"We love that early energy," reads the Apple Store's message when visiting the U.S. website. "Almost ready for you. Pre-order begins at 5:00 a.m. PDT. See you soon." Apple has been doing 5:00 a.m. pre-orders for the last several years instead of the 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time pre-orders that it used to have.

Customers in more than 40 countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, the UAE, the U.K., and the U.S., will be able to pre-order ‌‌iPhone 17‌‌ models when the store comes back online.

The iPhone 17 will be available in Lavender, Sage, Mist Blue, White, and Black, in 256GB and 512GB storage capacities, while the iPhone Air will be available in Sky Blue, Light Gold, Cloud White, and Space Black, in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max come in Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue, and are available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options. This year, there's also 2TB storage tier exclusive to the Pro Max.

The ‌‌‌iPhone 17‌‌‌ is priced starting at $799, while the ‌‌‌iPhone Air is priced starting at $999. The ‌‌‌iPhone 17 Pro‌‌‌ is priced starting at $1,099, and the ‌‌‌iPhone 17 Pro‌‌‌ Max is priced starting at $1,199. After pre-orders take place, a launch will follow on Friday, September 19.

The whole taking down the website schtick is so old and predictable. Best of luck to those pre ordering. The days of day one pre orders are long gone for me. My 14Pro will go towards a regular 17, but I’ll wait for holiday time to do it. Good luck to all.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why they need 5 hours to update their store for a few new products. Or why they have to take down their entire store, preventing the ability to buy anything else.
To stop the bots from preordering phones. And also to build excitement.

Shutting the site down also limits the possibility of a DOS.

But they told us we could get our order lined up to hit the buy button as soon as orders went live, and then they pulled the website? How is that supposed to work?

Marketing and to build up excitement. To generate buzz.
A few years ago when you used to have people queuing outside Apple Stores for days and the launch would get global news coverage than I might have agreed with you. But these days, I don't think there's been any buzz for a while beyond sites like this, especially when it's only pre-ordering. There's not even the excitement of having to get into the online store within the first couple of minutes of it re-opening to have any chance of pre-ordering, these days it can take hours before some of the models sell-out at pre-order.

Why does this site keep referring to it as pre-ordering. Before today you could if you wanted to, pre-order. Today you actually place an order and get a delivery date.
You're still pre-ordering as the phone isn't actually released until next Friday. For any other online retailer who doesn't have pre-pre-ordering like Apple, that's what pre-ordering always tends to be. You're ordering a product before it's actually available to ship.

Orders placed before today weren't pre-orders (which would eventually become orders with no further action). All they were was a chance to pre-populate your basket, with no reservation of stock or guarantee that what you'd put in your basket would actually be available when the time came for you to place an actual pre-order (i.e. later today)

we already had the first pre order but now it’s time for second pre order! We should consider ourselves lucky there isn’t a third pre order needed.

I can only speak for my language area, but here the "journalistic" technology pages are full of articles about the closed store and the pre-order.
In my opinion, the "journalists" are just happy to have something to report on.

Probably ordering a regular blue iPhone 17. I expect this to be the best selling regular iPhone ever, I think the difference between the regular and Pro model has never been smaller than this year, I think the iPhones 12 were also pretty similar.

I went to the Apple Store app (UK) because I’ve been considering a refurbished phone over the last couple of days. Why does the whole store need to be down? I’m not interested in any of their new stuff right now. Let me look at the other products.

Just be patient - out of the 365 days that the Apple Store is online and available for your perusal, Apple decides to bring down the store only 1 day each year (consistently) for their newest iPhone launch. Stop complaining and just be patient, it will be back up in no time.
