Ehh, for less money you can get one of the recently-released 32-inch 4K 240Hz OLEDs.

And those come with multiple widely-compatible ports for any non-Apple computers you might want to attach ever.

The 5K resolution is nice, but I’m not convinced it’s worth giving up so much for.

Another “All-Time Low” article about an item that it not at its all-time low.

It was a tiny bit cheaper than now on April 28, 2024. (And that was “Ships from Amazon” and “Sold by Amazon”. All Amazon.) So this is not the all-time low now.

And by a tiny bit cheaper, I definitely mean “tiny bit” at just 2 cents cheaper ($1299.97 then vs $1299.99 now).

It was cheaper then, but again MacRumors will write “all-time low” because… I don’t know… Is it maybe because everything is affiliate links and it’s a better headline to say “All-Time Low” instead of “Almost All-Time Low”? I hope that’s not the reason.

Does the built-in Ethernet adapter gets sometimes disconnected when your Mac goes to sleep?

It happens to me on two MacBook Pros with USB-C hubs with Ethernet ports. I have to unplug the dock and plug it back in.

I don't have a wired connection in my home office, so I can't test this unfortunately. Is your 'wake for network access' set to always? That might help.

Very criticised… still one of the best thin I’ve bought in recent years, 5k retina is perfect, it has so many nice things in a single product. Haters will hate but as a owner I love it.

A lot of similar products are similarly priced if you want one that really works great with a Mac.

That said, I think a lot of criticism is about the price of the stand. What are you using to hold yours up? I figure most people buying a monitor like this are going with VESA anyway.

Yes- a lot of the hate comes from those who don't have one. Some of the early reviews were mediocre because the spec sheet doesn't claim HDR and the webcam was average given the cost of the display. If those things are important to you, then sure it's not the right monitor for you. I personally feel that it's brighter than many displays which claim HDR. It looks excellent next to my M1Pro MacBook Pro. Oh - and the colors match perfectly out of the box.

I'm sure it's wonderful. Wonderful!! But with a Samsung M80D (32 inches) going for US$430, as my grandfather used to say "keep your money". (He did not use a computer, though)🍸😹

I think it has more to do with it having the same display as the 2014 iMac that cost 1800$ at that time, they just removed the computer and dropped the price slightly 8 years later and the camera seems to not be as good either. They also right before doing that removed target display mode, what a coincidence

The color matching is the big thing. I tend not to use my big external monitor as much because it’s noticeably different than the Mac display.

I don’t care on Windows because that’s always kind of ugly anyway but on the Mac it’s noticeable.

I'm curious if you've used an Apple 5K display for any length of time?

I went 5K with the 2014 iMac and have not found a single non-Apple display that I can look at all day (usually for work) since.

If I was going for gaming, it would be another story ... but then I probably wouldn't be using a Mac to start with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I do look forward to the tech catching up to being able to push 5K+ pixels faster, though.

Amazon today has the Apple Studio Display for $1,299.99, down from $1,599.00, which is a match of the all-time low price on the monitor. This is the standard glass version of the Studio Display with the tilt adjustable stand, and Amazon also has a few other models on sale as well.

You can get the standard glass model with the VESA Mount Adapter for $1,299.99, while the tilt- and height-adjustable stand model is available for $1,599.00, down from $1,999.00. Both of these are record low prices on the display.

If you want to upgrade to the nano-texture glass option, Amazon also has this model of the Studio Display on sale. It's available for $1,599.00, down from $1,899.00, which is a second-best price on the Studio Display with nano-texture glass.

The Studio Display features a 27-inch 5K retina display with a 5120 x 2880 resolution and up to 600 nits of brightness. Apple says that the standard display is engineered for "extremely low reflectivity," but for rooms where there is a lot of glare, Apple suggests the nano-texture glass option with even less reflectivity.

$1299 should be the price regardless

This is the best consumer-grade monitor that exists on the market. True 5K (2880p) resolution, no PWM at all, amazing quality panel. Just buy it.

Anyone who is talking about 120 Hz or anything else related to gaming should just buy a gaming monitor. This monitor will work for games, but it is a high quality display, not a 0ms speed-over-quality gaming display.

Spot-on. Mine is superb for the photo processing I do. Far better than any other display I've used, if you're fussy about color. And at a decent price.

Sure... Apple's Pro Display XDR is better. But I didn't want to pay $5K to $6K for one.

I'm not sure we'll see 120Hz for a few more years at 5K. Even with Thunderbolt 4 it's a bit tricky to pull off due to bandwidth limitations. (There are displays on the market that are advertised as 5K which do 120Hz but those are usually ultrawide displays that aren't a full 5K vertical resolution). Apple would have to resort to DSC or other workarounds and I don't know if there are even any 5K panels on the market that support 120Hz.

Thunderbolt 5 will absolutely solve this problem and allow for 5K and 6K at 120Hz, but I doubt Apple is going to release a display that relies on it until most of the product line is refreshed with Thunderbolt 5. It's not known whether the M4 will include TB 5 or not; Apple doesn't advertise the Thunderbolt version on iPads.
It more than makes sense to introduce displays using Thunderbolt 5 the moment they have the Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, and Mac Studio equipped with Thunderbolt 5.

The following quarter the Macbook would have Thunderbolt 5 and any new desktop/laptop/headset Mac moving forward.

Fallback to 60hz and DSC for older Macs is irrelevant to Apple doing so before the latter and even forgoing standards and the former is more than fine for legacy devices

Had one for a year now. Paid the same discounted price back then (£1299 UK) so it’s not like this price isn’t on offer quite a few times in the year.

It’s a great monitor. Don’t really notice the 60hz. Its vastly overpriced though and its a joke that you don’t get a full stand for that money. I recently bought a 28” 4K for £400 which can do 144hz, IPS and has gsync/free sync, HDMI 2.1 as well as USB C /DP and a proper full stand! A lot better value and arguably as good even with the resolution difference. (I use that monitor on a PC though which handles scaling different to the Mac)

Did they fix the camera in these?
They made a number of software adjustments after the initial reviews. Whether the camera meets your needs, however, is up to you. I'm a business user and find that it works quite well for Zoom/Teams calls in my reasonably well-lit office. People say my video is extremely clear and looks good. I can't speak to more demanding use-cases.
