I have said it many times the forces of darkness are everywhere just waiting to strike when the opportunity presents itself... Even so, it is sad to see so many willfully ignorant morons spreading their garbage, hoping to kill off as many of their fellow humans as then can with their trash thinking and actions.

Last time I checked, scar tissue is for life buddy.
Millions get pneumonia each year for some reason or another. Millions more still smoke some form of tobacco or other substances, even though we know they are dangerous to lung tissue.

Those people are making a choice to subject their lungs to scarring. Yellowstone could blow its top sometime in the next 50 years. THAT will give everybody scar tissue all around the world. Nothing we can do if Yellowstone decides to kill us all.

So, a magazine article? I'm feeling a lot of "meh" here.
Just no. Please read more about this pandemic and not just what confirms your bias.
But what about your bias?
Deaths are starting to trend back up (in the US at least), actually. Yesterday, we had 902 deaths, which is the highest it's been since early June, over a month ago.
Yeah, I heard they're classifying broken legs as Covid. Sorry, I can't get excited about any trends if the numbers are not even reliable.
You shouldn’t have any problem linking to some of it then
Here we go, shutting down discussion by asking for proof. You can find it if you try. Just don't go only to the major media outlets.
The population size will have an impact but that’s exactly why I quoted figures per 1M population: it’s a number relative to population size not a fixed number.

You think America is over classifying deaths by 100x or Australia is underclassifying deaths by 100x?
Really?
Yes. Yes, really!

"Willfully ignorant morons" can be claimed by both sides. Neither side is pure.
Nor moonlighting as an Uber driver.
There is nothing wrong with making a living during this mess. Sometimes, cave man still had to leave the cave to hunt, eat, feed, and protect himself and his family. We aren't so different just because we wear pants.

I'm smart enough to realize that some of those Apple Geniuses will need to go make some money.

All of our hourly workers will continue to receive pay in alignment with business as usual operations. We have expanded our leave policies to accommodate personal or family health circumstances created by COVID-19 — including recovering from an illness, caring for a sick loved one, mandatory quarantining, or childcare challenges due to school closures.

Interestingly enough, despite our flaws, America is universally admired by Australians. You look up to us for leadership and guidance on navigating a complex world. Our strong bilateral relations is a national point of pride in Australia.

Ahahahahahahaha. Ahahahahahahahahaha. Ahahahahahhaha. Oh wait. You were serious? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

So why not try America's approach to combating the virus? Who knows, you might like it, a lot.
I'm not really sure "disorganised chaos" can be called an "approach". I'm also not really sure why you think anyone would "like" an "approach" that results in 100x more infections.

Oh and before all the crap about "America has more confirmed cases because they test more". Nope. The US has conducted roughly 119000 tests per 1M population. Australia has conducted 112000 tests per 1M population.

I agree that working as an illegal taxi driver is not a great job choice but I don't see how it's relevant to Apple closing stores due to a "shutdown" or "lockdown" or whichever loaded term you prefer.

Mocking doesn't help us have a conversation.
Neither does making ridiculous statements like "America is universally admired by Australians.".

You might as well have said Australians all walk on their hands because it's the "bottom" of the world. It has about the same basis in reality.

You're using a specific example to paint with a broad brush. Whether it's Apple or another company that has decided to shut down, some people still need to feed their babies. And Uber is not illegal taxi driving. It is long-needed competition. A lot of us are tired of the yellow cab driver taking advantage of us, smoking in the car, driving us all around town to ring up a high fare, treating us poorly, trying to rip us off on the fare once we get to the destination. Bad treatment by your "legal taxi drivers". We're tired of it, man. Time for competition.

I should clarify. Apple might be paying their people NOW. But eventually, if the lockdowns go long enough, EVERY company will need to stop or limit their altruism. Altruism doesn't pay the bills. Taking a side-job is a good financial defense strategy. Build up cash in case things get worse. And for sure, the longer the lockdowns go, the worse things will get.

