Would be hilarious if they went edge-to-edge for the new display, like the new LG 6K monitor, but had to have a notch for a camera.
Honestly if it lives in the menu bar like it does on my MBP, I could live with this.
Although I would like the option of having no webcam since I use my old iPhone 13 with Continuity Camera.

I've been wanting the Studio display for a while but after seeing that they only went down to like $1,300 at the most I decided to go for a different monitor. Ended up buying an ultrawide OLED with 165Hz refresh and paired with BetterDisplay.app it's been flawless– more than I wanted from the Studio display at half the cost.

what did you buy?

as soon as I got an oled tv I started gassing for an oled monitor

The Studio display is beautiful but I hope the new one has a matte screen. The current Studio display is too reflective.
Current model has a 'nano texture' glass option for $300 premium. It's incredible. When off, it seems to suck light/reflections and look like a black hole. :p
My wife can get bad eyestrain from reflective monitors - but the nano texture MacBook Pro and Studio display work extremely well for her. (I have Dell monitors with less effective plastic matte finish, but good enough for me, but I envy her nano texture Studio.)

You're getting worked up over semantics. Also why do YOU need a 480hz display for Excel?

I don't need a 480hz display for Excel. I'm fine with the 60hz monitors I have, and having used 5k, 4k and 1080p monitors, any resolution is fine, as is any refresh rate.

Hell, I was using 30hz the other day. It was slow, but usable.

I bought the current one about a year ago and a few weeks ago picked up a Samsung 32" G80SD (4k, 240Hz, HDR) that I run from my Mac via HDMI (and on a Windows PC via DsiplayPort) side by side next to the Studio Display.

Apple put themselves in a hole here as the MacBook can drive the G80SD at 4k w/VRR or 240Hz, desktop swipes, window animations, even YouTube all look more natural on the G80SD vs the Studio Display.

The Studio Display has better color accuracy and pixel density, which assuming Apple would want to keep, really will cap their refresh rate ability vs the competition. That being said if you're Apple only it'll feel like a nice upgrade, albeit at a cost.

Personally I like having both ecosystems feel natural, so I'd probably even upgrade to a new one to replace the current one and have it ride shotty next to the G80SD. I like having both I seem to do a decade with dual screens, a decade without and now starting a new one with two, we'll see how it goes.

As an aside I wish Apple & Nvidia would make up, M4 tech is great but its not like Nvidia is going to slow down anytime soon and I don't think Apple has an answer for hi-res / VRR / anything over 120Hz at 5k+.

i dont think apple would rush Thunderbolt 5 support in M4 Pro/Max unless they want to use it in next displays (TB5 means support for 120 Hz on 5k/6k displays)
Not necessarily. The new LG 32" 6K with Thunderbolt 5 was reported by one outlet to be 60 Hz. I suppose that report could be wrong, but the point is TB5 doesn't necessarily mean a higher refresh rate.

there's not a lot

5k is super niche

there are plenty of 4k that are cheaper and better in every other way

I like my S2722QC usb-c dell 27" 4k at home. It's a bit large for my taste, but a nice monitor, and not overpriced like Apple's offerings.

The speakers are trash, but I never use built-in monitor speakers anyway.

I 100% don't care about refresh rates. my screens run at 24hz :) which not all monitors support. the ASD is a really nice display and except for the price, its really quite nice. it would. be better to bump it to 32" 6K to have 4K retina. Running it at 5K native almost all UI things in all apps, especially text is just way too small, so yo are stuck running it in 3K mode :(. almost has me wanting to get one of those 5K X 1440 displays since its about the same res visually.

The current studio display is 5k native but renders at 2560x1440

I'm going to get either a 6K 32" or a 5K 32" (which is also coming out this year). I suspect it won't be an Apple model, but that depends on price and feature set.

As I've mentioned before elsewhere, I find default text size at 218 ppi with 2X scaling (6K 32", 5K 27") too small for my tastes, but I would find 5K 32" text size a bit big. The Goldilocks zone IMO would be 5K at about 29-30". However, I'd rather have too big than too small, hence my interest in that 5K 32" monitor. Alternatively, I can get a 6K 32" and run a custom resolution with non-integer scaling, but again it depends upon price, so I'm guessing it won't be an Apple one. Both Asus and LG have 6K 32" monitors coming out soon, and the Asus 6K 32" is priced at $1199. 😮

The Asus 6K 32" (no Thunderbolt 5, and no IPS Black) is to be released in Q2. The Acer 5K 32" is to be released in Q3.

I went for the Alienware AW3423DWF - 34 inches, slightly curved, OLED, adjustable stand. It's not 4K (it's 3440x1440) but checks every other box and more. It was discounted for Black Friday and I had some cashback offers and rewards points, so I took advantage of that.

I really wish Apple would allow for the iMac to be used as an external monitor so I can use it with my work laptop and use the iMac for my personal stuff. Definitely don't have enough room or want to spend the money on a Studio Display for work and an iMac for personal.

There is the Nanotexture Glass option if you wish to better control reflections.

The Studio Display being glossy is a selling point to me. If it was matte-only it would be far less desirable to me.

Give me a 32" at $1,999 (stand included) please

Edit: I'll even take a 32" 4K at $999 (stand included)

The LG UltraFine 32U990A and ASUS PA32QCV will probably fit the bill, though note their LG IPS Black panels are only 60Hz.

What’s the best like for like display from a third-party? I.e. 27 inch, 5K, 60 Hz; is there one??

I ended up using Luna from https://astropad.com/product/lunadisplay/ so I could use my old iMac as a display. Works well.
