The whole jailbreak theme has reminded me that Apple should really get some themes/dynamic wallpapers going. OK maybe "themes" would be very un-Apple, but I should at least be able to get some kind of subtle rain effect on my wallpaper or something.

They used to put a modicum of effort on their static, dynamic and live wallpapers. They used to have some of the best aerial and macro shots around during iOS 7-10. That live goldfish that debuted with 3D Touch was amazing. I don't get why they stopped putting any effort –the lava lamp blobs, funeral flowers and flat rainbows they have right now are about as compelling as stock 2005 Nokia backgrounds.

They could simply crowdsource some of the best #shotoniPhone finalist shots, and it would be a win win for both product recognition and the customers.

I don’t understand why Apple won’t just give us finer control over our devices. It would eliminate the desire to jailbreak for a lot of jailbreakers. They simply wouldn’t need to.

simple. too many downsides for not a lot of upsides for most users.
jailbreaking community has shrunk substantially over the years anyways.

Is there a newer version or replacement to semi restore? I've just had a cheque through the mail and my banking app lets me take a photo of it to deposit it. My banking app (Halifax) doesn't work when jailbroken, I've tried, shadow, choicy, a-bypass, kernbypass, and liberty lite with no success. It's usually not a problem because it just use the website, but for this deposit I can only use the app. I have my old 8+ on 13.5 and jailbroken but I don't want to have to restore it to 13.5.1 just for this cheque, even though I have an 11 as my main phone.

I believe we should go back to what Steve Jobs envisioned of Apple products. Steve basically wanted to make computers into appliances, so "mere mortals" can use it easily. Thus the focus of ease-of-use, everything being integrated, etc. I mean we don't really think of customizing the display color of our microwaves. Considering how Steve was so particular in the tiny details, I doubt we will see any sort of deep customizations for iOS. It's just the way Apple is.

Heck, imo it's already a miracle that 3rd party keyboards are allowed. :D

Either way, the world has changed, and Steve Jobs words are not bibles. Or frankly, nothing can last forever, even for his words. Plus, going too deep to please “mere mortals” will displease everyone who wants to do “a little bit more” with their gadgets. Smartphone is not an appliance after all.

My best guess is allowing customisation is against apples “we know much better than you do” mindset. Imagine those professors instead of doing research, they appear on TV news bashing general public and insult them with similar mindset.

iOS is designed for dumb people who don’t care or don’t know much about computer and just want to get the job done. Kinda works, but with no ability to fall back iOS updates and upgrades once Apple ****s up, everyone gets screwed. Many people don’t like it, but this is apple.

PS: don’t call that tiny 7 days grace period “fallback feature”.

Yeah, and apples solution is using an enterprise tool that is difficult to access. So much about this bs protecting privacy narrative.
Not to mention that VPN is not only needed by enterprises. It is also used by various reasons.

I don't understand why people are still using iphones. There are so many better options now without the restrictions Apple places on their phones. And at such an extravagant cost. Holy crap why would anyone spend double for a phone with such tight restrictions?

The "walled garden" approach will eventually be Apple's undoing. There is very clear demand for an ability to innovate and customize user experience. When a software company comes along that can achieve this while still matching Apple's design philosophy, they will have no problem pulling customers away.

Jeez, it’s like I stepped back to 2012. Android is quickly becoming a walled garden too- Google is by the year making it harder to customize, install non-play store apps, decreasing the reward for rooting (SafetyNet check failures), and in general making Android more Apple-like. Apple’s model has become _the_ model that other manufacturers are trying to follow. Outside of enthusiasts most people like or at least tolerate this model too.

I use the functionality built into Little11. Same for Splitview, Side-by-side, and iPad Dock.

It’s not that easy (see Palm’s webOS failure). It’s the combination of design philosophy, ecosystem, and devices working together that make people stay with Apple.

Most people don’t want a computer; they want an appliance. They want some customization but really just want to mostly communicate with their family and friends while getting work done (for personal or their job).

The primary difference is that Apple prevents customization, while Android is designed around it. Furthermore, Android doesn't restrict side-loading apps, but the option must simply be enabled. I'd say that's a huge difference between platforms.

The option is becoming harder to find, and now Play Protect will auto-remove apps it thinks you should not have installed, side loaded or not. Now Google has a program called Advanced Protection which prevents all sideloading except in developer cases (which is akin to what iOS allows). It is not rolled out to general users but you can see the writing on the wall.

Here is the hint.

They all run android.

The question becomes, what restrictions matter to you that I believe make the phone easier / better to operate.

It can enable things like resigning sideloaded apps automatically, adding the X series UI gestures to TouchID iPhones, and importing music into the Music app. Of course there’s UI customization too. Heck, you can even enable the iPad UI on an iPhone complete with native dock, slide over, and split view. Also enabling PiP for videos. All of this without a hit to performance as it’s all native.

In the attached screenshot I’m using an iPhone 6S Plus with the Little11 tweak enabling the X series UI since I love the newer gestures, especially swiping the bar to multitask, but like TouchID. I’m getting myself used to it before I upgrade this year to the 12. I also have a ProjectFarm YouTube video in PiP. The screen borders also have rounded corners instead of it being a rectangle. I think it looks better.
Dude, you're just making my point for me. Very little gain for way too much risk and effort.

Lot of apps that Apple doesn’t want you to have. I plug my phone into my CarPlay and have my ATT TV going. I can also download torrents, use popcorntime, etc.
There are literally millions of apps. Do you think that you've searched all of them, and know that you couldn't do those things without breaking your security? What makes you think you're safe running apps that you could only run after jailbreaking?

I don't understand why you're posting on this site.
I don't understand why you think that security is a non-issue.
I don't understand why you think the iPhone cost is extravagant. Whenever I've looked at others, they've been priced at about the same, with lower performance.
But mostly, it's why you're here that I question.

Jailbreak will always be awesome option to supercharge your device. Now I have battery % instead of stupid icon, now I have CC in down right corner instead of stupid up right, now I have instant animations, instant face id unlock to home, and many many more great and useful improvements.

Outside of the CC position (who cares?) I see nothing different. I have battery %. It's a simple settings change. Instant animations? I see no delay. I have touch ID, but I've heard no complaints about face id speed. You're reaching for a reason to jailbreak, but there really aren't any.

How am I reaching? On notched iPhone you cannot see battery % without swiping.

So let me repeat my reasons:

- Number instead of battery icon
- CC down right
- Zero lag animations
- Face ID unlock to home (without swiping)

I have more...

I've already said why those are all wrong, but here's a picture showing that the first is wrong. I'm not going to detail every nit pick you claim. Let's just say that there are no killer apps for jailbreaking, and there never will be, because if there were, Apple would find a way to add the app to the ecosystem.

Oh, so you're nit picking down to specific models now? As your reason for thinking that jailbreaking is valuable? LOL!

Well, realistically speaking something being available on older models and not being there on newer ones that more people are using or will be using over time is something that certainly plays a role. It's not some sort of "reaching" or anything like that.
