Apple Store London to open November 21

Lucky Bag numbers

if anyone has got any experience of an opening day, is there a fixed number of those lucky bags and they are out of stock within 10 minutes of the opening, or you can get one even if you turn up a lot later on that day?

It is impossible for me to go and queue for the opening, I've got too many things going on that day.

There are only 300 of em and I would expect them to go out of stock fairly quickly, certainly within the first 30 mins - just depends on how many people are allowed in the store at once!

I'm confident that the contractor has everything under control. Things should begin moving quickly. Very surprised that you can see into the building. At our local stores they had plywood in front of the facade and then heavy paper on the windows.

It's a mainly glass storefront - I think they had to take the plywood down so that the pavement could be re-done. Also, we can only see inside the store when the main front door is open (most of the day, because they're carting stuff in and out).

She had a glimpse at the shop interior and her comment was that they've got an awful lot of work to do to get it finished for the 20th. I'd imagine the contractors are claused up to their eyeballs not to miss the launch date, but I had a funny fantasy of Steve hitting the roof when he finds out it wasn't finished in time, ha ha.

I know from first hand experience that the US stores do give educational discount (as of April 2004) but only to US students. Even my international student card wasn't good enough...

So you could assume that the London store will accept UK student discounts at least. However, Apple seems to have changed and tightened up its educational order policy over the summer regarding internet orders, which now require you to make the order on a uni networked computer (a right pain), so they may not offer anything. Worth asking at the time.

I'm planning on picking up a case and maybe even a dock for my iPod when I go, but I'm worried I might buy something more that I don't need for my 12" PowerBook.. 😛

On the note about contractors and finishing on time - it will be in their contract that every day over time that they do not finish could cost them thousands or even millions of pounds. Trust me, they WILL be finished on time 😉

Or if you bookmarked their old portal you can still order from outside of the uni network.

Thanks for that. I guess I'll have to forget about the lucky bags. Then I might go on the sunday (if it's open) or the monday...

Yeah, it will be open on the Sunday... 12 - 6, plus Steriogram will be playing live at 3.

I'm very concerned about the future of my bank balance. When in the US, I've never managed to walk out of an Apple store without something but since I only go into one 2 or 3 times in a year, it hasn't been a problem. Having one in an area where I go several times a month is going to be a severe temptation...

Walked past last night around 7pm and there still appeared to be much industry going on inside tho the doors were closed.

Talking of the doors - they're enormous. Ying Mao could get through them with his arms stretched above his head.
 
Just got my free tickets to the expo so that and the store awaits.
Will there be any hardcore people Q'ing earlier than Friday?

Yeah - I can never convince my mum to give me money for a new computer over the phone, it has to be done in person (a long, complicated psyching-out process)...!

I've just returned from lunch and had a chance to get a good gawp at the interior of the new shop. There's certainly a lot of work to do, but it looks like they've got the walls finished, complete with white backlighting. They seem to be putting more effort into sorting out the pavement outside, including laying some sunken glass blocks in front of the doors.

I took a couple of photos as well, but not sure if they're worth posting!
 
I guess for those who haven't taken a walk down Regent St in the past few weeks, pics would be good. I've only seen it in the dark recently - the uplighting on the arches is very effective. It will definitely draw the eye compared to most of the boring shop fronts on Regent St.

As for people queuing before Friday? Well, there have been people 2 or 3 days early at most flagships openings so I guess there will be a few hardcore fans who might be there just to be there first (those who have used up all their cash on the airfare and can't afford central London hotels? 🙄 )
I guess once you've decided that you are being crazy enough to camp out one night, you get onto the line of thinking 'what's another night?'
I was thinking though that with another shop being fitted out next door (Ted Baker) and the one on the other side open, which way are people going to queue? Inconvenience the customers of the other shop or the builders in Ted Baker? I guess the privilege of choosing goes to the first in line!

I suspect that you'll get a group of people at lunchtime Friday, another group between 6 and 7 after work and then big group at 7ish on Saturday morning when the Tubes really kick in.

