Apple has taken down its online store in preparation for iPhone SE pre-orders, due to start today at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

The original iPhone SE was a budget 4-inch iPhone before being discontinued in 2018, but Apple has revived the name in with a new 4.7-inch model announced earlier this week that looks like an iPhone 8 with internals similar to those of the iPhone 11.

There's a single-lens 12-megapixel rear camera in the iPhone SE with an f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization, and support for Portrait Mode and Portrait Lighting. Night Mode is not supported, but there is Smart HDR, Wide color support, and more, plus an LED True Tone flash with Slow Sync capabilities.

Because the iPhone SE is physically identical to an iPhone 8, it continues to feature thick top and bottom bezels. The top bezel houses the 7-megapixel front-facing camera and microphone while the bottom bezel includes a Touch ID Home button for fingerprint-based biometric authentication.

Like the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max, the iPhone SE features support for Haptic Touch instead of 3D Touch. That means ?3D Touch? has officially been eliminated from Apple's ?iPhone? lineup as the now-discontinued ?iPhone? 8 was the last ?iPhone? Apple sold that supported ?3D Touch?.

The UK Apple Store shows a different placeholder

The second-generation iPhone SE features an A13 Bionic chip, 3GB RAM, and a low starting price of $399. Comes in white, black, and red, and comes with 64, 128, or 256GB of storage. First pre-orders are expected to ship in one week.

Telling me to get some extra sleep on the app.

hahaha

Little does Apple know, I have to stay up until 2AM to preorder! No way am I waking up at 2.

With the SE preparing to launch, I think it will serve Apples lineup really well for the next two years at least. It will meet a lot of consumers needs in terms of affordability/Price-point selection.

Name any other tech company whose online store goes down for 2 hours when they add a new product to it
Definitely think they do this to build up the anticipation...to your point, I don’t know any other company that does this. There are simple things such as A/B testing and gradual rollouts to production to where you would not need to bring a store offline to add a new SKU.

Not for me, thank you.
I find it amazing that somehow there is a lot of buzz, even for underwhelming products like this one.

Agree, the rumours were pretty spot on here. Nothing new to shout about.

Is this really a shut the store down launch? I just wanted to check An order status :(

It creates hype though which due to the lack of an event, Apple want to make.

I know right? And i wish their website would actually still be a store. It’s horrible to navigate. Always takes me forever to get from a product to the accessories. I miss when it was an actual online store but that’s a story for another day.

So you’re saying you’re not the target demographic for this phone? Of course it wouldn’t appeal to you then. This phone really is intended towards iPhone 7 owners and under. And I don’t think there really is a lot of ‘buzz’ about this phone, considering they didn’t have a keynote about it and they have one marketing piece on their website. So I’m not sure where you’re Drawing the conclusion to that.

Shutting down the entire store for the addition of a phone is ludicrous. It doesn't add hype it's just annoying. Yes, it's a good value iPhone, but I want to buy an iMac not a phone. Naturally I'll take that back and say it was all amazing if they release a new iMac... ;)

Lol, you could wait until tomorrow to order this phone and you won't have any trouble getting it. I don't know why but it annoys me that Apple treats the launch of a retread phone like this like its some massive event that people are going to be rushing to buy.

Apple, you are releasing a phone that has been out for 3 years and have put new components in it that are already outdated. Let's not overthink this one.

iPhone 8 and under, rather. I own an iPhone 8, and this is an identical form factor. Should fit my existing case perfectly, which is nice.

Sure, but iPhone 7 is going on four years old (And then factor 6/6s owners into that equation), and you’ll see more iPhone owners for that specific model probably interested in the 2020 SE

I don't think this is aimed at iPhone 7 users at all. People owning an iphone 7 could have at any time purchased an iPhone 8, but they didn't. If their iPhone 7 is working fine then why pay over $400 for nearly the exact same phone?

It is. So if it’s not aimed at iPhone 7 owners and below, are you suggesting this is somebody probably that would be interested in this phone who owns an iPhone 11 and above? I doubt that. It’s fairly obvious where Apple placed this phone specifically in terms of the 4.7 inch variant for the iPhone 6/6s/7/8 Owners.

Unless you have been living in a cave, there have been a lot of rumors, speculations, predictions and what not about this old phone "mashup" with a new name. Not just here, but other sites and YouTube tech community also. And no, of course, I am not on demographics for this, I don't even think iPhone 7 users are. It is more like kids, people on a budget, people who don't like changes, Touch ID lovers, Home button lovers etc. Nothing appealing for me on this one.
