sold out in ross park mall, pittsburgh, pa

Just got back from the Ross Park Mall outside of Pittsburgh, PA. When we first arrived around 11am, they thought that they still had some, but we were told shortly after that there were only a few left and had already passed out tickets for those models. They had no idea when they would be getting in more stock and could not tell me what models they would be getting.

I guess I'll have to be content in waiting for shipment and order online. :(

Nothing in Ann Arbor, MI

Called the Apple Store. Took 30 attempt before I got beyond the busy signal. No iPads in stock. She said to call back Monday. I ordered online. I'll still try next week, but I'm hoping the shipping estimates of 3-4 weeks get bumped up.

Apple manufacturers and distributes a tremendous number of iPads for launch day. Plus, adding that kind of advance-notice to their supply chain would overcompliate things while not providing any benefit. Would knowing really make the wait easier? Is a quick phone call every couple days so hard? Not to mention it wouldn't make it that much easier to get one - there'd be additional line-ups on days of subsequent shipments.

Apple is by far not the only company to do this. Other products with launch-day sell-outs, such as game consoles, have the exact same issue. (I remember the Xbox 360 being sold out for months, with no one knowing when there'd be more - by comparison Apple products become widely available extremely quickly)

apple had no problems allowing pre-orders for the first generation ipads so that we didn't have to go through this "who has stock?" game. i placed my orders a month in advance and they showed up exactly when Apple said they would. also, every afternoon anyone could check the next day's stock for each apple store by going to apple.com. the whole thing was very professionally handled and choreographed. I was impressed.

what they did this time around reminds me of the pre-1980s "Festival Seating" process for attending concerts (that has since been outlawed after people were trampled to death at a Who concert in OH) and it's use implies a lack of compassion and intelligence. I wonder if the difference between the coordination and management of the ipad 1 sales and the ipad 2 reflects the difference between Steve Jobs being involved in the day-to-day operations and his being out on medical leave?

I'm not especially impressed with Apple's interim management currently (very reminiscent of Dell...).

Chicago Muchigan Ave & Lincoln Park stores are sold out. Rep in phone @ LP store said they have 60 people waiting outside right now for today's FedEx shipment. She said she had no idea of how many or what models were coming. I missed out yesterday and think I'll wait until ltr this week to go.

Old Orchard and Woodfield mall stores in IL are also out, no idea about shipments. I hung around until 1 and then bailed. may check around 3 to see about a shipment coming in.

It is frustrating but surely, Apple, If any company can, knows best how to manage sales of their hugely popular items. Imagine Dell or HP dealing with this kind of volume at multiple stores.jeez. Apple customer service overall is second to none in my experience.
Anyway, don't forget, Apple has, what, 15 country, launch in 2 weeks, to supply for. Sure they could have delayed that like they did for ipad1.
Sure it all doesn't make sense but Apple deals with volumes, logistics, demand, customer service, that no one else can touch, jusayin.

Sf downtown

Webt to the Flagship sf apple store by Powell. There was quite a line, when asked about stock the staff person said all they had was 64gb verizon models left.

Good luck!

Apple Store on Stockton in San Francisco only had Verizon iPads today, and not a lot.

I decided to go with the 16gb Verizon for now (got the last ticket!), and try and exchange it later if I don't like Verizon. But so far I'm happy with it.

A rumor went through the line that they would either get shipments at 10am or 4pm. So if you're in SF I'd try around 4pm (since I didn't see anything around 10am)

I called Michigan Ave store, they got a shipment in but it sold out to those waiting in line.

Here's a note for everyone:

APPLE STORES DO NOT GET FEDEX DELIVERIES ON SUNDAYS.

If your local stores are sold out at this time you will have to wait to try again this Monday.

I love my Apple products, but I couldn't disagree with you more about Dell's logistics. They single-handedly reinvented velocity through the supply chain and forced the industry to change the way logistics are handled. In fact, had Apple learned more about designing to "delayed differentiation" whereby storage capacity, 3G vs WiFi, AT&T vs Verizon, etc. can all be determined by the actual customer order instead of struggling with projections ahead of time.

Dell did not invent just in time manufacturing. They are however worldwide leaders in making cheap, plasticky PC's with no service or support. Apple perfected JITM while maintaining quality, service and support. Dell can't even come close to them.

I never said they invented JITM. They DID reinvent the models for this industry. That's not my opinion, there are lots of books and doctoral studies on their successes in this area. Your Apple claim of perfecting JiTM is just laughable fanboyism.

I was told at an Apple Store that Apple is expecting deliveries tomorrow.

I don't think that Fedex delivers their palettes. :)

I hope you're right, I'll check again tomorrow. I was told by the phone support people at the Mich Ave & LP stores that FedEx delivers the iPads and they wouldnt be getting any on Sunday, I guess we'll see tomorrow.

went on a whim to the Cube on 5th Ave around 4pm today. originally wanted a 16gb wifi. ask an apple salesperson if any were available and only 32 and 64gb wifi left. in line for 10 mins and was told only 4 32gb ipads left.
bought a black one and got setup at the store. total time at the apple store was a half hour.

when all the ipads were sold, probably after 10 mins after I had gotten setup, store employees said that there would be a shipment tomorrow.

i lucked out BIG TIME! :)

Thank you steveruv, probably going to head over there this week at some point early AM or on lunch and try my luck.

Apple Stores at The Oaks Mall (Thousand Oaks, CA) and the Simi Town Center (Simi Valley, CA) still sold out. No word on next shipment, either.

Checked every apple store in NJ and a few in NY, PA.

Best answer I received was from Short Hills "check back Monday we might get a shipment"

I don't know what move to make next.

I went to the Apple Store in the Oaks Mall (Thousand Oaks, CA) today. Got there at 910A. I was probably about #36 in line, roughly. At 11:10 they started bringing people in for the shipment they received.

I made it all the way to almost the front. There were two people ahead of me.

And they brought all three of us in. They said they had a total of three units left, all of them 16GB wifi's which is what I wanted.

But then they said that they only had two blacks and one white. The two people in front of me both wanted the black units, and so I had to decide if I wanted the white. Tough decision. I weighed just getting it and then returning it within two weeks to get a black model (hopefully.) But there were still people out in the mall who didn't get in, and I figured one of them might actually want this model. So I said no, I'd pass. Ugh.

And in case you like irony, of the two people ahead of me, the two people who got one of the black 16's that I would've had, one of them originally ONLY wanted a 3G and got talked into "settling" for a wifi. And the other person was going to actually get out of line and go home 10 minutes before they started selling them, but, get this, I talked them into sticking it out. So in that moment, I talked someone into staying in line who would eventually take the unit I would've gotten. No good deed goes unpunished, I guess is what they say.

Oh well, maybe it wasn't meant to be just yet. Maybe when I do get one, it'll work out even better for me. Sorry to ramble, but now I can put this behind me.

The Whitehall PA apple store had some today. Was a short line

The Apple Store on N. Michigan in Chicago had some this morning. I missed out on a 64GB Verizon by literally 5 minutes.

I shouldn't have stopped at Dunkin' Donuts this morning on the way over :(

No one had them today. The Apple Store said Tuesday they'd probably get a shipment. AT&T got none and the other AT&T store got 2 on launch day. That's right, 2. The BB 2 hours away still shows them in stock but since they won't hold them I can't justify driving, unless I buy one and sell it on eBay.