Incidentally, the current weather forecast for next Friday night is for showers (40% chance of rain) and a low of 5C

Brrrr. I'm not too mature to admit that I *am* excited about the store opening, but there's no way I'm going to get hypothermia just for the "privilege" of having my wallet £249 lighter to get some stuff I don't need or already have. I mean, good luck to everyone camping out, but I'll be the one strolling by later in the day not wetting my Y-fronts whether there's a lucky/sucky bag left for me... But... there'd better be a free t-shirt going though, or I'll start throwing my (electronic) toys out of my pram!! 🙂 Seriously though, I do need to pop by to try and get a 20GB iPod that I promised to track down for a 70 year old family friend. I'm hoping there might be a discount on offer in some shape or form (and no, I'm not chancing it by buying a bloody lucky bag! 🙄 )

I passed the store again today (I pass it every day, on my way to college). It appears the computers have now arrived in the store - of course not set up yet though.

In terms of the queue, I think going towards picadilly would be best - that way we can see the whole line - queuing (sp?) in the direction of a major intersection (ox st/reg st) probably wont work too well. If we can all see each other, it should keep the spirit up.

I still dont know whether i'll camp or not - may pop along at around 7am-ish.

Just posting to say that i will be camping out from friday evening. But what time should i really get there on friday to secure my place (and my bro) and lucky bag thanks!

And if anyone who has been to another apple store where they have been giving out lucky bags and you got one could you tell me how apple work this. Do they give the first 300 people a ticket just before they go in and you can collect the bag when your at the till?

Camping out too, me and a friend are getting there at about 6ish so about then i assume. Wouldn't think there will be more than 300 people camping out so anytime that night would probably do. gonna be a good (and bloody cold) night!

I admire the adventurousness of youth. Don't think that I would ever have that kind of stamina. The only thing close was at the Panther release party. My wife and I was at Apple Store when they closed it at 8pm. We ask were the line would form and so we waited. Needless to say we were first in line.
 
hi all. this is my first post on this site, but the excitement about the opening of the new store compelled me to write. i guess i plan to get there about 0630 on saturday, dont suppose this will get me a lucky bag, so will just have to shop instead.
are many girls going - kinda get the feeling i'm distinctly in the minority here.
i think any of you who are planning to camp out are very brave, judging on how cold it is tonight. good luck! just seeing that video showing the japanese queues was quite enought to put me off!
well, maybe i'll see some of you there - if anyone is travelling in from chelmsford, i believe the first train is at 0512, so maybe i'll see you on the platform,

Excitement is in the air

When I heard that Apple were opening a store in london I wondered whether we would see the kind of queues we saw in the US and Japan. I only had to read this forum for a few minutes to realise I was wrong and for those tingles of anticipation to become shivers of excitement.
I'm getting an early train down to the bright lights on Friday and meeting my friend H before going on the Mac Expo. Then the plan is to go and say hello and offer a bit of support to those in the queue early evening before going on for a drink or two, then another drink or two etc before popping back to check on the queue to try and get an idea when or if to join the queue to get one of those lucky bags many of us have got our eyes on.
I got confirmation of my bank loan yesterday and should have the money in the next day or two. The plan is a 12" ibook, 20" imac, dv cam and wireless network so you can understand why my juices are flowing. Its going to be sad to say goodbye to my G4 400 which has been a trusted, reliable and fun friend. But I'm pleased to say I have found it a good home. My 36 yr old sister used a computer for the first time last month (unfortunately one from the darkside) but our mum has offered to buy it for her for xmas so its a story with a happy ending.
Anyway enough waffling lads and lasses. If you see a white bald headed guy and a black bald headed guy walking (more likely staggering ) past you around midnight say hello. And hopefully there will only be about 290 of you ahead of me when I do finally join the queue probably when the transport system wakes up in London - so much for the 24hr city.

PS some of you have noted that birmingham is the next city in england to get an apple store. When I get some time I'll try and get some pics of the location and upload them to the site

I suspect it's a definite minority but there will be at least 3 (I'm going with another female friend)
