit to the user.

Depends how much of a geek you are.
