Apple Still Working to Perfect Wireless Charging Technology for 'iPhone 8'

Or iphone has battery, but no other features than others.
Useability of OS won't cut forever...
I agree! Samsung it's about to release next year the new Galaxies with 10 nm processors, 8 GB RAM and probably LPDDR5, with a light OS like Android..the Samsung hardware would laugh at it

I'd bet my bottom dollar that this'll be in the 2018 model. 2017 one is going to be the 7S with full waterproofing.
I've seen several people make that request... full waterproofing. What exactly are you asking? A higher level of water resistance? That would be nice. There will never be a 100% waterproof phone. It's always going to be a level of water resistance. Just like watches. Simplest reason: waterproof implies legal liability.

Except Samsung Exynos 8890 CPUs, If LG decided to use the Apple Ax CPUs on one of their smartphones running android, the performance will be...well you know the resto_O
I think we do know the rest. The Ax series on Android would most likely perform just like Samsung's Exynos and Qualcomm's Snapdragon. Apple's software/hardware integration can't be understated. It contributes to the performance of the Ax series.

Wireless charging would be nice for me so I can eliminate the cords at my bedside that the cats like to chew on. :p
There will still be at least one cord for your cats to chew on. In the end you still have to plug in the charger somewhere to power it up. I have a cat so I know what you mean.

Make iPhone 8 ceramic glass, Apple. Hide the ugly protruding cameras, hide the ugly antenna bands, perfect for wireless charging (finally and all so simple!) Talk to your friends at Corning, Apple, and get it done!

https://www.corning.com/worldwide/e...-glass-and-glass-ceramics/glass-ceramics.html

Ceramic Apple Watch -- "Sleek, light and extremely durable, ceramic is more than four times as hard as stainless steel — with a pearly, lustrous finish that won’t scratch or tarnish."

An how about ceramic glass iPhone 2017?? 4-inch, 4.7-inch, 5.5-inch, ceramic glass in 2017!!!

Me thinks so, me so excited!

And the patent:

I think we get. You want GT Advance to make sapphire.:p:D

I'm unsure what perfecting it needs as I've never owned a device that could take advantage of it.

Well you just answered your own question. Apple wants to make sure that it would be more advantageous to use wireless charging that's why they are trying to perfect it (well their version of perfection). Right now wireless charging requires you to place your device on something in order to charge. The current commercial wireless chargers out there can't charge your device once you pick it up, it has to be put back to resume charging again. I'm guessing Apple wants to try to get devices charging wirelessly as you're using it i.e. enter a room and it starts charging.

Wireless charging would be nice for me so I can eliminate the cords at my bedside that the cats like to chew on. :p
I think the wireless charging station will still have a cord for your cat. :D

I just hope we don't have to talk about the charging puck for the phone and the watch. Maybe a brick for the phone. :D

Id like to see true wireless charging. Imagine not having to rest your phone on a pad. Imagine walking around using it while its charging. Now that would be impressive.

And adding Qi charging now in the interim would be a simple affair if they wanted to. Because others have added it and more to their devices than the iPhone 7 currently has.

More likely Apple want to create another proprietary system that requires Apple specific hardware instead of adding a widespread universal solution. Because they are like that.

Alternatively they could just be holding back on a wireless charging solution so the next iPhone has something to sell. When feature additions are thin on the ground Apple have a long history or restricting their use in devices to make an "upgrade" an intentional and unique selling point, even when it's just a minor addition.

But you won't. Because you will still have cords connecting the "charger" just like now. Wireless does not eliminate a cord- it just rearranged the cord and makes using the phone while charging impossible. It's a regressive technology that has wow factor but is not useful. The kind of thing Apple used to shun but now embraces.

This will be welcomed by me, they are taking baby steps towards it with the watch and headphones, once the phone jumps on board it will be cool to see if they figure out how to charge multiple devices at once efficiently, or have some kind of priority charge setting.

The poster above is probably correct. They'll be working on yet another proprietary system. Because $$$

Typical Apple Consumer: "OMG it has wireless charging, that's so innovative"

"Oh but you have to buy a separate charger for $150"

"But it's so revolutionary it's worth it"

Meanwhile, anybody with a basic understanding of the world realises this sh*t has been around for years.

It's hard to believe it's taking Apple this long for this feature. Working on "perfecting" it sounds like spin. I can imagine it's more about the fact that it would add SOME thickness to the phone ;)
Apple is dragging it's feet.

I've been enjoying wireless charging for years on my Android phones.

Before switching to iPhone, I used and loved Palm phones. The inductive charging on the Palm Pre, and later on the Palm Pixi, was very well done. I have played around with the Samsung system, and it is not as good. Palm's was the best.

I could toss my phone from a few feet away towards the charging puck, and it would land on the puck perfectly and orient itself correctly. The puck and phone had 4 pretty strong alignment magnets that ensured it was always oriented and aligned corrected. It was strong enough to use in a car without anything else holding the phone. Man I miss that feature...

A charging mat is a gimmick, not real wireless charging IMO.

Yes but magnetic inductive charging is a way to eliminate all ports on the iPhone. And this is a step toward true contactless wireless charging, but an inductive connection will always be necessary for data transfer, and until BT wireless audio is at the same quality level as wired audio, a high quality headphone connection.

After seeing that "scratch proof" white ceramic Apple Watch Series 2.... I'm sold!!!!
Would LOVE the options on my next iPhone to be Jet Black & Pearl White- both glossy as hell.

It'll be nice when this is implemented in the iPhone. Had a Nokia 920 that had it and it was very nice to use.

Doing it through a metallic case always seemed like a challenge, but ceramic as SMACRUMAN has pointed out or Gorilla Glass would probably work just fine. Just have to hope Apple uses the standard that all this wireless charging tech (already in place, in cars etc.) is using so it'll really be convenient - this would be the part I'd be afraid Apple will fall down on with their own incompatible, better way. Regardless it'll be nice if they do it.

This may seem a bit far-fetched but hear me out...
I wonder if an adapter via smart connector to 3.5mm would even be feasible?
God, I hope so!
I'm in the camp that welcome changes such as the slimming/waterproofing of the iPhone & don't mind using an adapter whatsoever; but also would never consider replacing my carefully curated headphone collection with any "flash in the pan" connector (like lighting or USB-C; obviously those standards have a shelf life of less than a decade...). Yup, I buy quality audio equipment to LAST... hopefully a lifetime. I'm a "adapter until the wheels fall off" kinda guy.
