Next and I did not know this, but AT&T store policy for NEW AT&T customers is to require a two year contract on ANY iPhone activated in the store. It could be a 1st generation iPhone or an unlocked iPhone 4 purchased from another country. If you do not cancel the contract within the first thirty days you are subject to ETF just as if you bought a subsidized phone. All other previously owned phones could be set up contract free (month to month). I was told this was the result of an agreement Apple made with AT&T. Once again if they like you they will back date your contract so it expires a few days after you agreed to the two year commitment.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but I believed you have being taken advantage by someone who wants to complete his/her quota, contract length is based on the phone you buy from them, is not based on the subscriber status. If you signed up for a 2 year contract and received no phone, then I highly recommend you go and ask for a $200-$300 iPhone 4 since you are already doing the 2 year time and paying the EFT. If you don't want the iPhone 4 for X reason you can sell it and even make a profit out of it!. Call AT&T HQ and fix this up since you shouldn't have to be in a 2 yr contract nor pay the ETF based on a device that you didn't pay for.... Remember one thing is contract (which is based on length not plan) and another completely different thing is the monthly plan you have to pay for an specific device...

Some Apple stores suck. I bought it online from Best Buy. They charged the $599 for 16GB and I picked it up an hour later. Total time in store was 5 minutes.

I had my own iPhone and I am not locked into a two year agreement even though I am opening a new account.

I think you miss the point. The system used by AT&T to activate iPhones on a new AT&T account did not give this rep the option to select a month to month service plan.

The rep enters all your information, gives you the phone back. You connect your phone to your computer finish activation through iTunes, select your data plan. After this your new account is fully activated and ready to use. Then the rep is allowed to go back into your new account and post date the agreement so you are not subject to an ETF. The rep told me the system can not simply set up a new account (month to month) and activate the iPhone all in one step. All other phones yes an iPhone no. This is a quirk that Apple and AT&T has caused by requiring you use iTunes to complete the activation of an iPhone.

When I told the rep I wanted a new commitment free service, the first thing she asked me was “did you bring your laptop”. This is because of the process their system must use to activate an iPhone. Once again this ONLY pertains to a NEW AT&T account using an iPhone. If wanted to attach this iPhone to an old account the process is different.

I seriously doubt the AT&T sales person would do all this crap just for fun if they initially had the option to select a commitment free service in the beginning. Anything is possible, but I will give the rep the benefit of the doubt and that the AT&T system really is that complicated.

Anyway thanks for the response, if you were confused by my previous comments I suspect others were also. I concur no one in their right mind is going to agree to a 24 month commitment when they are not receiving a subsidized phone. I surely will not and did not. If anyone in the USA had agreed to a commitment unknowingly they do have 30 days (from the date the account was opened) to cancel the contract or get it changed.

Very interesting!!! I wasn't aware of this 'gotchya' !! Learn something new everyday!

I feel sorry for you guys in the US, here in the UK we can walk into any apple store and buy one off the shelf network unlocked to do as we please :p

When will we be able to do this in the USA? When the Apple / AT&T exclusivity contract expires? And when is that date?

to me sounds like the OP is confusing no contract with no plan. You have to have an AT&T plan to buy an iphone. If you don't want a contract you can buy the phone at full price. You can't buy it if you are not an AT&T customer. That's why they call it an exclusive agreement people.

I feel sorry for you people in UK, you overpay for everything, have to wait longer to get it, don't get the same level of support always, and don't get the iphone for $199.

personally I don't care that you can't get it without a contract. I need a cell phone, with a data plan. ATT network works for the most part, and is the same price as verizon. Until something of equal quality for a lower price comes along. I'll stick ATT, and keep getting a new Iphone every year for free (once I sell the old one for more then I paid for it)

oh and cheers! :D

for the OP I have a suggestion for you to get your phone.
1. get ATT contract ($35 activation fee)
2. Buy phone ($199)
3. Cancel contract and pay ETF ($325)

price was you should be about the same as buying it unsubsidized.

How did you manage to do that? They sell iPhone only with a plan. If I am wrong, please tell me how.

I think you are playing word games. Do you really think I was asking the wrong questions?

Just call any Apple store and ask for iPhone without a contract.

Thank you guys.

There is nothing missing from the post.

It is locked to ATT but sold without a contract.

I am not a ATT customer, but that doesn't matter. I was told repeatedly that I can but he phone w/o contract. Even in the NYC Apple store.

What you were told was true. You can buy the iPhone without a contract. Now what people mean by contract is that you can cancel your iPhone plan at anytime without a cancelation fee opposed to being locked in for 2 years. However, you still have to be an AT&T customer and have a number. So if anyone told you different (or you just misunderstood) they were just mistaken. That doesn't give the sales people a right to be rude though.

I placed the order online. It rang up for $599 and that was that. It originally showed up as $199 but changed to $599 when I placed it in my cart. I'll sell you a slightly used iPhone 4 if you want!

Just to let anyone know, it is possible to buy iPhone 4 without a contract/plan/whatever!

Just bought one in the Apple store, Boston. No questions asked.

What do you guys think?

