Finally got through to a chat agent and they told me that this is "a known issue" with AT&T's Premiere website. They told me to call. Fun.

Adrian P.: Were you able to add your current data plan from your cart?
Bill K: no
Adrian P.: Your current data plan is DataPro 2GB.
Bill K: it only gave me 3GB or 200MB as options
Adrian P.: Okay, let me replicate your account to view these information's.
Adrian P.: I am currently working to research your concern. Please hold and I will be right back with you within 2 to 3 minutes.
Adrian P.: Thank you for patiently waiting. As I've checked on my resources and I have replicated your online account. I’m showing the same error. It is a known website issue, for you to proceed on your process. I'll provide you the number to call, please call our Premier Support Center at 1-866-499-8008, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM EST. This is a known issue and Premier Support Center will be happy to assist you in completing your order. We will file a trouble ticket and do what we can to help you place order. I am sorry I was not unable to solve your problem today. But our Premier Support Center are aware of this issue and working feverishly to fix it.
Bill K: no problem, thanks!
Bill K: have a good day.

maybe the apple website simply doesnt offer/recognize grandfathered in texting lans. I called at&t yesterday and they said that i would be able to upgrade to the iphone 5 and still keep my 200 texts for $5.

If this is the case, i hope its not an issue when i purchase the iphone at an apple store.

It did for some people and it didn't for others is the consensus I've found.

I'm going to buy through AT&T just to make sure it doesn't somehow get screwed up on Apple's end.

I called aT&T this morning to check, it made me select the $20 unlimited text plan, too. The guy said that because some plans are grandfathered, they're not being fed the data to Apple, but your account doesn't change until you activate it. He said the best bet would be to call AT&T or go to a store when the phone comes in to activate it, so they can guarantee that you keep whatever grandfathered plan.

went by my local AT&T store today and they were also confused as to why ordering through Apple only offered unlimited text or pay as you go (i have the $5 200/month text plan). Anyway, they were able to order me the phone there and keep my account the same. They said you do not have to change your text and/or grandfathered unlimited data plan. They are quoting a 14-21 business day back-order at this point. Hope this helps.

It is helpful. I am going the store route at this point because I got sent through multiple call centers and nobody knew how to help me on the phone. Ridiculous that we spend this much money on these things and can't get any help with it.

yeah - i agree. It's unfortunate to have to wait now when i would have easily had my order in on time via apple.com. AT&T and Apple have enough resources to make this online ordering work and i haven't been able to get through 3 times now when ordering iphones over the years. unbelievable.

I hear you, I had 2 in my cart but didn't want to pull the trigger and risk screwing up the plans. Ended up going to the local store on Friday and they were able to put it through, no problems. Guy at the store told me he'd had multiple people with the same issue in that day.

Whatever, at least I'll get one in a couple of weeks and I don't have to deal with the hassle of trying to go to a store.

I have the same plan and mine showed up just fine.
I did have the same problem last year though. I contacted AT&T (through live chat) and they were able to get it back. I suggest you contact them.

Has anyone activated their line and been able to get the grandfathered text messaging plan back after being forced to select pay per use or unlimited when ordering online?

I did. I called AT&T before i activated and made sure they gave me my $5 for 200 msg plan. When I activated this morning, i sent a couple texts and checked my plan...said i had 197 remaining :D

Thanks for the reply. So did they tell you to activate first, then to call back and add the plan back in? I called them and that's what they told me to do. Doesn't sound right since once it leaves the account, it will be very hard to get it back I assume.
