Said this long time ago. Stockpiling using old unsold parts to make a new product to get rid of inventory. Glad Macrumors reported this.

If it were glass then it wouldn’t be able to fold.

It is common for automotive suppliers to do run at rate on production equipment and tools ca 1 year before serial production.

This allows for final production sample warrant testing and sign offs well in advance of serial production.

Also the production of large quantities of pre production evaluation units are used to look for final tweakable bugs before production.

Wider than an iPhone Max when folded, and smaller than an iPad mini when open? It sounds like the worst of both worlds.

Sounds like the best of both worlds to me, I’ve never been close to having the width be a problem with the Pro Max phones but the height is more annoying.

The tall and skinny form factor of slabphones makes sense if you cannot fold it out for a bigger screen since that is close to the format of videos, but for a foldable you can have an outside display that is better suited for other tasks.

Whenever I see folding modern phones, my first question is… “But why?

Folding an all-glass phone in half has always been a questionable use case for me. What benefit is there to the user? Sure, you get a phone with half the footprint, but twice the thickness. Pocketability? Forget it. Even with two iPhone Airs joined with a hinge, that's more than I want to stick in my pocket, and more than I want to use on a daily basis. Bending fatigue will destroy the screen and hinge, unless Apple is going to make it two separate displays with a seamless hinge between them.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is 8.9mm when folded. An IPhone 16 Pro Max is 8.3mm.

I support all iPhone form factors.

Different users have different preferences and needs.

I'd like to see even more form factor options and sizes!

I think it's funny how Apple keeps flailing trying to market and sell a different form factor of the iPhone. Maybe they want mini! No, maybe they want extra big? No, maybe they want extra thin? No... maybe they want one that folds in half?

Haha, this is a hilarious comment if its stupidity was intentional.
We will see. But every indicator shows it is going to flop. Price, use cases, points of failure etc. Even the competition struggles to gain market share. What is it? Like 2% market share after 6 years. Thats bad. It will have the same fate as the VP.

If it works just fine without it they probably first need to get sued into allowing people removing what looks like packaging.
No. They say it because at first people removed it and it damaged the screen or the screen got damaged easily after a while. You should not remove it. Fold phones are fragile.

You’re framing it wrong. A foldable isn’t about adding new features it’s about changing the context of how you use your phone. A Pro Max may do everything, but not comfortably on a 6” screen. A foldable gives you pocketable tablet space for multitasking, media, docs, gaming, and travel without carrying a bag or a second device.

Early pricing and gen 1 quirks are normal OLED, 120Hz, titanium, 1TB, all started as premiums too. Once durability and cost mature, convenience wins. Foldables don’t need more specs than a Pro Max they just need to be more usable in more situations. That’s the value.
I don't buy the media argument. Videos are same size as a pro max with black bezels on top and bottom. And there is probably nobody who is going to use it for work to do docs, power points etc.

Very excited to see the foldable from Apple. Would like to see some form of telephoto lens. Also wish the screen, both external and internal are big, at least like the Z Fold. Recent rumors point to a small screen. Of course, the aspect ratio is important and waiting to hear more on it. Don’t think there will be color choices. Probably only black and white.

Wasn't Apple so proud that it takes just five days from production of an iPhone to its sale? Stockpiling one year ahead means a lot of storage.

However Apple might put that burden on its suppliers. They have to store those parts and might only get paid when the iPhone is assembled. Then those five days start.

I would prefer a Touch ID on the side of the phone to Face ID. A folding phone isn't for me, but I see where some people would want it. Same way some people (like me) would prefer Touch ID to Face ID.

If they can put Touch ID in this thing, they can put it in the "flagship" phone".

I think the premium phone should have both really. I do miss Face ID on the iPad mini and it's quite awkward to do the touch ID sometimes, but hen it's a device you hold in multiple orientations so the button keeps moving position - on an iPhone it'd always be on the right - I mean the camera button would be an ideal place - even more so than "under screen" that they apparently keep working on.

But yeah the iPad mini one does work perfectly well so i've no idea why they haven't implemented it as well.

I agree that FaceID is a biggie - but you know what, i'd love if the power button the iPhone XX Pro had a touch ID built in my like the iPad mini just for times i'm not looking directly at my phone, like when my face is half on the pillow etc. I find mself entering the pin more times than is resonable.
Touch ID isn’t as good though. I often need to enter the code on my iPhone SE and on my MacBook as well because there were multiple failed unlocks in a row. It’s enough if my hands aren’t perfectly dry after I just washed them and there is a bit of moisture left. But if they aren’t perfectly clean when I’m doing yard work it will fail every single time as well. So to me Touch ID is borderline unusable on an iPhone I use when I’m out and about. If they leave Face ID in however I wouldn’t mind an additional biometric sensor.