That's fine but how do you think you are going to use it now without first activating it with AT&T? You can't jailbreak it or unlock it without activating it with AT&T first.

Wrong. I had no problem doing exactly that. Despite what you and a couple others have stated I had no problem activating a new, factory sealed, purchased off eBay, iPhone 4 without an active AT&T account using a 2-3 yr old cut down SIM from a long ago closed AT&T account. Unless something has changed since July 23rd when I got mine off eBay it can be done. You can also purchase a "phone book sim card" off eBay (AKA activation sim) for around $5 or even a Go_phone SIM. You can also borrow a friend's sim card. I never even touched the original AT&T SIM that was in the box.

You can also check this out:

You're right- they don't get the iPhone for $199. They get a 16GB 4 for free on a $90/month contract. Or, they can pay $70/month and get the 16GB 4 for $60. Or they can pay less per month and pay a little more upfront for the phone itself.

The joy of choice.

From what I remember, the iPhone4 was released in the UK in the same day as it was released in the US (and numerous other items, electronic or otherwise, are released in Europe before being released in the US, if the company even decides to release the product in America)... so what's your point?

What makes you think the service in the Apple Stores in the UK are worse than their US counterparts? Have you actually gone to a UK Apple Store for service? No?

...and you do realize that you have to sign up for a 2 year contract each time? Meaning you will eventually have to pay $399/499 ('reduced' price for early upgrades) for your phone?

...and have you considered that some people actually travel outside their home country and don't want to pay insane roaming charges?

What an idiot.

Cheers

Ok. You need a little lesson in math. At AT&T:

Total Cost = $199 + (24 months x $100 per month) = approx $2600

I am actually ignoring the sales tax, and the activation ..etc.

Now, you can get an O2 MONTH TO MONTH contract for as little as $8 (Ya baby it's really really "eight bucks!!" read it and weep :) ) per month.

So, in England with an cheap O2 contract (and lets assume the iPhone costs $800 cause I'm lazy it really costs 495 Pounds as of right now):

Total cost = $800 + (24 months x 8) = $992 !!!!!!!!!

I'm sure the $8 does not include the data plan; but, so what? If you don't want to have data you don't need to buy it.

If you wanted to add data for a few months, and then remove it; you could!! In fact, you could do anything you want with it; as in buy it, NOT ACTIVATE IT, and use it stop your coffee table from wobbling. You don't need a contract and permission from AT&T to do that.

As far as AT&T service goes. It is absolutely the WORST. Their Service cuts off at AT&T's Gigantic headquarter campus in San Ramon, CA. I was there last year, and laughed myself silly. I got cutoff 4 times talking to one of their VP's about a project I was completing for them. I ended up having to use a land-line. If your service doesn't work in your OWN headquarters you have problems!! Let's not delude ourselves. AT&T service stinks over here where I live (The good old Silly-Con-Valley) I don't know about other places. In my own apartment it works only in a single corner. It will cutoff anywhere else :( You know what their solution is? They want to sell you a $400 mini-cell-tower for your house!! It's not enough that I'm paying almost $3000 over two years!! If I want reliable service I have to buy my own tower too  !!!!!!

So, why am I a customer? iPhone allows me to do things that make my life MUCH easier and more efficient. Things like checking my emails as I go about my day, entering the number of Calories I've eaten (YEP!! like most engineers I'm a heifer :D ) and using the GPS function to get around, and yelp to find things to do when I'm there, and play angry birds, and buy movie tickets and take pictures with the absolutely horrible camera  ...etc. Let's face it; I'm NOT an AT&T customer, I'm an iPhone (therefore Apple) customer.

I was with Verizon until last year I switched because of the iPhone. Will I switch if Verizon gets the iPhone? Not sure, Verizon is no panacea either. Perfectly good phones turn to crap when they are implemented for the CDMA technology. The battery life suffers tremendously. Also, there is that software herpes called "BREW" that Verizon infects perfectly good phones with that removes the best features; so that they can then charge you to turn them back on again. For example, the same crackberry on Verizon has fewer features than the same exact one on the other carriers!!!

Then; there is the constant lying. Like implementing 4G next year!! How? The standard hasn't been finalized. None of the so called "4G" services come close to the ITU 4G specs! The only people who are "close" are the Japanese, and even they (Dokomo) have got it working only on a test strip that is only 1.6 miles long. I HATE liars  !! I'd pay good money to see how Verizon is planing to provide 1GBb/s data service to cellphone. That's what the ITU standard calls for! 1 Gb/s for moving hosts; and 6Gb/s for stationary hosts (like your laptop with a wireless 4G data card!) Filthy liars :( I swear. Anyway, I won't be rushing back into verizon's arms anytime soon :D

Lots of misinformation here.

No Blackberry runs BREW software. Which Blackberry has less features on Verizon than it does elsewhere?

And I don't know where you're getting your 4G info, but none of it was right. At all.

Hmmmm.... Guess What.

My Dad Walked Into a San Jose Apple Store and Said "I Want a 32GB iPhone 4." 2 Minutes Later, The Guy Comes Out and Gives My Dad The Phone, My Dad Pays the $700 Something Bucks. My Dad Is Happely On His Way.......

The End..... :p:p:p:p:p
