Like my boomer coworker last year, literally bought an iPhone 12 from Verizon the day before the iPhone 13 was announced, and when I told him, he said "It don't matter, I wanted the 12 anyway," as if he didn't overpay for something that would've been discounted the very next day 😂

I was hoping for a new iPad with white bezels but it seems I’ll have to stick to my old one. The black just isn’t as nice to look at.

So excited for the Pixel 7 Pro launch, oh wait this is an iPhone event, yawn. Same old same old, still a grid full of app icons like in 2008.

Wake me when Apple finally updates iOS. I will say iOS 13 + 14 had some nice improvements and much needed new features, but 15 + 16 nothing really.

I sure hope AoD ( Always on Display ) isn't some debunked rumor and is true, that's a fantastic feature.

I used to get excited for Pixel launches. And yeah, I absolutely hate the forced grid. I don't get excited for iPhone launches all that much anymore either.

But what is the Pixel 7 Pro doing that's so exciting? I had to give up on Pixels because they sound good on paper but the experience does not live up to it, especially not for long. I won't deal with an in-display fingerprint reader, for one. iPhone doesn't sound as good on paper but the experience generally holds up a lot better, especially over time.

Guess I'm just getting old. I'd rather take kind of boring and reliable (which admittedly Apple is slipping at a bit lately) than flashy and buggy and soon forgotten.

It's just as painful talking to non-tech-enthusiasts about phones now as it was PCs in the 2000s. It doesn't help that the industry is deliberately deceptive. The sales people are not informed about anything but sales and are paid on commission, so no one is motivated to tell anyone the truth.

I had a similar experience with an older person but my biggest problem was the predatory pricing, the "insurance", and all the other fees that came along with it. People don't even know that phones can be simply bought outright and that there are far better financing options than the network operators. Verizon was the operator in this case too, but AT&T is just as predatory.

The Pixel 7 Pro looks very underwhelming. And I'm a huge Nexus / Pixel fan, having owned almost every Google phone made, but the 7 Pro looks to be the first one I will skip, seems more like a Pixel 6.25, a very minimal upgrade, barely any different than the 6 Pro.

And me a diehard Android fanboy, will admit the iPhone 14 Pro max with the AoD ( Always on Display ) and hopefully killer battery life, does seem very exciting.

I don’t have any extra spending money but it’s fun to watch and read all the comments. :p

Neither company seems to quite know where to go next, but at least for now it seems the iPhone has settled on a pretty good middle ground. It was annoying losing a lot of customisability when going back to iPhone, but I soon got used to the consistency. Still miss things like the ability to schedule a text message to send later. Still a few gaps that third party apps can't fill and Apple has not yet deigned to provide.

But yeah after going back to the smaller size, I am tempted by a Pro Max as well. The battery life will be incredible, even as far back as the 11 Pro Max I had the battery life was fantastic and judging by this 13 Pro it has only gotten better.

I'm always late to order, then have to wait a month or 6 weeks to get the device. When do pre-orders usually start? Is it sometime today, or more like this Friday or next Wed or??
Usually Fri @ 5 Pacific now? I always forget because it used to be Midnight which I liked better because then you were only fighting the enthusiasts. Now by 8 Eastern you are competing with general population too. Plus if you work early that stinks too. At least at 3AM, I could popup, order and go back to bed.

It is the only thing right now I am interested in as I am not upgrading any hardware… (oh and maybe a change to the iCloud plan tiers)
I'm looking at moving my Mac to Apple Silicon some time in the next year, so I've got my hardware antennae up, but that's next month's event. This is the only one that seems even tangentially audio-related, and so I'm not only tangentially interested at best, but I'm tangentially interested by something that's itself tangential.

Well, actually, I'll check one thing -- are they offering the watch in round yet? If no, it's still no sale.

What does an ’Always on display’ mean? Why would anyone want that? It would ruin the battery in no time.

Completely disagree. AoD is a must have for me. Have had it for 5+ years on all my Google Pixel phones, and love it. Samsung Galaxy phones have had it for many years too. And I think Motorola first came out with it back in like 2015 with much fanfare and success.

Battery hit, is maybe 2% to 3% over the course of a day. Very minimal battery life is used due to the OLED display tech.

I like AoD because the phone can just be laying on the table and you walk by it and see if you have a missed text or missed email

Where with an iPhone you walked by laying on the table and it looks like it's powered off, not even on. You have to physically tap it or touch the phone to see if you had a missed text.

Sounds like a nightmare. I spend enough time on my phone without being distracted again by messages/notifications when I put it down. The black screen and phone looking ‘off’ is more relaxing. It would also be a privacy issue if I’m in a meeting or whatever and my notifications screen is constantly on show. I hope Apple make this feature optional because I definitely wouldn’t want it.

On Android's AoD there's numerous settings options;

You can have them on silent as they pop up
You can have them show no details
Or you can have them show everything
Various ways to have AoD display on your lock screen

Personally it's a must have in a smartphone for me the past five years
