People can complain all they want, but it's not Apple's job to coddle people who use a legacy (and face it, it IS legacy) piece of software from a direct competitor. Why should they?

Windows 7 has the possibility of becoming the "next XP" in that lots of businesses still use it. Granted, most BootCamp users aren't large enterprises, but Apple continuing to support Win 7 in 2014 may have led some to hold out hope it would still work in 2015. I'm getting a new MacBook and am glad that I did purchase an extra Windows 8 license when they briefly sold the OEM version to end users.

Because it sells (some) additional Macs.

Maybe Apple made a deal with Microsoft: "You get us Office 16, we will get you Windows 10 users"

This is actually so upsetting, I just ordered a new 13" MBP the other day. Now I have to pay MORE money to get windows on it? Jeeeeeeze :(

I don't think anyone uses Bootcamp with a legal copy of Windows. #Bootcampgate

Well, you are wrong. I do and I depend on it.

Specifically, I depend on running Windows 7 which is required to run the software I need to use and I depend on doing so with Boot Camp because the software I use needs direct access to the GPU. And I need to use that specific software because my employer has standardized on it.

This is a short sighted and stupid decision by Apple that is going to cause a lot of unneeded trouble. Having a Mac that can run Windows 7 under Boot Camp has been the best computer I have ever owned. Apple is going in more and more bad directions lately.

Wait, how old is OSX? And I thought Apple had no competition.

Huh? More like if you steal your friend's keys do you own his car? It you own something that implies you bought it or it was given to you. Stealing something does not transfer rights to you, as if that could possibly be hard to understand.
What are you on about, you're talking rubbish. I build two computers for myself, I buy an OS to make one run, why can't I use that licence to make the other one run and have one in the bedroom and one in the living room. If I sell one with the OS on it that's stealing. If I build one for me and one for my wife that's two licenses. Even Microsoft has softened its stance on multiple licences.

Oh, was that support I experienced before? (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Honestly, it was a battle to install Win 7 every time. Will never bother with Bootcamp again if I can help it.

Too bad, because some people actually need Windows 7.

But Windows 8 is the best desktop OS MS has ever made, so no great loss here. I never liked Windows 7 - ever - it was always bloated and inefficient. It's simply an "almost fixed" Vista, which runs acceptably at best.

I was shocked when I first installed Windows 8 and found it had a memory footprint of only maybe 2/3 the size of Windows 7, and that it ran better on minimal hardware. New PC OS releases never did that in the past. Now both MS and Apple are doing it. Windows 7 is a patch, not a solution.

This is no big deal. You can easily install Windows without Bootcamp Assistant. Then use Apple's Bootcamp software from Apple's website.
First create a new partition for it in Disk Utility. Format probably doesn't matter as the Windows installer will reformat it anyway.
Boot into your Windows Install disk.
Format and install into the partition you made.
Now you have Windows installed. Now you just need the software and drivers.
Download the software from Apple's website.
Put it on a USB stick or something.
Install it.

It's weird how the previews are free but the releases are not.

You're missing the point that Apple didn't make drivers for the new hardware that supports Windows 7. So no this doesn't work - and yes, i've tried, I set them up for a living (it was me that submitted the original news item when i discovered yesterday, hence the thanks at the bottom)

I guess chalk it up to a poor analogy. Not only do you need licenses for all your cars (plates), you need gas. Not only that, your purchase included the OEM firmware to run all the systems. Build your own car, you either go old school electro mechanical or buy a stand alone ignition that includes firmware written by the company that built it.

If you don't like the terms, don't use the product. You can't legally install OS X on third party hardware which is far worse than Microsoft's terms. There is always Linux.

I don't really care if Apple drops support for Win7 as the support sucked anyway. VMWare has better drivers. But it's one less thing for them to do and I get that. What I don't get is why so many here harp on Windows so much. Seems like the pendulum has swung and Windows just gets better while Apple adds shiny "features" of which many don't work very well.

Then maybe they should make THUNDERBOLT WORK. I can't even use ethernet on Windows 8.1 on my 15" 2012.

I'm running a legal copy of Windows 7 on my MBP, with Parallels. It's running like crap though. I used to run it in Boot Camp on my older Mac, and it worked much better. Really wishing that the few things I do in Windows would be supported on Mac so I can ditch it altogether. Mainly my Access databases... anyone know of any Mac alternatives?

Alternatives to Access? File Maker Pro is all I know of.

Respectfully, I believe this is keeping with their pattern of dropping legacy software support. I honestly can't blame them for moving on from supporting an OS that is 6 years old.

Apparently, Apple feels that it is their job. Otherwise, bootcamp wouldn't exist.

My Power Mac is still running Windows XP through Connectix.
Intel iMac Snow Leopard uses virtual box to run Leopard, XP, and Windows 10 preview.

Fine with me, with Windows 10 coming out, I wouldn't have a need for anything less than that...

It's funny to see how everyone thinks it's okay to run the same copy of Windows on multiple machines (PC + Mac). The Windows license allows it to run on one machine only so you can't just install your one copy on everything you own. Theft is theft, folks.

Funny how Microsoft doesn't strictly enforce this since they will allow roughly 5 activations for a single license key. I have a Window 7 Ultimate license key which I will get about 5 activations from, then I have to call and have the activations reset.

Also I hope you do know it's not Windows itself that has any value, it's the license key. It's perfectly legal to download and install Windows ISOs, but you only get 30 days until you have to activate.

That's the unofficial, lax standard. MS would still like you to buy one version of Windows per every desktop/laptop combo, they just won't explicitly enforce it.

Though they do tend to be a little more strict when it comes to Macs, since they don't come with a Windows license by default.

I'm using Windows 10 on bootcamp now... the preview version runs just fine. W/o a cost, no reason to stay with Win 7 unless you just don't want to take the time to migrate.

Updating to Windows 10 probably going to be a headache
whats Apples logic in forcing people to use Windows 8. 8.1 or 10

Users scuff Windows 10, but people also scuffed iOS7 too... without even trying..

Anyone can do that.... but it takes guts to actually use it, then complain :)

Get your priorities straight.

I would upgrade to Windows 10, but i don't use it even to warrant any upgrade, since 90% of what is do is pure Mac based anyway....
