I think you nailed it. Seems like people these days require so much "look at me attention".

B/c that type of cheesy hoopla and shenanigans appeals to exactly the type of person (usually) who is waiting in line. They eat that crap up, so why not feed them their fill by the shovel-full if they're willing to spend hours of their life and hundreds of their dollars.

Just my 2 cents.

While I do go to launches after I hit the bars I do find it extremely cheesy with all the cheering and whatnot. I'd prefer to just go in and grab my phone and walkout.

I was there launch day. I have a phone.
I was there launch day last year. And had one. I recalled last year's thread after thread after thread after thread about pre-order fiascos and thought: hmm, a few hours of lost sleep and 15 seconds of apple cheerleaders running by, or the potential headache of the pre-order.
I wen with 15 seconds of cheerleading, and a few hours of lost sleep.
And yes, by 830am launch day I was at starbucks having a nice latte and playing with my new phone.

No one filmed me, no one interviewed me. I walked in. Got a phone and walked out. The staff was polite and enthusiastic. I have no complaints.

Does that make me an attention whore? meh, opinions are like....well, you know the rest.

Same.

Although I'm done standing in line for anything.

I used to stand in line for games and for the iPhone 4.... But now have no ambition to do so.

I can walk into a store the next day for any game. They almost never sell out. and my iPhone 5 has been ordered online. I don't need it right away. I think I'm just getting older and little things like owning a product before anyone else doesn't get me going anymore.

Would you prefer waiting for hours or overnight in line for a new whatever to then enter the store where people are stone faced, take your ticket, hand you your product and say "next person in line!"

I think that experience is available at BestBuy.

Any day of the week!
