Correct me if I'm wrong, but the current ASD does not have the feature to show your desktop like the new iMac has, does it?

At least there should be an update in the webcam to allow this feature but on the other hand it would have made sense to release it togehter with the new mini and not wait for the MacBooks.

What'd you mean by Retina? More than 220 ppi like 270 in MBPs? I don't think this is gonna happen. 220 ppi is a gold standard, that's already Retina.
Sorry, meant Retina and Promotion. I don’t think the Studio Display tier will get ProMotion for the time being.

Current ASD does not support Desk View. Is possible this is a software feature enabled via firmware update.

120Hz miniLED refresh when the studio launches next Spring.... or too early?
We must not forget the following: Either Apple has made a deal behind the scenes with a panel manufacturer to produce new display panels that also support 220PPI at 120Hz, or we still have to wait for such news from the big panel companies. Then the pieces of the mosaic will fall into place. BOE, AUO, LG Display or Samsung Display, for example, would come into question.

i've noticed that retailers in europe have been lowering the prices for the ASD in the last couple of months. is it the same in US?

looking to get an ASD but my current thunderbolt dock doesnt support 5k/60fps. If i just go straight mac to ASD, i can live with a USB hub attached to the display. Anyone using anything that sits nicely on the desk with front access to SD card / usb ports? ideally with cord on back of the hub going to the display.

Since Apple Macs are a small portion of the PC market, I imagine the issues with Mac scaling aren't a major driver of monitor production, and since Windows supports sub pixel anti-aliasing and scales non-optimal size/resolution combo.s substantially better (and thus Windows users don't seem to worry about hitting 'sweet spots' like 5K/27"), I'm following up your post with a question...

How strong is the demand for 5K monitors in general, and 5K at 120-Hz in particular, in the Windows PC community?

From reviews and discussions online, they seem pretty happy with 4K.

Also, it's my understanding the bandwidth demands of 5K at 120-Hz will be high, such that many computers don't have the built-in connectivity to drive such a monitor.

Is there a strong enough demand to justify a major display maker bringing us a 5K 120-Hz display at this time?

If Apple does it, I imagine it'll be very expensive like the ASD. The ASD makes sense if you value high build quality (in a device that sits on your desk, is seldom touched and viewed mainly from the front), excellent in monitor speakers (which can be matched or beaten by non-monitor speakers, and many people have speakers), a web cam (various seen as pretty good to lack luster) with Center Stage (not everyone cares), and you can adjust brightness, etc..., from your keyboard (nice but it is a deal breaker?). And if you don't want to hook it to other devices besides Macs.

Probably not much different than the 5K 60Hz market was when LG/Apple brought theirs out.
That's not good news. I'd hoped the introduction of 5K would catch on at the 27" display size level, but adoption has been low. The recent entry of an $800 Asus 27" display is drawing attention, and for a 5K 27" the $800 is seen as compellingly affordable! At 60-Hz.

From online posts I get the impression a number of people are pretty happy with text sharpness on 4K 32" displays, which suggests the demand for 5K 27" outside the Mac world (and some graphics-related professionals) is low.

I stumbled across a video at Dave's Garage on a Dell 5K 120-Hz 40" display. (Warning: he's talkative and gets into his background dealing with displays; I think around 11:38 he shifts to talking about the monitor in question.). So there is a 120-Hz 5K display in real world use.

I imagine the potential for 6K 32" displays to draw closer to the mainstream is higher than for a surge of 5K 27" offerings, but even then it seems unlikely. And the Apple Pro XDR's price isn't compelling...

Wrapping it all back to the ASD, it'll be interesting to see when and if Apple produces a next generation version with 120-Hz refresh rate. But high refresh rates are often a driver for gamers, and the Mac is not a predominant gaming platform and Apple didn't provide connectivity options to make hooking consoles, etc..., to the ASD easy.

If Apple introduced a new ASD with 120-Hz refresh rate today, how many people would buy one?

120Hz isn't just for gaming. It would just be bringing it up to par with all of the other high end apple products.

The only real downside I can see to going miniLED on the ASD refresh would be increased pixel response time, leading to more ghosting. The 120Hz MPBs have nearly three times as slow pixel response as the ASD. I think it takes extra time to sync up the dimming zones with the panel

I wonder if Apple has had a challenging time implementing miniLED well on a 27" panel... or maybe they just wanted to milk the decade old 5K 60Hz as long as possible.

Who has any idea about the timeline for tandem OLED monitors. MBP upgrade rumored for 2026.

Does anyone notice audio glitches when connecting an audio device to their Apple Studio Display?

I have an RME Babyface Pro (audio device) connected to a Dell D6000. If I connect the D6000 directly to the M1 Max MacBook Pro 16, the Babyface Pro works perfect. However, if I connect the D6000 to the Apple Studio Display, which then connects to the laptop, the audio occasionally glitches, which is annoying.

yes. I use a Babyface Pro too and there are some occasional hiccups. The one that comes to mind is a reliable momentary audio drop every time I open Photos haha

when the ASD launched it was horrible with connected audio interfaces. The BFP would just randomly stop working entirely. Many months later this was eventually fixed in a firmware update for the ASD. In general, things are working great now

But I can still hear audio glitches now, you would think the ports in the ASD would be able to cope with a D6000 connected to a Babyface Pro.

I am using the original cable supplied with the BFP which is USB-A.

BFP -> Mokin USB C Adapter (UC0116B) -> ASD I still get audio glitches and sometimes USB device drawing too much power notifications.

BFP -> Mokin -> Macbook Pro works perfect.

If there is a refreshed Studio Display at 5K and 120Hz, would the thunderbolt 4 on a normal M4 Mac Mini be able to run it? Or would I need the M4 Pro with thunderbolt 5?

There are calculations that say that with Display Stream Compression (DSC) it could also work with Thunderbolt 4 and 120Hz at 5k (5120x2880), but I don't think you'll get that in practice. For this reason, I assume that such displays will only come with Thunderbolt 5 (DisplayPort 2.1).

I recently bought the ASD, price matched with Amazon at BestBuy. I did end up getting a calibration device as I didn't care for the overly warm tone. Now it matches the colors and tone on the ViewSonic 32" 4k.

I'm resisting the urge to buy another one.

So I took he plunge and bought an Apple Studio Display. It is gorgeous. I have a dual monitor setup and the difference when looking at my second monitor is night and day.

Edit: Just took a bit of time - firmware update is now appearing!
I'm running Sequoia 15.2 Beta and the ASD is on firmware 16.4. There is no software update to firmware 17 appearing...is there anyway to force an upgrade to firmware 17?

Even with firmware 17 the ASD will not be able to toast bread!