I can't even begin to guess how you're trying to draw equivalence between smoking and a global pandemic, apart from stupid people seem to ignore the risks of both?

Would you prefer John Hopkins?

He notes that doctors and patients alike should be prepared for continuing treatment and therapy.

“Once the pandemic is over, there will be a group of patients with new health needs: the survivors. Doctors, respiratory therapists and other health care providers will need to help these patients recover their lung function as much as possible.”

Here we go, shutting down discussion by asking for proof. You can find it if you try. Just don't go only to the major media outlets.

... I'm happy to discuss the claims. If you or someone else has read the proof that is supposedly "everywhere" and "easy to find" you could link to some of it.

I can claim that every other human on earth besides you personally, is actually an alien, and that the evidence is everywhere. But don't you dare ask me for proof, you just have to take my word for it, and go find your own proof, which I refuse to provide to you. See how ridiculous that sounds? Or is it?

Yes. Yes, really!
Yes to which?

Check your pronouns. "I" am not the "you" you speak of. Meaning that "I" did not make the statements you claim I did. But I take your point. You could have just told the dude that there's no way to know if America is universally-anythinged by Australians. And I would have supported your statement. See there, no mocking needed.

And one of the ones creating the best ideas decided to shut down stores in USA and Australia. Because the "dumb" seem to underestimate or ignore the obvious.
People make up Apple.

I was simply pointing out the “dumb Americans” logic is silly.

And if a business with less than A$1B in sales per year has seen 30% or greater loss in sales due to COVID19, the government will pay the business up to $1500 a fortnight per employee.

This is a 6 week "shutdown" in reaction to a specific outbreak. The rest of the country (and many other countries) are already starting to "open up", because they actually had a plan, and followed it.

And Uber is not illegal taxi driving.
This is getting quite off-topic, but tt very literally was, illegal taxi driving until governments caved and introduced a law to legalise "ride sharing".

Ok fair point, I missed that.

The issue isn't so much that it's impossible to know - I can tell you without a doubt America is not universally admired by anyone except perhaps Americans.

The issue is that his entire claim - an American, telling an Australian how all Australians feel towards America. The valid responses available were to just roll around on the floor laughing at him or sarcasm the likes of which many people would likely never understand. At least the response I chose leaves no question about my intent.

Yes to which?
Yes to the first, and Yes, really to the second. Sorry, my creative alliteration wasn't apparent.

And the overall problem with the "proof demanders" is that nothing we produce will ever convince you. Just like your "proof" doesn't convince me. Johns Hopkins is NOT without their own bias. The people who wrote that are the ones with the premise, and as far as I know, they reworded the doctors' own words to fit their own media narrative. It happens all the time, so yeah. "Meh" is what I'm feeling.

And I'm STILL not convinced. The doctors still can't tell us if coffee is good for us or bad for us. We were all eating margarine for 30 years until some brainiac finally figured out that that stuff is toxic!

And so here we are. We were told that the masks wouldn't help. But now we must wear them. I'm just asking "Why?" and I'm NOT getting acceptable answers, only "it works, trust us". I get mantras when I'm looking for reasons.

We're told numbers of deaths, but then I hear that broken legs and tonsillectomies are counted as Covid cases, and death by car crash, heart attack, or stroke gets logged as Covid deaths.

How can we be expected to keep trusting the people counting these numbers and the media reporting on it all when we hear about numbers being fudged like that? So yeah, I think we ARE reporting 100X more than actuals. Maybe even 1,000X more. And I don't have to prove my doubt to you or to anybody. Maybe somebody needs to prove to me that the counting is accurate. Without that, I ain't playing this game of fear.

Seek to understand the reasons for our distrust, and you might begin to understand why we as a nation stand so separated on so many things. Demand that the major media cleanse itself of its toxic bias, and maybe we can start bringing the two sides together again. Or continue to mock the other side, and nothing will ever change.

Well, I tried.

wish aapl would find a cure for covid menace

I'd rather companies with a specialism in vaccine technology worked on it, rather than a company that knows how to make consumer electronics in China. It isn't like Apple is going to be giving anything away without making the most profit possible.

