It is simple, if you want to sell at a market you follow their rules and regulations. Just make better cars that people want to buy, and produce foot that is healthy and doesn't generate generations of fat unhealthy people and the sales will follow. Bullying your way in, isn't going to work as the consumers still won't buy it.

We do not know. I think last time I was in EuropeI met lots of people who really liked the old kitchy American cars with velour covered comfy seats etc. They would love to own such vehicles - maybe even more because they are probably outlawed by TUV test results. I understand what you are saying, and I do not know why the US makers could not comply - sounds like poor management. Yeah, so where does that really leave us? Now we have pressure for opening up the market despite the possibly valid reasons for basically outlawing American automobiles. It even trickles down to attacking American companies like Apple and make EU cash grabs for USB-C and Monopolies that come about from American innovation. It's like another form of jealousy - that's how we can interpret it. Right or Wrong, America is always right. :)

"Suddenly 75 countries are calling to negotiate on things they would have Poo-Poohed for months and years on previously."

Sorry, no, factually incorrect. The EU offered zero for zero back in February. Trump didn't want to know.

The simple fact is that on April 2nd the US instigated tariffs on virtually every country in the world unilaterally. Before that there was nothing to negotiate, as there were no tariffs. Countries operated inside WTO rules. Trump with his obsession with tariffs decided to plough ahead with an economically nonsensical plan.

Yesterday the bond markets came close to the point of breakdown. The US Government was on the verge of not being able to borrow. Hence the sudden change of direction.

All of these points are incontrovertible and easily researched with a modicum of effort. You probably won't find them on Fox News or any other propaganda outlets for this mad regime.

Of course they'll spin this (lie, in plain English) as a great victory but the reality is the US just committed itself to a pointless act of economic self harm and stopped when the harm was about to become serious.

That said, the ridiculous tariffs on China are still in effect and likely to cause serious harm to one group - the US consumer.

Zero for Zero - does that mean the EU will drop the VAT?

You see, Zero for Zero looks good on paper, but the VAT is a disincentive for EU citizens to buy things. Americans can view the VAT in the realm of tariffs/taxes/subsidies.

I think Trump is asking for more of a review of the Zero for Zero. A new equalization with some fresh ignorant American viewpoints weighing in! :). Get ready to accept it.

And the adults in the room know that just not true 🤷‍♂️ And sure there are a handful of people who like those old cars, and want to compensate for something with oversized trucks. That is why there was some import businesses. Generally it’s a small and particular demographic. Not the standard.

And no it’s not attacking American companies, it’s pro consumer. Having standards is a good thing.

Jeez, I do wonder how some people manage to breathe by themselves. Sales tax is indiscriminate. 🤷‍♂️ It has nothing to do with the origin of the goods. You really got to stop listening to that fake tan orange man. Really not a good source of information.

Sure - I can see that standards are good.

So What?

America wants to sell in the EU market, and I guess they are too lazy to fix their product designs, but still want to sell :)

"Such insight. This kind of biased opinion polarizes people"….oops…sorry…using your own words here.
But then again…."so what?"

Indeed, the ignorance/arrogance on display is staggering. “Drop the VAT” (which European companies also have to deal with), or “just change make the tests less strict so we can sell our kiddie killer SUVs that hardly fit in European parking spots”, “why don’t you buy our chlorine chicken?” American brand cars are not unpopular: eg Ford Fiestas sell pretty well. And how is the EU making money on forcing USB-C?

Even if he did crash it on purpose, anyone can cash in on that, not just "his friends". Anyone with a brain knows to buy stock up when it drops like this. You act like it was some secret mission that none of us idiot, common people could take advantage of.
He did crash it on purpose. Now the New York AG is investigating trump officials for insider trading on the day before he delayed the tariffs. And you know they all had advance notice. He even tweeted it: "Now is a great time to buy stocks!" also the day before. And yet you follow that "what you see and hear is not what's happening" BS he tells you to believe. I suggest you start to follow the evidence of your eyes and ears, because what you see and hear IS what's really happening. Not what he's telling you is happening.

That was a good piece... thoughtful, detailed and logical...written by a real businessman, not a con artist blowhard bully selling his snake oil, which is what Trump is doing here with his ill conceived tariffs and is in fact the ONLY thing Trump knows how to do.

The viewpoint of a Shanghai businessman...

Damn right. China has been remarkably tolerant of Trump's BS. Especially in since they're holding the cards here. More than one. Sure, it will cut into their sales of electronics. but how long do you think before America's farmers revolt when they can't sell soybeans and corn to their biggest customer? And China can get agricultural products from any number of countries. But we can't get electronics at home or anywhere else but China. Think that over! That's a huge percentage of Trump's base, and neither he nor his servile GOP congresspeople can afford to lose their votes.

There's another factor at play as well: China owns about 40% of America's debt, and is the main customer for those Bills, Notes and Bonds we need to finance the interest on our national debt. Imagine what would happen if they banned every entity in China from buying US treasuries. And then started unwinding what they hold as it matures, rather than rolling it into new purchases. That would created a hole in our budget that would affect every American. Even the billionaire class. Interest rates would double or triple, and our AAA credit rating, na na hey hey kiss it goodbye.

China actually only own about $800bn of the US National Debt, which is just over 10% of the amount ($7tn) held by foreign governments. The total national debt is well over $35tn and growing.

It's complete irrelevant if they knew ahead of time. They weren't buying stocks up until it crashed. The exact same time any of us could have done the same. As far as selling, it's the same. People knew he was going to do tariffs months and months before he got reelected.

LOL... Trump also gave them advance warning before he dropped the tariff bomb so they knew ahead of time to sell at the high. That's how insider trading works.

Again, we ALL knew it was coming. It was a surprise to literally no one that even remotely paid attention.

So, what do you think…did he know before? Or do you actually think he didn’t know? I know you cannot proof anything, but I don’t ask for proof. I ask for your opinion. The duck test could help!

Now, IF he knew ahead of time, then that means he’s guilty of insider trading.
And that…is illegal. Simple as that.
I think it’s very relevant. Except ofcourse to people who don’t mind any criminal behaviour.

In my opinion, HE and his closest “friends” knew. He didn’t just have to believe something someone said.
That’s a difference…..knowing by actually manipulating the market, or believing someone who said so.

As Mark Twain put it, "It's infinitely easier to fool someone than to convince them they've been fooled."

No one has been fooled. He literally made his entire campaign on deportations and trying to get rid of income taxes and replacing them with tariffs. It was an out in the open plan before he even became president. Literally everyone knew this. lol.

:) You seem to nicely confirm the point @victorvictoria made. So it was in the open, and people still voted, look what is happening, and yet look at the response! ;)

It’s indeed very difficult to convince someone that he has been fooled into thinking this is the best policy for the country. Even when all signs are red.
