Yep, and Apple would have had to make do with only a 25% margin instead of a 40% margin. Also the reason we didn't get a 17" Retina MacBook Pro - the panel alone would have been 2x the cost of the top end 15" in 2012.
4k at 27" still holds up for sure. I would love to get a wider monitor with the same DPI but it seems like MacOS only scales well with certain screen ratios, so 27" 5k is the optimal upgrade.I just paid $169 for a new 4K 60Hz Samsung 27" monitor to pair with my new Mac mini M4 -- picture quality is outstanding. I guess it is black plastic and not aluminum, though.
This is so very true. The comparisons they make with cheaper displays aren't valid. Do they really understand what a "retina" display does? I don't think so.Every time the Studio Display comes up in this website the average Macrumor poster reveals to know nothing about display tech. Don't bother with them.
Do you have a list of same-spec displays that are much less expensive? Seriously, I'm looking.Considering the specs, it is still horrendously overpriced, even after the discount.
Sorry, but you will have to wait for Thunderbolt-5 or USB4 to get 120Hz at 5K. Why would Apple make a TB5 monitor if there are no computers with TB5 video output?60hz for 1250$ my ass
Look here - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/diy-5k-monitor-success.2253100Speaking of which, does anyone here have experience using newer iMacs as second screens for M1 MacBooks? I have beefy personal and work laptops already.
It doesn’t, but you can brag to your friends who think a bigger number means better. How does 120hz help with photo work?
Do they have the tilt and height adjustable version on sale? I noticed Amazon just has the tilt adjustable one.Its an Amazon sale. Apple sell its at full price. Best Buy has had it discounted to $1299 for months now.
Why not? They’re leaving money on the table. I know Apple displays are more expensive but they look nice.
It doesn’t, but you can brag to your friends who think a bigger number means better.
My monitor have bigger number, my monitor betterer 😂
I’ve been searching for a display that is comparable to the current iMac and coming up empty. If you know of such a device can you tell me where to look? Thanks!Apple doesn't want to play in this market, plus there are many other options for this.
It is not, if you compare it to the BENQ 5k monitor which goes at 1199USD (the closest competitor in terms of built and panel quality which is lacking however webcam and speakers).Considering the specs, it is still horrendously overpriced, even after the discount.
I miss those days. Lately it feels like you’re getting ripped off if you don’t wait for a price drop. I’m working on a CS degree so got the education discount on one of these and still feel like I overpaid a bit :/Apple used to prevent their resellers from discounting their products. That seems to have all changed in recent years.
Imagine spending that kind of money for a 60Hz monitor in 2025. xdd
I don’t think the demand for a 24” Display would be very small. They sell a lot of Mac Mini’s. Most of those people are not going to pay for the current 27” Display as it’s more expensive than the computer. Those people will buy a different brand. Apple should offer a complete solution not half the solution. That’s not great customer service.Apple isn't interested in being in the display business. They had no problem leaving it entirely for multiple years. Ultimately the interest for a 24" display would be very small and Apple would just rather upsell those niche amount of customers to the 27".
Doesn't really sound all that different to "back of monitor made of pretty aluminum! better!"It doesn’t, but you can brag to your friends who think a bigger number means better.
My monitor have bigger number, my monitor betterer 😂
Hearing this ridiculous question always makes me snicker.Do they have the tilt and height adjustable version on sale? I noticed Amazon just has the tilt adjustable one.
That is a product of Apple's insistence on using TB as the only display connection on their monitors. DP2.1 would support 5k at 120Hz just fine. Most current-gen GPUs now support that standard. Apple limiting their displays to only supporting TB is the only reason why the throughput limitation exists in the first place.Sorry, but you will have to wait for Thunderbolt-5 or USB4 to get 120Hz at 5K. Why would Apple make a TB5 monitor if there are no computers with TB5 video output?
Actually there is one, Asus did release one eGPU with TB5 but it cost $2K
Which specs are you looking at ?Considering the specs, it is still horrendously overpriced, even after the discount.
That was my dilemma when thinking of how to replace my 21.5-inch Retina iMac. I really wanted to go with the Mac mini, but could not find a suitable monitor. The Studio Display is too large for my taste, so eventually gave up and went with another iMac.I don’t think the demand for a 24” Display would be very small. They sell a lot of Mac Mini’s. Most of those people are not going to pay for the current 27” Display as it’s more expensive than the computer.