Just like we all developed immunity to the last two pandemic-scale coronavirus outbreaks.. SARS (the 'first' one) and MERS ?

Not sure if you are being sarcastic, but both SARS and MERS simply burned themselves out without wide-scale infection, due to rapid response and due to lack of transmission in asymptomatic patients.

nothing we produce will ever convince you.
Said without even an attempt.

Look, this is how things work. If Bob makes a claim that is not universally accepted (ie water is wet), it is Bob's responsibility to show some evidence or proof to support that claim. If he chooses not to, that's his choice to make, but his claim is no longer a credible claim. It's just his opinion.

If you believe something to be true, but shy away from any attempt at showing proof or evidence, it's a good sign that either you know it's not true, or that you just don't care and are more interested in arguing for Internet Points.

The doctors still can't tell us if coffee is good for us or bad for us. We were all eating margarine for 30 years until some brainiac finally figured out that that stuff is toxic!
Most foods we eat have positive and negative aspects, and the issue is usually too much or not enough of specific things.

This is why even the basic question "is water good for you" isn't just a yes or no question. Too little, you dehydrate. Too much, you either drown or overhydrate. Just like the porridge that girl stole from the bears, you have to get it just right.

We were told that the masks wouldn't help. But now we must wear them. I'm just asking "Why?" and I'm NOT getting acceptable answers, only "it works, trust us". I get mantras when I'm looking for reasons.
I mean, the WHO literally has a Q&A page about this. But don't imagine I'm going to provide a link to it. You have to do all the work to prove my point.

but then I hear that broken legs and tonsillectomies are counted as Covid cases, and death by car crash, heart attack, or stroke gets logged as Covid deaths.
Hear where, from who?

And I don't have to prove my doubt to you or to anybody.

No you dont have to prove anything. But without some kind of reference as to what the **** you're talking about "broken legs sounded as COVID19 cases" doesn't really pass the sniff test of something that's likely to actually happen, so again - you have an opinion, which you are welcome to, but without more information it's just that: an opinion.

The whole world is watching US response to this crisis and draws the necessary conclusions, despite the strong self-conviction of several US citizens to be "the best in the world". When it is not about acting like the bully in the schoolyard, truth crashes in.
The much reviled EC, so apparently fragmented and divided, responded much better, as a whole. The results speak clearly.
And what overwhelmed the first European countries should have been a warning to the US, which makes the blame for the reckless management even more serious. We are in July ...5 months have passed since they could have acted concretely.
And meanwhile people who have not yet understood what is going on try to convince other people that:
A - nothing serious
B - We are the best, we will solve soon.
C - We are the best
D - The best are here

ok, you really convinced me

- the virus was never isolated
- the virus was never proven to be contagious (which is something you can do once it's isolated, there's a very specific protocol for that)
- the virus was never proven to cause a disease (we carry millions of viruses on our body that don't cause diseases, it's normal)

You keep repeating this lie. The virus has been isolated, its DNA has been sequenced, and mutations are being tracked to trace how it has spread throughout the world. It's ability to cause a disease is well documented both in patients and in the laboratory, and its ability to infect cells has been proven. The research is published and has been reviewed and is available for anyone to read. If you don't accept these basic facts, there's no chance of a reasonable discussion.

It’s only a matter of everyone going in the same direction, for once. Like Asians and Europeans did when needed.
it seems that being “American” means that everything is granted, because of “best, richest , largest” mantra.

It reminds me of my Irish holidays in my younger days, the place I love most after my country: it was always something like “the highest Irish mountain “the largest Irish lake”...true, ok, but once you got out of the island all these hyperbole were brought back to the measure of reality. Tiny spots compared to the Alps or lakes of northern Italy, just saying.

Most people will be fine. No reason to act like a bunch of pansies over a cold.

Here are the storage trucks that were needed to house the bodies that piled up over 2-3 weeks IN JUST ONE HOSPITAL in NYC over "a cold".
