Apple is closing its Apple Store located in Atlantic City, New Jersey, which will affect 52 employees who currently work at the store and will need to be relocated, reports Bloomberg.

Apple has filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the state of New Jersey signaling its intention to shutter the store. It's not clear exactly when the store will be closed, as the store's website does not yet list a closing date and Today at Apple sessions continue to be available.

It is rare for Apple to shutter stores completely, and in a statement, an Apple spokesperson told Bloomberg that the closure was due to a "sharp decline in tourism." "We have made the difficult decision not to extend our lease," said the spokesperson.

Apple says that all of the store's employees will be offered other jobs within Apple. "We look forward to serving our Greater Atlantic City customers through our southern New Jersey, Delaware Valley, and Greater Philadelphia area stores," read Apple's statement.

The last store that Apple closed was located in Simi Valley, California, which Apple shut down in September 2017 due to low sales and issues with customer traffic.

Update: Apple's store page for the Atlantic City location now notes that June 30 will be the final day of operation.

Not surprising. Not sure what anyone sees in that town. After spending most summers in my life at Ocean City, Maryland, I was shocked to see how much of a dump Atlantic City was when I visited in 2004. The beaches are dirty and full of debris, and if you like the griminess of urban decay combined with that then you'll like visiting AC.

As someone who lives 15 minutes away from here, it’s sad to see it go.

Granted I’ve only gone in twice in 8 years...

AC has been in a major downturn for many years (tourism, gambling, etc), there has been a major uptick in the past year. All casinos turned a profit 2018 YTD vs last five years.

There was no parking for this store. You either had to park at a casino (most were $10 during the week and up to $20 on the weekends). Or there was a lot a block away from the store that would let you stay for less than an hour for a few $$.

The “south jersey” store they refer to is an hour away (Marlton). So effectively, online shopping is the only feasible Apple store experience for those of us stuck in “south” south NJ.

AC truly is going through a revitalization. As a husband and father of two, expendable gambling money is non-existent. However, the restaurant scene is still quite good. Beaches, not so much (go to ventnor, longport, margate or ocean city). Revel is reopening under new owners, brand and name. Hard Rock is opening next month as well.

Stockton University just purchased a ton of real estate and is building an entire “island” campus (ventnor) less than a mile away from the soon to close Apple store. I’m surprised they didn’t wait another year as they would of had quite a bit of potential student clients.

Sad that no one appreciates the rich mafia history of the frown town, or a place that takes your money then gives nothing of value in return (gambling).
(Sorry for sarcasm.)
On other hand, the Ocean City New Jersey Boardwalk is a place to go—beautiful and full of charm.

Yo! when I lived in center city Philadelphia the best pizza place ever was directly across the street from my brownstone....until the FBI and DEA raided it and shut them down for running a gambling ring out of the back.

or.... the former employees can find another job... just like everyone else in America has to do when they lose their job.

As an Apple investor, thank you Apple. Keep those profit margins nice and fat. There is absolutely no money to provide your AC-area customers a convenient service. Cut your losses and find a location with fatter wallets and more people.

Always look out for number one, Timmy- those invested in stock, not your products. You're about to be a trillion dollars company, and you won't get there unless you focus on only the markets with money. Those losing their jobs and customers who now have to drive will help us get that extra digit. You probably put a nail in that malls coffin, too.

Those of you fanboys who absolutely love personifying a multinational company... know the type of corporation you are personifying. They are not mom and pop. I don't personify Apple. I know what they are. And I want to ride that train to a trillion dollars at whatever cost.

That was the only reason left to visit the retail side of the Playground. (The mall in Atlantic City, which is built atop the beach and quite stunning.)

Still, note to anyone in the area: give the restaurants upstairs a try. They’re excellent and I would hate to see them close as well.

Um, okaaaay. Apple Stores are the most profitable in the retail business when looked at by revenue per square foot but not even an Apple Store can single handedly prop up a dying shopping center.

I'm not familiar with area. Isn't AC expecting an uptick in tourism with the recent change to gambling law?
The law was just changed and hasn’t gone into effect yet. Plus, there’s not guarantee that people would even have to go to AC to make bets.

I'm not really surprised given it was the last worthwhile store left there. But it sucks because it's the closest store to me.

From your description, it appears the Atlantic City town fathers are hoping that location scouts for the next DC universe film will discover it.

Location scout: "What do you think?"
Zack Snyder: "Its perfect - we won't have to change a thing!"
Location: "Right??!!"

Atlantic City is a very sad story. Such a beautiful name.

I agree, great name, even if its not much a city but a small town? reminds me of East City or City of the East -Ciudad del Este- actually a big city in the border between Paraguay and Brazil

Ha. Ha. The only Apple aspect you are invested in is making hyperbolic comments about it being evil. If you had stopped at your first paragraph it would have been a decent post...

But you had to transition into your fact-free fantasy world where Apple is somehow a villain for being a for-profit company. No profitable company builds stores exclusively for customer convenience. Not even Starbucks. They do it primarily to increase sales. Seems like 10 y.o. lemonade stand logic but maybe not. Yes, markets with money are where companies want to be because sales can't be made without buyers (who have money). In AC's case, it's rebirth hasn't panned out as projected. You erroneously opine that Apple's leaving will kill the shopping area. Thing is, Apple is one of the last to leave, not the first, not to mention major casinos that where shuttered for years.

It's never pleasant when layoffs happen but no company wants to close a location, admit failure there, and no employee rationally believes they have a guaranteed job.

So I'd say you need to find a more fact based rant for next time.

I'm actually kind of surprised that they're closing with sports betting coming to town. Having a shop like this where you can pick up a tablet, laptop, or get your equipment checked out would seem like a good spot to be in.

Granted depending on what the lease renewal costs it could be prohibitive to gamble on the future there.
