I don't even think Subway always accepts it.... I've had issues in the DC area where some Subways have signs telling you their chip reader for credit cards isn't even functioning and to "swipe only". Ridiculous ... but I imagine it has to do with corporate vs. franchised stores and the knowledge level of owners.

I just blew the mind of a Subway employee two hours ago when I paid with my watch.

The main thing holding it back imo is that it still hasn't rolled out to enough stores. If I'm not 100% sure that they accept Apple Pay I'm not going to try and possibly create a weird/awkward situation if they don't ("That'll be $80." - holds watch to card reader for seemingly no reason). Subway, McDonalds, and Apple Stores are about the only places I know that for sure accept it.

Speaking of rewards, apparently I'll get a free cookie if I use Apple Pay in the Panera app. I'm wondering what's in it for them other than getting more people to use said app.

Some of the looks I get when I check out with my Apple Watch: priceless.
Hey and my primary card in Apple Pay is a MasterCard hehehe.

That's cool and all, but you can buy an Apple product from Target with a redcard and save 5%, which can be significantly more than $5.

I agree. I went to a San Francisco Apple Retail Store with my friend, and she wanted to buy some EarPods for her iPhone 5S since she broke her old ones. Never have I seen an Apple retail employee push something so hard. After a big lecture about how Apple Pay was better, she said no since she didn't care and wasn't tech-savvy. The guy was then expecting credit card, but she pulled out a wad of cash. He looked disappointed then went to their hidden cash register to make the transaction.

The funny thing is, in most Berkeley stores and public transit, it would have been the reverse. I can only use cash in most places. I had to buy a 25-cent stamp with a $20 bill just to get change for the bus.

Because the fingerprint scanner won't work most of the time, and for some reason, they decided to make it lock after only 10 seconds since iOS 7.

People aren't using Apple Pay for the simple fact that YOU CAN'T use Apple Pay!

Most places DO NOT HAVE APPLE PAY SET UP. They don't have the technology.

Instead of spending money giving $5 to customers as an incentive to set up something they already know how to set up, perhaps Apple should be thinking more about using that money to foot the bill for this technology as they know retailers across the country aren't willing to. THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO.

It's the same thing for EMV chips and NFC. It's one and the same. TARGET doesn't even have Apple Pay and that's a major retailer!
Most mom and pop shops take it. The major retailers don't. Unless you only shop at Walmart and Target, I'm actually having a hard time now finding a place that doesn't take Apple Pay. I even use Walmart pay at Walmart just so I don't have to have my wallet on hand much.

Credit card companies and retailers are heavily invested in making the purchase process "frictionless", in the belief that if it's incredibly easy to buy something, you'll be more likely to do it right now. This is kind of why credit cards exist in the first place - they remove obstacles to buying on the spot, if you don't happen to be carrying (potentially) hundreds of dollars cash with you. Panera is working to reinforce the idea in your subconscious that buying things at Paneta is hassle-free, to encourage you to come back and spend more money. They're literally training us with a reward. But, hey, I like cookies too. :D

I'm not sure what this means. But if I had the choice between saving $5 on a $1000 tablet and 5% on the same tablet at Target, I'd choose target. That comes out to $50 savings.

Here in Phoenix they do not want you feeding the machine money to get on the bus. You have to buy your pass beforehand to save more than 50% on the fare from either a ticket machine or a store.
