I don't think anyone uses Bootcamp with a legal copy of Windows. #Bootcampgate

Hi, my name is Sebastian and I use a legal copy of Windows 7 on my rMBP and a legal copy of Windows 8 on my nMP. Now you know pf someone that uses two legal copies of Windows via Bootcamp. #anecdotalevidenceisisilly

It's funny to see how everyone thinks it's okay to run the same copy of Windows on multiple machines (PC + Mac). The Windows license allows it to run on one machine only so you can't just install your one copy on everything you own. Theft is theft, folks.

I have multiple licenses for Windows and run it on a Mac, but I must admit I really can't see why ONE person should have to purchase separate licenses. The only reason a lot of people have more than one computer is convenience, they still run the same apps etc.

I really don't see it as theft even though I do have multiple licenses.

I wonder if it was Microsoft that requested this!!
Probably a back room deal to get people to update from 7.

I haven't run boot camp for 5 or more years now.
VMware works just fine for the few programs on windows I need.

What's so bad about Windows 8? At least it actually support retina.

I think its fine. I am holding off buying my next mbp until bootcamp supports windows 10. In terms of functionality, aside from the start window its almost identical to 8.1

If I own 3 cars should I have to get 3 licenses to drive them.

Another reason I have no idea what to do when I have to replace my Macbook...

Apple keeps making the new models look more and more annoying... I hate that new trackpad as well - it doesn't click properly even on the firmest setting.

They shouldn't do that, but they should however give support to the version of Windows that is most in use.

Apple perfected the laptop by 2010 or so, but can't resist fussy changes that are diminishing the product.
will people start downgrading to get the best keyboard?

----------

Nevermind, really liking the latest builds of Windows 10.

I think--metro aside--win 8 and 10 have a wonderful minimalistic presentation. I just think osx looks rediculous (icon bar at lower screen)

Lol i still want to know what happened to Windows 9....

The story I got from a Microsoft person (at Microsoft - see where I'm from) is that one of Windows 9x (95/98) beta'd as Windows 9, so to avoid internal confusion, they went to 10.

That's right. You don't take the license plate off of one car and put it on one of the others, or when the police stop you, it will be an interesting conversation.

With that, there are all kinds of licensing situations that are at play, and Microsoft is notorious for making the licensing for companies make you need a MS Partner (I used to be one - almost got to Gold Status, but oh, well...) to figure it all out.

One good thing is Microsoft is pretty good with small businesses in getting them "green" if they're pirating, like running the MS Action Pack on their business computers and they don't actively sell MS Software as their primary business.

Anyway, self justification may get you to sleep at night, but you're not dealing with cars and such. You are having a transaction between two entities, and neither is the State, so you can work it out between the both of you, however, if you call Microsoft and tell them what you're doing, and don't take their remedy, well, good luck to you!

After using 8.1, Windows 7 already feels like a dated step backwards. Windows 7 was excellent for its time, but Windows 8.1 is stable and fast. As much as I hate to admit it, my 2011 iMac is actually faster and smoother in Windows 8.1 than Yosemite.

Just FYI- these new systems lack the BIOS CSM (compatibility module) that the older systems had for booting "legacy" operating systems. That means that you can only boot the computer via EFI (and therefore an EFI aware OS).

Unfortunately this change goes far beyond simply cutting off Windows. Pretty much any other legacy booting OS will not work on these machines. FreeDOS, Haiku, various forms of Linux (you'll need an EFI boot loader and EFI aware kernel now), etc. none of them will work.

Basically, Bootcamp as we know it is dead. The only thing left are operating systems directly compatible with the EFI firmware, and that's not what Bootcamp was. These new systems are now basically identical in functionality to the original Intel macs before Bootcamp was released (albeit upgraded and fully 64-bit).

Windows 7 is definitely a step backwards, everything about 8.1 is better and faster and more secure and you have the store so you don't have to go out searching for new apps.
I do most stuff on the Windows side but I do go the Mac side occasionally to see what's new.

No it doesn't? Or has that changed? My friend who runs Win8 on his 13" 1920x1080 Dell XPS laptop always complains about it lacking scaling, resulting in tiny GUI elements.

Surprisingly, i do... though it was provided to me by my university...

I don't, even though my university provides it. Too lazy to deal with the process of getting it. By the way, last time I tried to use a legit version of Windows, it randomly stopped being "genuine," and then I cracked it.

too bad its not a free upgrade for Vista users. That was the last version of Windows I ever bought before switching to Apple

That's why I buy second hand retail licenses. I still use a Vista Ultimate 64 license on my MacMini 2010. It works just like Windows 7, so I can run Netflix, my DTV tuner and so on.

The Apple's approach, denying us from installing old Windows versions (yes: "not supporting" some version usually means denying loading the installer from Bootcamp) makes more expensive using bootcamp.

People can complain all they want, but it's not Apple's job to coddle people who use a legacy (and face it, it IS legacy) piece of software from a direct competitor. Why should they?

Wait, how old is OSX? And I thought Apple had no competition.

Huh? More like if you steal your friend's keys do you own his car? It you own something that implies you bought it or it was given to you. Stealing something does not transfer rights to you, as if that could possibly be hard to understand.

Unless Apple is blocking Windows 7 on a firmware level it should install just fine, however you won't be getting official driver support, which could be a huge issue with the new trackpad.

I guess we should be thankful the Macbook is still Intel, and not running on ARM like the rumours would suggest.

Apple still can't make a good trackpad driver for Windows, though. Hopefully W10 is better than W8.
