It is. So if it’s not aimed at iPhone 7 owners and below, are you suggesting this is somebody probably be interested in this phone who owns an iPhone 11 and above? I doubt that.

No I'm not suggesting that and no where did my earlier statement imply that. I just don't think that anyone using an iPhone 7 that is working fine for them is going to spend $400+ for nearly the exact same phone.

Lol, you could wait until tomorrow to order this phone and you won't have any trouble getting it. I don't know why but it annoys me that Apple treats the launch of a retread phone like this like its some massive event that people are going to be rushing to buy.
Because people will rush to buy this phone and it is a big event for Apple and people who want this phone.
Apple, you are releasing a phone that has been out for 3 years and have put new components in it that are already outdated. Let's not overthink this one.
Apple did their homework and knows not everyone cares about the latest camera and OLED. Other than Touch ID everything else is current. There’s not much to overthink.

Apple still sells the iPhone 7+ (128GB) brand new Jet Black factory unlocked variant for $449 in the clearance section of their site. It could support 3D Touch if on iOS 12 or older.

And no, of course, I am not on demographics for this, I don't even think iPhone 7 users are. It is more like kids, people on a budget, etc. Nothing appealing for me on this one.

Bolded: Yes, that’s exactly what Apple designed this phone to be, an entry-level affordable phone (Or budget as you worded it) But you’re insinuating an iPhone 7 owners wouldn’t be interested in this device, how would you know that? I think you’re going to find those who appreciate touch ID, will gravitate towards this phone, plus in terms of the more expensive iPhones, it’s a significant leap, there’s a reason Apple reintroduced this phone at this price point.

And, I don’t think this was intended for ‘kids’, it’s a global phone for different sector/emerging markets where it is more affordable.

better CPU, better gpu, more camera features (because of the better ISP in that CPU, mostly), better wifi, better cellular speeds, also that nice express card power save feature (useful if you're in certain cities). Enough to warrant an upgrade to what likely will be the last model of iPhone in that form factor. I thought the iPhone 8 was it, but I'm glad to be wrong.

No, they won't.

Lol Apple did their homework? Apple realized that with the iPhone XR and iPhone 11. Now they have released a phone that's been out since 2017 and stuck in last years components. Same camera with portrait mode added. Let's not act like this is the reinvention of the iPhone. Its Apple doing what Apple does to squeeze money out of people. I love their products but I'm not blind to the fact that this is a complete and utter cash grab with very little effort put into the final product.

Lol, most of those things look great on paper but will have very little difference in day to day usage for most people. Same camera (with Portrait mode that should have been in the iPhone 8 anyway) same awful battery life. I'm not saying its a bad upgrade for someone who's phone is on their last leg or who wants to buy a cheaper iPhone, but at the end of the day this is about as lazy as Apple can be in introducing a new phone.

But you’re insinuating an iPhone 7 owners wouldn’t be interested in this device, how would you know that?

I can't speak for everyone, but a work colleague and also my niece have iPhone 7. They are thinking of iPhone 11 or iPhone XR, they don't want to spend a lot on the Pro ones. Not that it reflects the masses, but lot of people would like to try a refreshing design rather than stick with same old arguably "boring" design. But yes, for the ones who price is deciding factor, or for the ones who dislike changes, I guess this one would be a great option.

So because the phone's shell is the same, it's the same phone. Got it. Seems smart.

Whatever Apple’s motivations may be, people will be getting a whole lot of phone for only $400 here. And there are about to be a whole lot of brand new iPhone owners because of it.

Never said that but if that makes things easier for you then ok.

Hahahaha, Apple is releasing a phone in a worldwide Pandemic when the entire world is basically shut down. There are not going to be people lining up for this phone now or any time in the near future.

And I thought this was for people upgrading from the 7 and below? That doesn't constitute to new iPhone users...

Am I missing something or does this product not make sense? US -> UK prices are usually the same(ish) so I expect this phone to cost £399. Last month I bought my girlfriend an iPhone X for £270. Is this phone better than the iPhone X?

