Apple could do with a 24” external display to give Mac mini users a reasonably priced option. They could save R&D by using the existing display in the iMac rather than having to develop a new one.

Now this is a really good idea.

It's not the point. For the price asked it should have 120hz. Sure it's not targeting gamers ofc but many creatives professional could benefit from 120hz. It's ok since the product is kind of old now but if the new one is still 60Hz Apple will stay omega niche in the monitor market.

Don't get me wrong I know color accuracy and build quality are great on Studio Display but this product sold poorly for a reason.
I agree - the display is overpriced, especially now that a couple competitors are entering the market at a lower price point (e.g., ASUS ProArt, ViewSonic). Studio Display is still a better overall package IMO, but the others are a significantly better value for most people, especially those who care only about the screen and not the other bells and whistles. Then again, Apple displays have always been priced at a premium and almost never get discounted (or at least never to the extent they should) as they age out of the market or when pressured by competition.

It's worth noting that a 5k + 120hz display would've been basically unusable until Thunderbolt 5 started shipping last year. To date, the only Apple devices with TB5 support are those with M4 Pro, M4 Max, or M3 Ultra SoCs. Those are all still relatively new*. Ergo, even with its 60hz refresh rate Apple Studio Display is still at the technological forefront of the 5k monitor space.

I'd be willing to bet that a new display with 5k + 120hz is on Apple's roadmap, but I doubt we'll see it anytime soon. When we do, it'll be just as expensive as the current Studio Display if not slightly more.

*EDIT: Per Apple's tech specs, some of these TB5 SoCs cap refresh rate at 60hz for 5k displays.

That's an outstanding deal! Especially if you're a photographer, fussy about color, and need to make prints that are accurate first time every time, with zero futzing around. For everyone else, find happiness with a Dell or LG.

Wish I needed another one...
lol, you're clearly joking...and if you aren't, let's act like you are.

And when LG starts manufacturing the displays panels for them they will sell their own cheaper monitor with the same panel

Legit looks awesome IMO.

Good to see the low/mid range step its game up with competition. 16e is not as competitive imo

And if you have an Amazon CC you get another 5% off that price! GREAT DEAL!

Its an Amazon sale. Apple sell its at full price. Best Buy has had it discounted to $1299 for months now.
Is the Amazon store not run by Apple - or does Amazon have the distribution rights to discount so deep? I just recall years ago how Apple products we rarely ever on sale anywhere - even through distributors.

Only for the non-VESA variant this time or else this would almost be compelling. Like @OliverL I’m also waiting for that 6K Asus monitor, because if I’m going to buy another overpriced Apple monitor (and they are overpriced; it’s a price I’ve paid but I won’t lie and pretend it isn’t overpriced for what it offers, especially now that we see other 5K monitors from people other than Samsung), I’m waiting for the refresh. But in the interim, the 6K from Asus sounds good.

I still think $1250 is high for a monitor that you can’t adjust the height or rotation of is insane (this is why I always get a VESA because I need to have my adjustments and the option to rotate and I prefer the look of floating monitors over stands), but I can’t deny that if my Studio Display broke tomorrow and I didn’t have AC+, I’d order a replacement immediately.

When it launched the MSRP seemed fine to me. However at this point in 2025 it really seems the MSRP should have a permanent price drop to $999 and we should already be seeing sale prices for $749. The build quality and metal design solid frame are hard to come by in this space as is 5K. This monitor still has a place in the market, and even the lower high end of pricing, but $1599 is not even close and over $1000 for a sale price doesn’t do enough enticing to legitimize the marketing use of a sale.

Apple used to have rules with authorized distributors (which includes Amazon proper but not necessarily all the people that sell through Amazon) about how much of a discount they could have — I think it was like 5% or something, but I could be wrong. There were sometimes exceptions for places like Costco, but in general you didn’t see big discounts on Apple stuff. Nintendo is one of the only other companies that typically enforces those same types of restrictions (tho retailers can get around that by offering bundles).

But for Apple, that changed about a decade ago. I don’t know if retailers just said “screw it, we’re going to discount and damn the consequences” or if Apple loosened the rules or what. But now you see Best Buy and Costco and Amazon and other places frequently do big discounts, even as soon as a product launches. And that’s to say nothing of things like the Walmart M1 MBA deals, which was very different from how Apple has done retailing partnerships in the Apple Store era.

Now, those places are all presumably breaking even or even a small loss on some of those sales in some circumstances, because Apple doesn’t offer (or at least historically didn’t) a lot of margin for third-parties, so in some cases Best Buy is losing money on those MacBook Air sales, hoping to make them up with either their warranties or accessories or through other promotions.

Apple doesn't want to play in this market, plus there are many other options for this.

Not joking at all. If you're not a photographer who's fussy about color accuracy and making excellent prints first time, every time, there are far better and less expensive choices. Dell, LG, Samsung, etc. Simply choose one and find happiness.

I suspect you don't fall into the above group.

There's no such thing as a 5k 120hz display out there, and it would be more than the Studio Display if there were.

I have no need for 120Hz refresh. I do have a need for color accuracy (that hasn't drifted at all over the two years I've owned mine) every time I print photographs.

Also the reason we didn't get a 17" Retina MacBook Pro - the panel alone would have been 2x the cost of the top end 15" in 2012.

This is not a new price. Been at this level before. Agree with those stating it's overpriced.
