Today marks Apple's second aniversary of the opening of its first retail store in May 2001. This press release reports that 57 Apple Stores have been opened and that 20 new stores are planned over the next 12 months.

Three more prominent locations were announced, including Apple's first international Apple Store in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district. The other high profile locations are downtown Chicago (June 27th, 2003) and San Francisco.

Rumors of international Apple Stores have floated around, including previous specifics about the Tokyo store - but this is the first official announcement by Apple that the Apple Stores would be built internationally.

It would be great to see some more international stores - I know that we've seen so many people screaming for them.

I'm wondering on Apple's choice of a Japanese store first - I would have thought that Canada would have been an easier one to set up....

I think Apple does well in Japan.

Well... at least the iPod holds some crazy % of the marketshare there in MP3 players.

I can't wait for the Woodford, County Galway store to open.:D

Seriously though, Toronto has got to be coming up soon, right? (Maybe in conjunction with the Canadian iTunes Music Store, perhaps)

I have an Apple Store in my area. What I'd really like to see out of having the Apple Store is some onsite or same day service for my Macs. Even when I take my Mac into the Apple Store, they keep it for two weeks. That's not really acceptable if you use it for work.

Finally!

Walking by the future Chicago Michigan ave store has been very painful as this store has taken forever, with a demolishing and a rebuiling, but I know for sure that it has a cool glass ceiling on the second floor and a giant apple window. No sign of any metal facade, but the winter here is pretty brutal.

I'd like to see one in Oklahoma. What's that Oklahoma isn't a foreign country? You could have fooled me (I live in Oklahoma).

Lol, okies don't get your panties in a wad, it was a joke!

I don't have numbers, and am too lazy to find them right now, but yes Arn, Apple does well in Japan. In fact, Apple's marketshare in Japan is significantly higher than it is in the USA. Ever since Jobs took over, Mac marketshare in the USA has been at or below 5%, but there have been times in Japan when they have cracked 10% in certain market segments, like laptops, for instance.

There have been multiple occasions where a particular Mac model has been the #1 individual computer model in Japan, as well.

If I recall correctly, iPods have over 50% marketshare in Japan for MP3 players (or, at least, had that at some point during 2002).

So, anyway, I think Japan is really the best choice for the first non-USA Apple store.

Besides, Apple needs to start playing up the transparent multi-language capability of OS X, as it is one of the number one advantages right now of the Mac platform...especially with respect to Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

I don't have any numbers here, but a company like Apple has many reasons to do well in Japan. Japanese like things to be well designed and smooth functioning and they usually don't mind paying some premium for them. This is not meant to be a definitive statement, but I am Japanese and I have an idea of how we function. :D (Though I haven't lived there since '86... Been in the States since.)

I have no problem believing that iPod would do exceptionally well in Japan. Whereas Americans seem to have (what I think) unbelievable fatuation with price, Japanese like things to be small, slick and well designed. (Examples: Look at cell phones in Japan... Also, I think this is some of the reasons Xbox is not doing too well in Japan.)

Getting more Apple stores in the US is certainly a key ingredient to getting the possibility of a Mac in the minds of consumers. Most people when polled didn't even think of it as an option - or didn't have any place to try and buy.

Go apple - spend some of your cash!

Hey, thats funny, i live in Co. Galway in Ireland..... and thats exactly what im looking for. Come on apple im only a couple of miles from yer manufacturing plant, it would be so easy.... (mmmm i wish)

New Orleans would be nice

While Dallas is still closer to me than N.O., the international traffic and draw of the city seems to me to be the perfect place for a store.

and my parents live there, but that's not the point.

Isn't it ever-so-slightly coincidental that the Chicago store opens the day that WWDC ends, and that there are also a couple of online Apple Store promos that end on the following day (the free printer and the .Mac discount)? This could just be coincidence, but something tells me it's not.

New software? Not terribly likely, since Panther will still be in beta and there aren't many apps that Apple would make a major push for in June.

New hardware is possible, but just what is still up in the air. Everyone wants their PPC 970 PowerMacs, but I don't know if they'd actually be ready to ship in late June. A 15" aluminum PowerBook would only really be impressive if it came along with a CPU upgrade (such as to a 1.25 GHz G4; I don't expect PPC 970s yet). The iBook, iMac and eMac can very likely be ruled out.

Of course, it could be that absolutely nothing outside of a preview of Panther is shown at or near WWDC. But the convergence of dates is just a bit suspicious...

funny that you don't have one already since the support centre in Europe is located in Ireland :p

Now if they only got one store in Helsinki, Finland, that would rule! :)

This is no reason to launch an Apple Store in Japan first. The purpose of the Apple Store is to ensure that underserved buyers (i.e., most of the general public) get exposed to the beauty that is Apple hardware. It's safe to say that Japan is well aware of Apple.

On the other hand, Canada is grotesquely underserved in the Mac market. There are retailers in Toronto, of course, but they could never get the exposure that a flagship Apple Store on Yonge Street could garner.

C'mon Apple! It's been two freakin' years! Let's get some total quality Apple Store action in Canada!

Ginza is an ideal choice for an Apple store - it's a swanky uptown retail district, with lots of expensive shops and it aleady has a huge Sony museum, which puts the Sony store in NYC to shame. I think the idea of being neighbours to Sony appeals to Mr Jobs, and I think that Tokyo will go nuts for it!

Oh, and yeah, I wish we could have one in London - at the bottom of Neal Street where the FILA store used to be would be cool.

now we're talkin' :)

I doubt think we will see it though, I think Dallas is a much much more likely spot to find a future apple store.

of course, they could put one in the Lakeside Mall in Metairie (a suburb of New Orleans).... that would be sweet considering that is only a few miles from my house :D

Lakeside would be nice, and I'd like to see it in the sub's as well, but I'd put my money on it going into Canal Place, or the Riverwalk for a lot more foot traffic and tourist draw.

I visit Lakeside and Clearview, but most visitors don't. Stay near the Quarter, and you'll get visitors. Besides, Trent Reznor could be the store spokesperson. hehe. :)

If Apple are to expand into Europe, I would guess it would be in this order:

1. France
2. Ireland / UK
3. Germany / Sweden
4. The rest...

Why? Apple has focused on France during the last couple of years, Apple already has a large administrative infrastructure in Ireland, and Germany and Sweden were (after the UK) the first European countries to get their own Apple Webstores.

I'm Norwegian, so I'll probably have to wait some additional years...

Apple if your listening come to Kansas City

Please Apple. Its no fun to drive all the way to St. Louis or Denver to go to a store. And CompUSAs workers in the Mac section barely know what a Mac is...

MicroCenter is better.. but not the same as the knowledge your own employees provide...

Yes, you are right indeed. Apple would be making a mistake to put the store in the Lakeside mall. The tourists seldom make it out to Metairie (not much reason to, if you asked me)

I could see an apple store in Canal Place. The location is good, being right outside the Quarter and all... would definitely have to put up a NO DRINKS sign :D