Not trying to be negative, genuinely interested in why a phone that looks like it came out in 2014 but with some modern internals, costs more than the phone I thought was semi-modern.

Never said that but if that makes things easier for you then ok.
No, but that's clearly how you're thinking. It's how many people think. Until the outer shell changes, you won't consider this to be a different phone, if a four year old phone to this isn't enough of a difference for this to be considered a solid upgrade for you. A simple way to see things, without a doubt.

Now they have released a phone that's been out since 2017 and stuck in last years components. Same camera with portrait mode added.

Just based off your comments in this thread, you have a very severe misunderstanding of this phone and it’s market. The fact that you’re so fixated on ‘last year‘s components’ shows that consumers don’t even pay attention (Let alone understand or care to), they see the price point and familiarized form factor, that’s it. You’re taking the simplicity of something so straightforward and over complicating it.

No, other groups are allowed to buy the phone as well. For example, Android phone folks who like the idea of 5 years of OS updates for $400 rather than 1-3 years of OS updates for the latest $1,000 Android flagship.

I never said it wasn't a different phone. I said it was Apple at its utmost laziest of releasing a new phone to the public. Yes the design is old and outdated. I don't have a problem with the updated components, but you are getting the same camera, the same garbage battery, and the exact same build as a phone thats been out for several years. How you cannot see it as anything but lazy is baffling to me.

You point out a handful of similarities and dismiss the many "updates components" (as you put it) to prove a point, which isn't a mindset I respect. Apologies.

Can we stop with the $400 nonsens? $400 gets you a ridiculous 64GB of RAM, half of which is gobbled up by the OS. Anyone buying that model is going to be desperate for space in a very short amount of time. 128GB or higher is the only models that make any sense. After taxes you are close or over $500 so let's be real with the pricing here and stop acting like $400 is the price. Its the base price for a model that no one should buy if they expect to keep this phone for a while.

I don't think you get it at all. Apple knows what they are doing. They slapped a new name on a slightly refreshed iPhone 8 in the hopes that the new name and lower price will encourage people to run out and buy it. I don't think they will. You do, and that's fine. But guess what, my opinion on this phone isn't wrong just as yours isn't.

Apple released an iPhone 8S and changed the name to the iPhone SE and there is NO disputing that. Its a cash squeeze by Apple so we'll see if it sells well or not.

Well ok. They won't vs they will. One opinion vs another opinion. My opinion is right vs your opinion is wrong. :p We will see where it goes. Apple is the only entity that has any demographic information, and as has been said on these forums, bet against apple and you lose.

One can love Apples products and understand that Apple isn't selling a pro max for $399. Mercedes won't sell their 2021 model S class for $30K either, etc.

The phone actually has 3GB RAM. And 64GB storage would work for me and a lot of other people. Only using 23GB of 64GB on my 4 year old 6S. 🙂

Oh god please Apple has been wrong many many times. I'm not saying they are wrong here, but how'd they do with the $349 homepod for example? I'm not saying this phone won't sell, maybe it will. I just think its lazy on Apple's part and people should demand more from them. Do I think its going to sell crazy well? No, but I guess we'll see.

An 8S would have had an a12 processor not an a13 processor. It's akin to saying the original SE was an iphone 5sss. But why don't you put aside your biases and at least understand this is Apples entry to a less expensive model, with some compromises. Current CPU with older tech. Not everybody will see this as you have pendantically stated in this thread.

I'm not sure I ever understood this POV. I'm at 16/32 GB with all the apps and locally downloaded content I would want.
1.99 or whatever for the first paid tier of icloud storage per month enables all the features you should be using like icloud photos, streaming music service, etc.

That being said,
  1. This has nothing to do with value. No way should apple charge premium dollar for storage that should be cheap or where entry level phones should start with a competitive amount of storage.
  2. If you are taking a lot of video, might be a caveat.

You tell me about the Homepod. What was Apples internal targets? Did sales meet the targets? Were they really wrong or is that your own opinion?
