It needs airplay and/or tvOS functionality. That would be dope. What if apple will actually release a tv with tvOS inside?
Sounds to me we finally have the long awaited real Apple TV, but it would probably sell too good that's why they ditched it ?

Can't wait for the jailbreak community to actually get their hands on it though.

Yeah, I also wonder how much room is left in there to simply ‘drop in’ a M1 Pro chip.
I really think it started development as a big iMac and maybe chip/component shortage and/or thermal/design problems forced them to choose otherwise. Still from a marketing perspective it would have made sense if they had put tvos or iPad OS on it.

It’s getting to where it’s almost impossible to hide just how arbitrary Apple’s limits are when imposed upon hardware by software. This thing could’ve been an Apple TV (without the need for a display).

This thing seems stupidly over-engineered and then intentionally crippled. Or maybe this isn’t engineering. Maybe it’s laziness/convenience and price gouging, because they have all these over-featured parts to use instead of something focused, less complicated, and less expensive.

Considering chip shortages car makers experience, and the fact most chip’s produced by the same factory, using something apple already has is a smart move instead of wasting time, energy, and other resources creating something similar but 60gb less…

If you had to design a chip for display only, and a software for it, you would be stuck with chip shortage and no sales.

I have a feeling this Studio Display is something else disguised as Display, i mean, it is going expand its functions/role in the ecosystem and so they are charging so much for it.
It’s not that much of $ actually.
iPhone 11 Pro was $1100 phone. And this machine uses same brains, plus more display panel, and more aluminum housing, and better speakers.

It’s not that bad compared to iPad prices.

Yeah but you can't compare them like that if it doesn't actually do anything close to what an iPhone or iPad does ...

From iPadOS. it really needs to grow up to take advantage of the capabilities of the M1 SoC. It's still a glorified iOS.
How do you feel the OS is limiting it?

I find I like the difference between iOS devices and Mac OS devices. I don’t want extra complexity on a touch device (of course, Apple keep adding complexity anyway).

I was thinking along these line as well but then looked the at the 27" LG 5K display that sells for around $1400. Granted it is height adjustable, but the plastic box, rather ugly design, lame speakers, etc. made the $1600 Studio Display price not seem so bad.
Oh I agree about the physical design. It’s the electronics that bother me. I don’t like the trend of overcomplicating everything by adding a computer and a general purpose operating system to it. It’s usually Linux SoC type stuff, but now we see Apple doing it with their A-series chips.

This industry is a mess of overcomplicated trash.

I rather see it, that Apple needed some chips for the Display, and with the chipshortage, they said we have a mountain of iPhone/ipad chips, why not use those :)

Being able to do something specific with a general purpose processor, and making it a cheaper initial development process by reusing existing chips, does not mean it’s the best solution for producing the product. We are constantly seeing this tactic introduce more problems for the customers that end up with the products. Complexity reduces reliability.

Explaining why a corporation chooses to do it does not justify the decision. Being driven by Wall Street ideologies is a guaranteed path to worse products. But the products don’t matter; just the stocks. That’s the problem with so-called “public ownership”.

Agreed. I've decided I'm not buying this one after all. I want a tad more screen real estate, so will probably step up/down to a 4K 32" for about the same money. I'll live. ;)
